Amar’e Stoudemire Told The Suns They Don’t Need Kobe

Amar'e Stoudemire

When you’re talking about building a team, even Amar’e Stoudemire believes in the importance of the point guard. After all, many believe it was two-time MVP Steve Nash that made Amar’e the player he is today. But when reminiscing with Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic yesterday, you might be surprised to hear that Stoudemire told the Suns’ brass after they traded away Stephon Marbury, Penny Hardaway and Tom Gugliotta during the 2003-04 season, he’d rather have Nash as his teammate than Kobe Bryant. The New Buzz: Hornets are going to the 2011 Playoffs

Chris Paul (photo. Zach Wolfe)

After being brutally beat down by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2009 NBA playoffs — during which they tied for the worst single-game loss in postseason history in a 121–63 drubbing in Game Four while shooting 31.5% from the field and 13.3% from the three-point line — the New Orleans Hornets went about a rebuilding process.

In the aftermath of a highly unsuccessful end to disastrous ’08-09 season that included a mid-season attempt to trade starting center Tyson Chandler for expiring contracts, the Hornets were widely perceived to be looking to trim the payroll. Read More »

The NBA’s Ultimate Franchise Point Guard: Deron Williams

Deron Williams (photo. Christian Kozowyck)

Having a good point guard is a must when it comes to winning a championship. With coaches sometimes getting lost in translation during the course of a game, a good team needs someone to direct the show on the floor during the most difficult of times. Here at the office, we have been in heavy debate over over the past two days who the best point guard is to build a franchise around – right now. Many argue that lead guards like Chris Paul, Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo are the best in the field for the position. However, Deron Williams is the ultimate franchise point guard. Read More »

Dime Live Blog: USA vs. Tunisia

Labor Day Weekend is one of my favorites in NYC for one reason: The West Indian Day Parade. Having been born and raised in Seattle, essentially a small town if you’re Black, simply being around 2-3 million people who look like me is something that has to be experienced to be believed. And everybody is wrapped in their national flags — Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, St. Croix, etc. — in one of the most colorful, upbeat parties you’ll ever see. Read More »

Forget Pistol Pete: Ricky Rubio is the next Jason Kidd

For all the hype surrounding Ricky Rubio over the last 4-5 years, I have to admit I’ve only seen him play a good 4-5 times. Between the last Olympics, some random FC Barcelona games on NBA TV, this summer’s exhibition against Team USA, and the World Championship, my exposure to the point guard position’s Next Big Thing has been limited. Even if I wanted to, declaring the 5th pick in the ’09 NBA Draft a bust or a future star right now wouldn’t feel right. So I won’t do that. Not yet. Read More »

Team USA beats Iran, beats themselves; Celtics add wild card

Lamar Odom

If Fran Fraschilla said it once, he said it a thousand times: Team USA wasn’t playing against Iran yesterday, they were playing against themselves. (Only without the Jay-Z after-party.) So if that was the case, would we call the 37-point “victory” over the guys in the other uniforms a win or a loss? … Hamed Haddadi and Co. weren’t as terrible as you may have been led to believe, but they still weren’t on Team USA’s level. And yet if you wanted the U.S. to improve during this game, you had to be disappointed. Read More »

How To Build The Best Team In The World

How To Build The Best Team In The World

If you’ve ever spoken to JaVale McGee, you know the guy is hilarious. And earlier this week on Twitter, McGee raised an interesting point that in the distant future, the World Championships won’t be USA vs. Brazil, but rather something akin to Earth vs. Mars. As McGee put it, “imagine how hard tryouts for earth r gonna b… Wow.” With that in mind, it got us thinking who would make Team Earth. But with the majority of the world’s best players coming from North America, we figured we’d put some limits on it. For this roster, only one player from every continent could be used. Here’s how it’d look: Read More »

Florida will challenge Duke for national supremacy in 2011

It’s been three years since Florida Gators basketball had their slice of victory pie. After the “Gator Five” — Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Corey Brewer, Taurean Green and Lee Humphrey — took off for the pros, head coach Billy Donovan has been working day and night trying to get his program back to title contention. Kevin Durant will be the NBA’s all-time leading scorer

Kevin Durant

The year 2010 has been a big one for Kevin Durant. He took his Oklahoma City Thunder from the Lottery to the playoffs, signed an $85 million contract extension, and is now the current “Captain America” of Team USA.

No one is the game is more humble, and there are very few players who work harder than KD. With all of his talents and skills, his current Team USA running mate, Andre Iguodala, made a bold statement about Durant’s future. In an interview with CSN Philly, Iguodala said, “Kevin Durant will be the NBA’s all-time leading scorer when it’s all said and done.” Read More »

Dime Live Blog: USA vs. Iran

I’ve never dealt directly with a bookie, and I don’t know much about gambling, so I have to ask: Is there such a scenario where you’d lose money on “winning” bet? For today’s Team USA vs. Iran matchup, putting $100 on the U.S. to win should cost you at least and extra $50 just out of pure shame in trying to get over so easily.

While Iran did pick up a win yesterday to run their record to 1-2 in Group B, it’s safe to say they’ll be fortunate here to keep the margin under 30. I’m usually one to pull for the underdog, and while there’s a part of me that wants Iran to do well, let’s be realistic: Hamed Haddadi is by far the best player on the team, and he might be the worst player in the NBA.
