We Reminisce: Future Hall of Famer Gary Payton doin’ work
In typical New York City fashion, I recently moved into an apartment where I don’t know any of my roommates. Upon learning I worked for a basketball magazine, one of my new roommates asked who my favorite players were. My answer has become automatic: Gary Payton and Reggie Miller. He asked why, and I thought of this clip…

One thing that annoyed me was that George Karl waited to put Payton on Jordan will the last game of their series… game 6, i think. I’m not saying the Sonics could have won but it was the matchup the whole basketball world was waiting for. Arguably the best defensive pg to ever play guarding the GOAT. George Karl ruined it.

Love it. PG mixtapes should be about defense and nice passes, and this one is chock full of both.
I HATED the Glove when he played. Always shut down your best perimeter player and then let everyone know about it. Much respect.
PS 90s mixtapes are the best – the Pharcyde compared to the stuff they’ll put on 2000s mixtapes is…I dunno. Guess we’ll see but it just seems to fit better! Sorry to Austin and anyone else that listens to Waka Flocka Flame!

I always thought Payton was the only player in the league that wanted to win as much as MJ. Unfortunately, Jordan was more talented.

@ Austin
I still dont understand. what is your fascination with the Pacers and Reggie Miller?
why arent you a Thunder fan? I mean, its the same team (roster) wise that last played as the Seattle SuperSonics?
I still dont understand the switch to Indy. it comes across as your were just too puss/punk to be a fan of another team for fear of being called a ‘bandwagon’ fan.
you have some ‘splain-ing’ to do….

Yeah, why don’t we former Seattle fans root for the city that stole our team? It makes so much sense.
Awesome video though. GP was definitely the man, that dunk after he stole the ball from Jordan was probably like one of 10 dunks in his career, even though he was 6’4. But he was so good at getting to the rim and finishing – got a lot of his points in the paint. Also he may have been the best post up player on those great Sonics teams. I’ll always remember what I consider his go to move: post up about 15-20 ft away from the basket on the left side, take a couple dribbles with his left hand and then just spin baseline to the basket and get to the rim before help could get there. Does it at about 3:40 in this vid.

Will says:
it’s kind of hard to root for a team like the thunder if you’re a sonics fan because you know they were stolen from you. no matter how similar the rosters may be, the thunder are not the sonics. and im sure almost everyone who used to root for the sonics would agree.

@ all former Sonic fans–
which team(s) do you all root for now? which is your new fav team and why? help me understand….

Austin Burton says:
@Heckler — Not married. I’m not a Thunder fan because I can’t support the ownership for taking the Sonics out of Seattle. That’s like being cool with a guy who swindled your grandma out of her savings. I don’t hate the OKC players or anything, but I won’t root for their organization.
Growing up, Reggie was one of my favorite players, so when I wanted to find a new team to back coming off the Sonics’ move, Indy was on my radar. If anything, the puss/punk move would be to go with the Lakers, Celtics, etc.

GP was the man. Magic’s my guy, but I own 3 GP jerseys.
Put that dude man up on ANY POINT GUARD in history and he would get his and lock them down while lettin them know about it…

Man Seattle deserves the Sonics. Loved GP and everything he brought to the table nd i used to go crazy watchin him take it Jordan. As a matter of fact I can understand why your two fav players were him and reggie miller those dudes didn’t give a fuck who Jordan was they were gonna tlk shit, push, pull, scrap nd do whatever they could to take Jordan down. Unfortunately they could not.
Anyways, Seattle deserves the Sonics, they just arent the same city without em. Not to mention they were robbed of the memories KD would have created for them. Doesn’t LA have a spare team nobody cares about? If Griffin pans out they’d have another superstar to cheer for to go along with there team.

High Release says:
Payton became a puss/punk as soon as he got to the Bucks. That one got George Karl fired from Milwaukee. Though a backcourt of he and Sam Cassell was a hilarious idea.

Kudabeen says:
Very wierd that this mix didn’t really have the great plays he had with Kemp. He had some ridiculous passes for lobs with Kemp.
Gary and Tim Hardaway were the first guards I saw with an on court swagger that made you love/hate them, but love them overall as an entertaining player with real game.
Other great guards like Stockton, Isiah, Iverson…didn’t really do too much talking and posing on the court, but a guy like Payton would bring it out of guys…
Loved the clip.

My All Time Team:
C: Hakeem Olajuwan
PF: Tim Duncan
SF: Larry Bird
SG: Michael Jordan
PG: Gary Payton
Took the best players that I think are position-wise.
In-Prime Dream dominates in-prime Shaq and Admiral, maybe not Russell but Russell never had an offensive game like the Dream.
The Big Fundamental is the greatest power forward of all time. Yeah I said it…all you idiot’s crying about Malone… TD won chips…and was the focal point in all except his first one.
The Legend….Greatest Shooter of All-Time (G.O.A.T)…possibly.
His Airness….Greatest of All-Time (G.O.A.T)…definitely.
The Glove…statistically one of the best overall PGs of all time. Only guy I would want besides him to run the team would be either Magic of Stockton…but neither of them had his defence.
