Last night, I spent some time on NBA.com looking up players, and somehow noticed that there are only five guys in the League whose last name begins with the letter “V.” What I also noticed is that those five players – position wise – would make a legit starting five. This got me thinking… Who would make the best starting five if we grouped players by the first letter of their last name? The results are kind of awesome. Unfortunately, the letters L, Q, U, X, Y and Z couldn’t field a team. And one last thing: Even though he’s not signed to an NBA team right now, I couldn’t let Royal Ivey start over Allen Iverson at point guard for “Team I.” Check them all out and vote for the best after the jump. Eddy Curry isn’t too far removed from his prime — in 2006-07 he posted that 19 and 7 line and was getting All-Star consideration — but now he’s going into a third straight season where he’s expected to see less time on the court than the Red Panda Acrobat. Between injuries and simply being too out of shape to use, Curry has appeared in 10 games since Mike D’Antoni took over as NY head coach in ’08, for a total of 73 minutes. Read More »
Considering everybody on the roster is, like, 17 years old and has next to no experience as the go-to guy on a pro team, it’s easy to be confused as to who is The Man for the Minnesota Timberwolves. But whether you thought it was Mike Beasley or Kevin Love or Jonny Flynn (or that they should just bring back Latrell Sprewell and call it a day), nobody was looking out for Martell Webster. Coming off the bench in yesterday’s exhibition blowout of the L.A. Lakers in London, Martell dropped 24 points (8-13 FG) and looked like he was just casually shooting J’s in the driveway. Ron Artest was assigned to shadow Webster eventually, but L.A.’s defense nonetheless gave up a lot of open looks … Read More »
The Mavericks did everything they could this summer to acquire a power forward that would allow them the opportunity to not play Dirk Nowitzki the same 37.5 minutes per game he played last year. But every avenue they pursued fell through. Now, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle is saying that he loves the idea of using Shawn Marion (who’s only 6-7) as a power forward, and the Matrix appears to love the idea. Read More »
In basketball, being a go-to guy isn’t always about who takes the last-second shot. It’s the guy who regularly gets the basketball when things are getting tense in the fourth quarter; the guy expected to calm things down when teammates are getting antsy; the guy called upon to snuff out an opponent’s rally or spark a rally of his own; the guy who’s not just supposed to make shots, but make the right decisions. Bottom line: Who do you want the offense to run through when everything is on the line?Read More »
One of the feel-good stories of the ’09-10 NBA season is headed for a potentially ugly ending.
Jamal Crawford, one of the NBA’s “good guys” and most exciting players, ended a career-long streak of never having been to the playoffs when he hooked up with the Atlanta Hawks and played an integral role in the team earning the No. 4 seed in the East and advancing to the conference semifinals. Along the way, Crawford averaged 18 points a night, hit a few game-winners, and was award the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year. Read More »
