Clash of the Titans (and Texans): 5 Memorable NBA Brawls

Considering the violent and aggressive nature of football — American football, that is — it’s a wonder you don’t see more incidents like the brawl between Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson and Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan that stole NFL headlines yesterday. The main reason? Helmets. If you noticed, Johnson and Finnegan didn’t really start throwing blows until they had each ripped off the other’s protective headgear.

NBA players don’t have to worry about breaking their hand on a plastic shell, which automatically makes for more fights in their sport. But for the most part, basketball players can’t fight. Here are the good, the bad and the ugly of some NBA brawls that stick out in my memory:

5. Kobe Bryant vs. Chris Childs (2000)
Sticking to his plan of adding something new to his skill set every offseason, Kobe hired Bernard Hopkins the summer after his run-in with Childs to improve his knuckle game.

*** *** ***

4. Shaquille O’Neal vs. Brad Miller/Charles Oakley (2002)
If Oakley was the one who committed the foul, why did Shaq almost give Miller the Hereafter moment? Probably because the other option was Oakley.

*** *** ***

3. Knicks vs. Nuggets (2006)
Who would have thought Nate Robinson’s Napoleon complex would show itself during a basketball game?

*** *** ***

2. Pacers vs. Detroit (2004)
Not “Pacers vs. Detroit” the basketball team. Detroit the city.

*** *** ***

1. Cedric Maxwell vs. Fan (1981)
I like how the Artest/Palace melee was covered like an assassination attempt on the President, yet NOBODY ever talks about this: In the ’81 Eastern Conference Finals, Maxwell went into the Philly crowd (of course it was Philly) and brought the NBA experience to some dude’s face. And Maxwell didn’t even get ejected from the game. See how much media coverage changes things?

Which NBA fights will you never forget?

Lakers and Kings-yes, I know preseason, but Fox’s uppercut followed by the fight in the tunnel was awsome.

and WHO COULD FORGET MOURNING VS LARRY JOHNSON
VAN GUNDY CLINGLING TO MOURNING’S FOOT LIKE GUM

ohh, Celtics vs Pistons in the late 80s-Larry Bird goes up for a lay-up, gets mauled by Rodman and Laimbeer.

He gets up to go after Laimbeer and the refs and teammates get in between. The BEST PART about this fight was when Larry was still being held at the baseline and Laimbeer at the free throw line, Larry spots the basketball at his foot, picks it up, and CHUCKS it RIGHT AT LAIMBEER’S HEAD! it hits him in the shoulder and they kick Larry out. All that was called was a shooting foul on Laimbeer. Game went on as normal. Classic.

Kobe vs Reggie Miller … what set Kobe off is the question that bugs me? Reggie talked all game but there was something Miller said at the end of the game that set Kobe off…what was it?

    Sheed as a peacemaker..hahaha

The good ole days, this is what made rivalries. The perceived image of the league is the real culprit for why the fights get overblown in the NBA. I remember jumping out my seat when Kobe got two-pieced. There are other memorable fights-

    Shaq vs Barkley
    Miller vs Jordan
Of course Kermit vs Rudy T

  • jack ryan

how about derek harper vs jo jo english, 94 ec finals, spilled right into david stern’s lap

Vernon Maxwell vs. Jeff Hornacek. Went up into the stands a couple times.

  • superfreak

the shaq haymaker is ridiculous, imagine if he landed that

    @dapro

Rudy T vs Kermit was not a brawl, it was damn near manslaughter

  • jrav

If Oakley was the one who committed the foul, why did Shaq almost give Miller the Hereafter moment? Probably because the other option was Oakley.

Reminded me of Bill Simmons book when he saw Oakley with Jordon at a bar; even after years of retirement, Oakley still has his boys back

  • Chaos

man, everyone is mentioning artest but what about crazy ass stephen jackson, he was straight instigating, he threw like four or five punches just cuz!….its just some players you have to stick crazy ass in front of their name and them two dudes is it…..also dennis rodman and xavier mcdaniel

  • Ian

yeah going after miller is the safer option btw whatever happened to fizer? the lakers were gonna lose that fight the bulls also had artest.

how can you have a carmelo pic on this article dudes a pussy.

wow artest how one man destroyed a basketball team(his own). artest shoulda been banned from the league (jackson also) and why didnt the fans just jump him instead of grabbing him. if that game had happened here (dominincan republic) artest gets shot before he hits the second row. ron and jackson were all over the fans but neither one wanted anything to do with wallace.

  • Joe’s Momma

Not a fight, but “Bruce Lee” Bowen’s flying kick to the face of Wally World was funny as heck.

Tmac vs Bobby Jackson was pretty entertaining.

Anthony Peeler elbowing KG was fun to watch too.

    Spree vs PJ Carlesimo’s neck

Ian, you are crazy that book was awesome. Try something with pictures and about 100 pages and you might like it.

  • Ian

    jrav
we all know hes a bit of a homer but that book took it to a diff level. i mean comon is not all bad but i knew it wasnt going to go well after he explained how much better russell was over wilt sayin that russell didnt have the best team all the time like many people think.

    big b
really? grow up please but hey enjoy this one cuz its prob the only time someone mentions a book that uve read or at least tried to. ignorant fool.

  • Ian

    jrav
and he took a personal shot on me sayin walton was better than the admiral lol

  • yoda

carmelo is a bitch!!! and he wants to be the man :(

  • neoy

whats the story behind Charles Oakley? Why is he labelled as one of the hardest NBA goons?

  • jrav

To be fair, he presented good arguments which I believe proved that Wilt’s teammates were not as crappy as many state nor were Russel’s celts as perfect as everyone thinks. It was easier to win back then and Russel was thankful to have Red but Russel was willing to do whatever it took to win which includes being coachable.

Simmons is a homer but he did put Magic ahead of Bird so you can’t state he’s completely blind.

Not sure about the walton over the admiral, both were able to help their respective squads in their later years but walton managed to lead the blazers to a championship as the main components while unfortunately the admiral ran into some of the toughest competition during his prime years (late 70s’ werent exactly a prime time for basketball though).
I can’t remember the author but it was in a book which ranked the 50 greatest players prior to the 2004 season, Shaq was 1st, and in it, the author wrote how the Admiral was more than a basketball player while others were only focused on victory and had almost a berserker competitiveness, the admiral was just competitive while enjoying life, he always gave it his all but he just wasn’t a killer.

  • Ian

    elliott kalb
i made shaq 1 just to sell the book. i like his book more and yes he did say that about the admiral but he ranked him 18th not 29th like simmons and elliott had walton in the 40s were he belongs not 28th like simmons. another thing is you cant really compare competition (u did mention that) and the teammates that the admiral and walton had. besides walton didnt last that long being great to be ranked that high.

  • Ian

oh and i never said wilts team sucked but he didnt have the better team all those times. loved how he also said russell played the rope a dope and let wilt score the first 3 qs and denied him in the 4th that is kinda dumb. if he did that all the time the celts would be playin from behind all the time.

  • Ian

i shouldnt had said the book sucks ill take it back ill go with i didnt like it at all is filled with a lot of stuff i think is a bit off. thats just me.

  • Mr Me

    neoy says:
“whats the story behind Charles Oakley? Why is he labelled as one of the hardest NBA goons?”

WHAT!? Dimemag needs to start doing History 101 classes.

Oakley slapping Sir Charles in a players only closed door lockout meeting?

Oakley slapping Tyrone Hill multiple times over not being paid an owed gambling debt.

Oakley slapping Jeff McInnis over a woman before a game.

    Oakley vs PJ Brown

    Oakley vs Xaiver McDaniel

Even at almost 50 years old Oakley still gets down
    http://backporch.fanhouse.com/2010/06/04/charles-oakley-supposedly-scuffled-with-security-at-vegas-resort/?ncid=edlinkusspor00000004

    Bill Simmons described him best:
    The John Shaft Award

This goes to Oakley. One of the networks needs to have a “Coolest guy on the planet” contest because Oakley would absolutely win. You know those “Road House” scenes in which Swayze just stands in the bar, surveying the scene with a thin smile on his face, barely moving a fingernail and meanwhile, 10 drunk guys are brawling a few feet away from him? That’s what Oakley is like. You could hire some extras to play gang members at one of these parties, then have them fire blanks at each other 10 feet from Oakley and I’m not even sure he would flinch. The great thing about him: He served as MJ’s enforcer in Chicago, and now they’re both retired … and from what I could tell, he’s still Jordan’s enforcer. Could there be a greater tribute in life to someone’s kickassability than Michael Jordan himself deciding, “You know what? I need to make sure he’s still on my side. I don’t care if we’re in our 40s.”

Anyway, on Thursday night, I asked one relatively famous current player who knows him, “What makes Oakley more intimidating than everyone else?”

His answer: “There’s a lotta tough guys in the league, but Oak don’t give a f—.”

  • Mt. Pleasant

Whether you agree with the rankings or not Bill Simmons’ book was funny.

  • i0ioooi0i

if shaq landed that punch, he would’ve had a broken hand. maybe the lakers don’t even win the chip that year.
