Duke recruit’s dunk contest upset over best H.S. dunker in country

With some of America’s top high school talent convening in Fort Myers, Fla., this week for the City of Palms Classic, naturally the tourney’s dunk contest was off the chain.

Deuce Bello (Westchester, N.C.), the 19th-best dunker in the world, was considered the favorite going in. But he faced stiff competition from Ike Nwamu (Westchester, N.C.), Shaquille Johnson (Milton, Ga.), Demetris Morant (Bishop Gorman, Nev.) Marcus Gilbert (Academy of the New Church, Pa.) and Marshall Plumlee (Christ School, N.C). In the end, 6-foot-11 Duke signee Plumlee took home the title.

Unless you do absolutely bananas dunks that show you really have hops, i.e. Dwight Howard…if you’re 7′ it’s not impressive if you can dunk. Dude shouldn’t of won.

Agreed…no way “plumblebee” shoulda won. Some nice dunks for the competition as a whole though.

Which play was better? I was watching NBA Action and the Mike Dunelevy play was number 1 over JR Smith play. What a joke. Who ever is in charge of this countown should be fired.

Some people go too far. these dunks were nice but not better than the NBA contest.

Plumlee got very creative with his dunks, but that Shaquille Johnson kid was bringing it. He jumped over dude without using his hands. And the other kid who looks like a lightskinned Ron Artest, Marcus Gilbert, had a nice touch the backboard to a 360 dunk. that was very sick. prolly the best dunk of the contest.

Marcus Gilbert’s dunk at 0:35 is the best! I’ve never seen that one before, looks awesome.

Is that the newest trend, the passes in the contest being better than the actual dunks????????

  • First & Foremost

Soccer Assists should account for nothing. It is a dunk contest, not a dropping a dime contest. However a win is a win and he dazzled the crowd.

Eh. I guess Plumlee is actually the best dunker in the country. Title of article is a little off.

I really liked the ups on that Nwamu kid. Only 6’2″ and really brung it. Reaching the ball back to his feet before the dunk and still bringing it through with such frce.. he woulda had my vote. It’s between him and Johnson, I don’t know how Johnson didn’t win.. perhaps he went first.
