Brandon Jennings has been ready for the dunk contest since birth
Of the four players that are reportedly in for the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend dunk contest, Brandon Jennings is already the underdog. And not because he’s about a foot shorter than the rest of the comp — Blake Griffin, Serge Ibaka and JaVale McGee — but because Jennings is currently sidelined with a broken foot, and because his NBA dunk resume is pretty bare. But anybody who has been following Jennings since he was a high school star knows he can sky. Check some of his early highlights:

Nola says:
this video further proved how bad of an underdog he is. he obviously has hops because he’s short and can still sky but that video was 99% normal 2 hand dunks. he’d be better off in the 3pt shooting contest..

Bo Knocks says:
I like Jennings as a player, but come on.
Griffin could still dunk if the hoop was 14 feet off the ground and McGee might rip the boards down.
No shot.

Rafa23 says:
I agree with Nola. Of course it’s a bit impressive for a 6 foot 1 guy(yeah right) to dunk like that, but there was 1 dunk that could get him more than a 40, which was the between the legs. The rest is just standard stuff. We are not talking about good dunkers here, which he is, we want freaks in the contest like Westbrook.
PS: Before anybody talks about other guys again, it’s not the NBA’s fault Westbrook, JR Smith and Iggy aren’t there. They all don’t want to.

G Man says:
He ain’t Derrick Rose, that’s for sure.

shiptar says:
agree with the others. Probably his best dunk will be between the legs dunk or a 360. I dont expect much from him…

kevink0326 says:
I already know what he is going to do:
1) a normal 2 hand dunk and then slap the back board
2) do a self alley off the backboard for an one handed slam
3) Do a 180 dunk
4) He will do a in between the leg.

Can Anyone Say DEE Brown?
January 5th, 2011 at 6:21 pm
DH says:
That was a pretty terrible highlight reel for making a case for the dunk contest. I’m pretty sure I fell asleep after watching so many standard one-handed and two-handed dunks (followed, of course, by a slap of the backboard).
He’d get murdered in the dunk contest.

Big Hook Nunez says:
His dunks reminds me of Shannon Brown last year, very ordinary!

THUNDER U says:
GET RID OF JENNINGS
and if they really want a guard in the contest bring in WESTBROOK!

AirKaris says:
agree with Lakers Nation – could be a Dee Brown like performer – or perhaps like Steve Francis when he was in it. Just please don’t let it be like Chris Jackson or Darrell Armstrong…

Bing says:
Big Hook Nunez took the words from my mouth.
He’s injured anyway, would be a bad idea for the Bucks club to risk re-injury in such an event.

neoy says:
@AB u must be really foolish to think this guy can do anything at the dunk contest… all of these dunks are simple in game dunks, get off jennings balls
January 5th, 2011 at 11:35 pm
bruce*leroy*green says:
jennings wont participate if he’s still hurt….and theyre talkin about Deandre Jordan being the replacement.
Thats 3 big men with hops who can stuff their elbow in the rim, thats not so bad.
Ibaka’s gonna be wack tho. He’s a good in game dunker and he’ll smash on ppl but he can’t do alot in the air besides a windmill.
THAT OOP GRIFFIN JUST CAUGHT ON THE NUGGETS WAS NAAAASTY. DIME…POST THAT ASAP!

Sorry but i gotta sell….and sell high. his dunks remind om of a young AI. get get up to do dunks we’ve seen before but he does not belong in the contest…especially not with a foot injury. lets get derozan back….

hadoken says:
personally im pissed off about this. dude has a broken foot. he needs to hurry up and get his ass back on the court so he can give my fantasy team some serious stats. he was already slacking before he got injured. i’m sorry young, i’m a fan and all, but super blake this year is going to slaughter the comp like vince did in 2000.

cov says:
these dunks are still weak. that two handed that is like 80% of the video gets no points. i like jennings, he should be in the skills comp. where’s demar or sonny weems? i know demar was in last year, he kinda got cheated then too.

it’s cool, I like him, but he’s watching leaguepass at home with a broken foot.
and where’s joshmcroberts? he wanted to be in. And where’s LeChicken?

Kudabeen says:
I think they should just lift the basket and have a big man sky contest. But it isn’t like the NBA is trying to entertain fans or anything. Don’t see Jennings doing much. Maybe the NBA is tossing him in to try to give back some of the juice he lost since last year as a rising star.
I’m WAY more interested in the Rookie/Sophomore game. Just to see who besides Griffin steps up in the moment to put on a show.
I always think of Andre Iguodala’s performance and wonder what he would be like in a Knicks, Suns, Orlando, Heat, or even Clippers style of offense. What swing players will own the moment…

LMNOP says:
If Jennings wants to not get blown away in this he has to get creative, which to me, is a good thing. adding someone who cant just rely on their hops and height adds something differnt to the contest. he wont win it but he might make it more interesting.

crimewave says:
i agree with what y’all are saying…jennings can dunk for a short dude, but nothing in that vid was incredibly impressive…
that being said, young money is a showman…and i don’t think it’ll hurt having somebody with some personality and flair in the comp…i can guarantee he’ll be the most creative
January 6th, 2011 at 11:15 am
crimewave says:
as for them others..
Griffin will dominate (he crushes everything)
McGee will try something ridiculous and end up missing (that’s a guarantee)
Ibaka will bore everyone to death
And it would have been nice to see Rose or Westbrook…but NOBODY wants to see DeRozan in a contest again…that awkward muthafucka is terrible

derik says:
even Rondo is a better dunker then Jennings, no Westbrook?? i’m surprised

Dear DIME Magazine,
I am writing to encourage you to please remove or relabel the title of this post to not attempt to lend credibility to gimpy Brandon Jennings participating in the dunk contest of giants. He isn’t the guy (Nate, Shannon, Will Bynum type) to be casted as David to the Goliaths…
Recommended title for re-post:
“Brandon Jennings can dunk but…”
Respectfully,
Kudabeen

Detroit Dave says:
The between the legs was very impressive, other than that I see better dunks at LA Fitness on a daily occurrence.
If you are over 5’10″ dunking should be apart of your monthly diet.

hakasan says:
westbrook and the rest of the ‘more accomplished’ lot are just scared that blake might come out of no where and finish their alley oop dunks for them….
(i was going to say block their dunks from no where, but then i realize blake doesn’t get that many blocks…)

Miami Maven says:
Blame Dime on this video. Of course a 6’1″ guard in high school wasn’t going to do anything crazy on his break away dunks. The question is; does he have any creativity for a dunk contest, since he didn’t show it in high school and the pros?
