When Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Nets back in May, I drank the Prokhorov Kool-Aid like no other. As a diehard Nets fan, I had just witnessed a 12-win season, the team trading away all of my favorite players, and worst of all, losing the Draft Lottery and seeing the Wizards end up with John Wall. My optimism about the team was at an all-time low, and the only thing I could grasp on to for any hope was Prokhorov with his deep pockets and bravado. Read More »
It should be considered a borderline miracle if the Portland Trail Blazers hang onto their 8th-seed playoff spot in the West, especially with Marcus Camby‘s knee surgery basically cutting their winning formula in half. Back when the roster was (mostly) healthy, Portland had a routine: Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge did the heavy lifting for three quarters, then Andre Miller and Camby would contribute clutch plays throughout the fourth/overtime, and B-Roy would handle the really heroic duties. Now it’s down to just LaMarcus and ‘Dre, but the Blazers are still winning … Read More »
Trying to recapture some of their early-season momentum after a disastrous stretch marked by injuries to Dirk Nowitzki, Caron Butler and Tyson Chandler, it’s no surprise the Mavericks would act fast once an active three-time NBA All-Star became available.
Not even two hours after the Toronto Raptors announced they had released Peja Stojakovic following an undisclosed contract buyout, the Mavs have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Peja to bring him to Dallas as soon as he clears waivers. Read More »
Between the two of them, LeBron James and Brett Favre probably made up about 45% of ESPN’s programming over the last eight months. We’re not sure how old this video is, but it had us cracking up in the office today. “Wanna see my Danny Woodhead?” WARNING: Probably not safe for work. (Unless you work here.)
Having witnessed the hard work and ingenuity of NBA All-Star campaign videos for Rudy Gay and, well, the entire Knicks starting rotation this year, I am impressed at the lengths players and teams will go just to get their names out there. As an NBA fan, I truly applaud their efforts. Seeing players become starters relying solely on their “old hero” images – A.I. comes to mind – or nationality just doesn’t sit well with me. It isn’t fair to those players who are worthy, but get overlooked because of the market they play in or the name on the back of their jersey. With that said, here is an ode to the more memorable NBA All-Star campaigns videos that have helped players either make the squad, or at least show off their not-so-serious side. Read More »

Aging shooters have been something of a trending topic on NBA airwaves this week. On MLK Day, Knicks announcer Mike Breen said Steve Nash should be in the discussion as maybe the greatest shooter in League history. During Hawks/Heat on Tuesday, one Miami announcer called Mike Bibby “one of the all-timers” in terms of pure shooting. And last night, Ray Allen got his usual heaping amount of praise after he buried another game-winning bucket to lift the Celtics over the Pistons.
Now another of the League’s veteran snipers may be on the free agent market soon for a mid-season pickup, and some top playoff contenders are listed as potential destinations. Read More »
Believe it or not, we’re already at the midpoint of the 2010-11 NBA regular season. That means it’s time to get out our rearview mirrors and crystal balls to look back on the fantasy fallout from the first half of the season and set expectations for the rest of the way.
Just like last year, we’ll use a crude grading system: The first letter grade after each player’s name will be based on their performance thus far, in addition to how they’ve fallen short of, met or exceeded expectations; and the second grade will be based on their projected value for the second half of the season.
