Spurs hit NBA milestone in beating Houston; Dirk regains MVP form

Tony Parker

Sometimes the Spurs make it look so easy. On their way to becoming the first team in the NBA to reach 40 W’s this season, San Antonio’s defense suffocated Houston in the second half, and Manu Ginobili (22 pts) led the offense in a 13-point win … The efficiency was ruthless. In the first quarter, Tony Parker (17 points) threw a lob to Tim Duncan, which was the quietest, most difficult alley-oop we’ve ever seen: Duncan going backdoor, getting a pass that stopped right next to the rim as TD casually laid it in. LeBron plays with House money to beat Detroit; Durant drops 40

LeBron James

The Big Three was down to the Chosen One for last night’s Heat/Pistons game, which naturally meant for LeBron James that the role of fourth-quarter hero would fall into the hands of — Eddie House? … With five minutes left in the fourth, the Pistons were up three before House tied it with a corner trey. A few possessions later, House hit an off-balance jumper from the wing. Then after Austin Daye’s triple with one minute left put Detroit up by one, House ended up with the ball in his hands with the final seconds ticking down. Read More »

Battle of Los Angeles: Two high school powerhouses collide

Westchester vs. Fairfax

In a city where the Lakers, UCLA, and now Blake Griffin consistently hog the headlines, high school basketball in Los Angeles has been relatively overlooked compared to cities like New York, Chicago, or even more recent hotbeds Seattle and Houston.

But considering that high schools in L.A. proper have produced nearly 60 NBA players — not to mention schools in the metro area like North Hollywood and Compton producing dozens of pros — Southern Cali is deserving of a little more shine. Read More »

Dime Q&A: James Jones on LeBron, Bosh, and being Miami’s hired gun

(photo. Keith Allison)

Every now and then, James Jones becomes the third member of the Big Three. Last night was one of those occasions.

While the Miami Heat took on the Knicks without injured All-Star Chris Bosh (ankle), Jones stepped into the role as safety outlet for Dwyane Wade (34 pts) and LeBron James (24 pts). Jones scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range — one of only five Miami players to register on the scoreboard in the loss and the only one besides James and Wade to hit double figures. Dwyane Wade or LeBron James: Who will lead Miami to a title?

It seems Dwyane Wade and LeBron James can’t help but complicate even the most simple questions regarding the dynamics of the Miami Heat. Whose team is this? Who is the go-to guy? Who is the playmaker and who is the scorer? Who should get the MVP votes and who should get the Best Supporting Actor nod? It’s never an easy answer. Read More »

Buy Low, Sell High: Fantasy Week 14

Dirk Nowitzki

Buy Low: Dirk Nowitzki is struggling with his shot lately, shooting just 38 percent from the floor in January (as of Thursday night), a far cry from the 55 percent he was shooting from the field in his 12 games in December. Diggler’s too good to keep this up (or is it down?), so count on him to bounce back very shortly. Get him on the cheap before that happens. Read More »

The Best Player In The Big East Not Named Kemba Walker

If there were anyone who would deserve a Most Improved Player of the Year award in the NCAA, it would be Providence College guard Marshon Brooks. After the Friars got off to a good start against the local competition, they struggled mightily once Big East play started, losing six straight games. But in their last two contests, however, they have pulled off upsets against two Top 25 teams (Louisville and Villanova), and Brooks has been their MVP with 27-point and 20-point outings, respectively.
