Rumeal Robinson sentenced to more than 6 years in prison

Rumeal Robinson (Sports Illustrated)

Xavier McDaniel made me dream of dunking. Dale Ellis made 25-footers seem possible. And along with Ricky Pierce — who set an NBA record for most consecutive makes at the line as a member of the Sonics — Rumeal Robinson made me want to practice free throws.

Robinson became famous in 1989, when he hit the game-winning free throws in the final seconds of Michigan’s national championship victory over Seton Hall. That game was my first real memory of college basketball, and Robinson was the hero. He went on to play a few years in the NBA, but he’ll always be known for that one shining moment as a Wolverine. Watch JaVale McGee Practicing For The Dunk Contest

JaVale McGee has definitely had his share of in-game highlight dunks (and in-game dunk fails) but nothing in this video of him practicing for the Dunk Contest impressed me. The mouth-grabbing-paper dunk was so-so, but him being 7-0 just reminded me of a giraffe eating from a tree. Can we just hand the trophy to Blake Griffin or sleeper Brandon Jennings already?

NBA Trade Pitch: Danny Granger to the Spurs for Richard Jefferson

Danny Granger

As much as I hate sports/dating analogies — I really can’t hear one more comparison between LeBron James leaving Cleveland and somebody breaking off a relationship — when it comes to trades, the process does resemble most club hook-ups: One side wants it, while the other has to be convinced they want it.

In this case, the San Antonio Spurs want it. While the team is sitting atop the NBA with a 29-6 record and are as strong a contender as anybody for the 2011 championship, naturally they have to look toward the future. Read More »

We Reminisce: Pistol Pete vs. The Iceman in H.O.R.S.E.

OK, so I don’t actually remember this — I wasn’t even born yet — but it’s still pretty cool: Two of the most talented shot-makers of all-time taking their talents to the H.O.R.S.E. arena. Not to mention the uniforms, the hair, and just Iceman’s swagger is unmatchable.

Pass The Mic: Blake Griffin Has The Clippers Thinking Playoffs

Blake Griffin

By now you’re familiar with our “Pass the Mic” series – a feature where he give the pen and pad to some of our best readers to let them drop knowledge on the NBA. We’ve had previous posts on everything from game-saving rule changes to essays on how money is ruining the world’s greatest game to imagining what life would be like without Mike. Today, we’re turning the space over to Scottie Braden, who thinks the Clippers may be able to pull off the impossible this season. Read More »

LeBron James is Suffering From a Broken Heart

LeBron James

LeBron James says he’s “heartbroken,” but it has nothing to do with being Public Enemy No. 1 in every NBA arena not located in Miami. Instead, James is moved because one of his best friends on the Heat, rookie Dexter Pittman was sent to the D-League this morning. FoxSportsFlorida.com’s Chris Perkins spoke to both Pittman and James and got some (melodramatic) quotes from the pair: Read More »

Buy Low, Sell High: Fantasy Week 11

Danny Granger

Buy Low: Danny Granger has struggled with his shot in recent weeks and is now shooting a career-low 41.6 percent from the field so far this season. Nevertheless, he’s hitting 2+ threes and racking up 1.3 steals and a block per game. Also, in his most recent game, Granger managed to grab a career-high 17 rebounds against the Knicks on Sunday. Yes, this was the same Knicks team that gave up 31 rebounds to Kevin Love, but part of the reason for Granger’s out-of-the-blue rebounding figure was that he started at power forward. While he might not start there every game, coach Jim O’Brien hinted at more small ball going forward, which would feature Granger at the PF spot more often. This could mean the historically rebound-deficient Granger could see more caroms bounce his way, which would only bolster his fantasy appeal. Read More »

NBA Trade Rumor: Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey (again), with Cleveland involved

Carmelo Anthony, Dime #53

During his seven-plus seasons in Denver, Carmelo Anthony has shared the court two of the most accomplished guards in recent NBA history — first Allen Iverson, then Chauncey Billups. He has played alongside explosive scorers like J.R. Smith and Al Harrington, and been supported by rugged interior players like Nene and Kenyon Martin and Marcus Camby. For the most part, ‘Melo has usually had at least a solid, if not stellar, supporting cast.

And yet if the latest trade rumor involving the three-time NBA All-Star has any validity to it, ‘Melo may find himself in a position to carry a mediocre roster beyond its potential. Read More »
