We Reminisce: Muggsy Doin’ Work

Believe it or not, but Muggsy Bogues turned 46 years old yesterday. And while there have been NBA players standing under six-feet since he last laced them up in the 2000-01 season, I doubt there will ever be anyone 5-3 to ever do work like Muggsy did.

What do you think?

    you can’t teach height……

Bogues is a once in a life time talent…height wise.

I concur, but for somewhat different reasons. I think NBA personnel now simply draft bigger and stronger guys, regardless of their skill level. Someone of Muggsy’s stature would be less likely get a chance to play in today’s NBA, even if he could ball.

It is okay to be short when you have Grandmama and Big Zo backing you up. Exciting team.

That last hook shot from 2 ft inside the 3pt line was such poor shot selection.

him and boykins just a joy to watch

Mugsy was the truth and he was a for real baller,

I feel like anyone drafted or playing in the NBA like that would be a gimmick! Here for a year, then gone.

Did they not include or his famous block on Ewing, or did I miss it?

i absolutely loved Bogues, such a joy to watch cuz he had this passion not to let his height impede him in what he wants to do. Thats a tribute to his basketball IQ as well as his physical strength not to let bigger people push him over. His run with the Raptors was amazing, flat out amazing. It still boggles the mind how the hell can these bigger dudes not block this short shit everytime he had the ball? cuz IQ beats just having talent.

    rapTOr says:

The Shotclock was running down and he was being guarded by a man 14 inches taller. Do you expect him to shoot over the top? I’m sure mugsy has practiced a lot of abstract shots to help overcome his height to the point where he became quite good at them in such situations…

bogues is sick, legit handles, but it’s hilarious dude looks like a 13 year old out there with those dudes

@Shot in Ya Face: YOU do?? Muggsy is the shortest player ever to play. There has never been anyone before him that small so there’s no indication that there will be another 5’3″ player, nevermind one who will play 14 extremely productive years. And like other people have said, the players are only getting taller and stronger with the evolution of the game.

To me, it sounds like you think we may see another Muggsy. Give points to back your view, other than “anything is possible”, and maybe I’ll agree with you.

He was a lot of fun to watch. Magic said he was the most annoying guy to guard him.

Mugsy was and absoulte Man! He took something that was supposed to be a knock on him (his height) and used to become his best weapon (and menance on Defense). The guy was so strong that if you posted him up you had to do it from 15ft away because his low center of gravity wouldn’t allow you to get too close to the basket and if you put it on the floor there was a good chance he was going the other way with the rock. I used to love to see him and Penny go at it. Penny had all the advantages but muggsy went toe to toe with him and picked him up full court.

When Muggsy was in high school (playing for probably the greatest local non recruited high school team ever) in B-more he was laughed at and made fun of before every away game. But then he would pick up their guards full court and terrorize them the entire game to make them pay for what the crowd was saying. It helped that he had 4 other NBA players (including the late Reggie Lewis who was a bench player!!!! David Wingate and Reggie Williams), but he was considered the best on the team.
