Carmelo drops 50 in a loss; Cavs lose NBA record 25th straight
Memphis isn’t exactly San Antonio or Boston. But a road win over a potential playoff team will do for now, as the L.A. Lakers try to regain their championship form. Considering the Grizzlies embarrassed the Lake Show at Staples Center the last time they met, and that Ron Artest and Lamar Odom had good games at the same time last night, and that Andrew Bynum walked out of the FedEx Forum (his personal Waterloo) standing on two feet, this amounts to a big win for L.A. … Kobe Bryant (19 points) was locked in, perhaps not in efficiency (6-17 FG), but definitely in competitive spirit. And then in the second half when he matched up with Rudy Gay (18 points), he became even more engaged. For a while, the two went at it. Kobe picked Gay’s pocket on a post-up. Then Gay came back and forced Bryant into a turnover. Gay would make a crazy fallaway jumper before Kobe got himself to the line. For most of the fourth quarter, Gay was doing just enough to keep Memphis within range. The Lakers were clinging to a two-point lead until Gay had to leave with an injury, and back-to-back threes from Odom (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Artest (13 points, 4 steals) helped seal the deal … Despite the loss, Memphis has positioned itself to make a run at the playoffs. And if Sam Young (22 points) continues to play like he has for the past few weeks in giving them another scorer, it’s only going to help ease the load on Zach Randolph and Gay … If Randolph (8 points, 2-14 FG) was looking to prove he was unfairly snubbed in the All-Star voting, he picked a bad time to turn invisible against Pau Gasol, one of the guys chosen ahead of him … Does anyone else want to reconsider whether LaMarcus Aldridge should be an All-Star? Last night in Portland’s win over Chicago, LMA scored 11 straight down the stretch, diversifying his game with jumpers and post moves. He was huge all night (42 points) and got the better of the leading MVP candidate Derrick Rose (36 points) in one of the best duels of the season … After LaMarcus set his new career high, Andre Miller (27 points, 11 assists) was encouraging the crowd to show LMA some love, and all of the Blazers were genuinely excited to see him reach that accomplishment. Aldridge looked legitimately moved … Other headlines around the League: Gerald Wallace had 19 points and 16 rebounds as Charlotte upset Boston; Kevin Love posted 27 points and 17 rebounds for Minnesota while handing New Orleans their third straight loss; Deron Williams put up 21 points and 9 assists as Utah beat Sacramento; and Steve Nash dropped 14 points and 15 assists on Golden State in a Phoenix win … In that Bobcats/Celtics game, Kwame Brown and Kendrick Perkins got into a chest-to-chest confrontation following a hard foul by Perk on Kwame. Not trying to start something, but when Kwame gets pissed, he looks a lot like that bald-headed brotha sitting next to the Charlotte bench … We’re out like W’s in Cleveland …

First & Foremost says:
@WTF Melo drops an efficient 50 with no assists on 24 shots. He made 66% of his shots. True he had a boatload of free throws which helped.
Kobe might “go off” for 50 with 35 shots. As good as a scorer he is, when you give him that many shots HE BETTER score 50 or more.

the second and third options were not available to the nuggets last night, Melo would have to score 50 in order to have a chance to win. Melo did it efficiently on 24 shots and when kobe goes for 50 he is usually does it on 35 to 40 shots. not to mention carmelo was constantly getting to the line. thats efficiency.
LMA was my pick for the All-star game and i hope he uses that snub (yup, snub. he should have gotten in but stern is trying to make kevin the next white nba superstar, which he will be). LMa has been the man and rightfully so

February 8th, 2011 at 10:56 am
First & Foremost says:
LMA has stepped his game up but Kevin Love stepped his up even more from last year to this year. Yes Duncan should have been the odd man out.
The Cavs can ONLY rebuild through the draft because NO ONE wants to go there or even be there right now. They went from an Elite team to a contraction candidate in the span of 6 months. The problem with building through the draft is that they don’t have any good assets to trade away for high picks. Everyone on their roster would only fetch a 2nd rounder to a team that will already be picking in the late 20′s. Aside from Lebron they haven’t exactly gotten too many base hits.

JBaller says:
I must have missed something, because I don’t see shades of MJ when I look at Kwame; especially not when I watch him play!
Melo’s gonna fit right in with the Knicks. In a league where you need more than one star on your roster to go deep in the post season, there is no second banana. Now there may be a third banana, ie. BOsh, but no second banana.

Because Denver as a team just guns and the Lakers run a motion offense to get easy shots. Melo goes for 50 because he was hot and gunning. Kobe goes for 50 by scrapping his teams set play. Not hating on Kobe, but that it the difference wtfisthis.

@ First and Foremost – good point about their draft prospects, but I don’t think that they’re going to have to worry about locking up the #1 pick this year haha.
On top of that, this isn’t the year to stockpile draft picks. From what I understand/observe, it’s not going to be a historic class by any means.

Anyone hear about the rumors that Denver and the Lakers are discussing about Melo?
February 8th, 2011 at 2:25 pm
First & Foremost says:
@Dagwaller With the lack of player movement soon to be in place, the same teams will still be contenders. So even if they get a bunch of Conditional 1st or 2nd round picks they will still be pretty low in the draft. If the Cavs could draft and develop players, they wouldn’t be in this position in the first place.
As for the draft class… people said the same thing about Blake’s class. The only sure pick was him and then Evans, Jennings, & Curry hve emerged to become buding stars. You never know, they could luck up and draft an Arenas or Millsap player.
They can always do what the Patriots do and trade out of the current draft for even more picks the following year.
February 8th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
First & Foremost says:
@YoungFed – I wouldn’t say hands down Kobe is the best in the league. Melo scores so effortlessly. They both have the same range, both can play in the post, excellent mid range games, but I think Melo is the more efficient scorer.
If Durant operated in the post most, I’d claim him to be the HANDS DOWN BUCKETS CHAMP. He shoots over most defenders, nice mid range, AND could compete with Ray Allen in a rat race.

@Nolan… Congrats for finding a mistake in the article. Would you like a cookie? A pat on the back? A gold star? Fine, they made a mistake but do you have any input related to basketball?
Do your parents take you out for ice cream everytime you find a mistake online? Are you one of those people that complain at grocery stores about 10 items or less/fewer?
So what if grammatical errors are made, are you that inept at using context clues to find the meaning the writer is trying to convey?
Go get a life and then lose it.

Thanks Mr. Foremost!! And mistakenly writing “between” instead of “among” is not a context clue, jackass. Stick to playing fantasy football and leave writing be for a while.
February 8th, 2011 at 4:39 pm
First & Foremost says:
Are you telling me that you couldn’t draw the conclusion that K-Mart and Melo have an easier time scoring than a professional team of basketball players, because of one mistake in the paragraph? Does among and between really change the concept that much?
You could just say to yourself, “There was a mistake in this article, however I do understand what the author meant. In actuality their problem is defense since they have scored greater than 87 points on several occasions.”
Have a nice day Mr. Nolan.
