After an intense workout at the Under Armour Charged Cotton Event, we were invited back for some fruit smoothies and Gunnar Peterson-approved snacks. In-between mingling with other writers and being fitted for a UA Performance mouthpiece, I got a chance to meet Miles Austin, Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. In case you didn’t know, before Austin became a football sensation he was a standout basketball player at Garfield High School in New Jersey, earning second-team All-Bergen honors in basketball and tallying 1,028 points for his career. I got up with Miles to discuss Tony Romo, the Nets moving to Brooklyn and being a Laker fan. Read More »
Is it mandatory that everything Blake Griffin does is highlight worthy? We’re not complaining. Also, check out another windmill from Blake Superior after the jump.
Considering the National Hockey League went from a legit “major” sport in the 1990s — even if you didn’t like hockey, you still had NHL 95 on Sega or Super Nintendo — to losing an entire season to a labor lockout, being relegated to Versus for a big chunk of its American national TV coverage, and getting less hype on ESPN than the X-Games, it’s safe to say the league didn’t do such a good job on the business side.
That said, pretty much everyone at Dime loved the NHL’s idea of having a player-led draft for its 2011 All-Star Game. And of course, we thought of doing it for the NBA. Read More »
Here’s the thing: Just because Rajon Rondo doesn’t score a lot, it doesn’t mean he can’t score. So we don’t always have to act surprised when Rondo gets buckets, like he did during yesterday’s Boston win over Orlando that served as the main Super Bowl appetizer … The Magic did what the scouting report said, sticking close to Ray Allen and Paul Pierce and forcing Rondo to look for his own shot. So considering he has a lethal first step, some of tightest handles in the League, and maybe the NBA’s best court vision, Rondo did what he’s supposed to do: Get into the lane and get layups. Before last season, we put you on to Lee University (Cleveland, Tenn.) forward Larriques Cunningham. Now in his senior year, Rico (as they call him) has added 15 pounds of muscle to his frame, and as his school claims, is “one of the best athletes in the country.” We’d be hard-pressed argue with that.
While a slew of buckets from their two All-Stars helped, at the end of the day, it was the Lakers’ defense that allowed them to pick up a big road win against the best defensive team in the West and quiet some of that “What’s wrong with L.A.?” talk for at least a weekend … Kobe Bryant and Co. went into last night’s game at New Orleans needing a statement win against a good team. It was shaping up to be just another typical night in Boston. You had the ugly, defensive game. There was an opponent that jumped out early but couldn’t shake the hosts because of their never-wavering grit. And of course, you had the obligatory “Kevin Garnett being a bully” thing going. But somehow, the Dallas
Mavericks found a way to beat the Celtics at their own game … Garnett (16 points) started off the night 6-for-6 from the field, hitting fadeaways, hook shots and even reversing home a layup. He looked like his old self. But in the first quarter, the Mavs put up 34 points on 67 percent shooting to go up by six. Read More »
