The reigning NBA Most Improved Player just became a backup. Again. Aaron Brook — who’d recently found himself stuck on the bench behind Kyle Lowry in Houston despite winning the Most Improved award last season while dropping 19 points per game and leading the NBA in three-pointers — has been traded to the Suns for Goran Dragic and Phoenix’s (Lottery-protected) first-round draft pick.
Brooks is averaging 11.6 points and 3.8 assists, and his shooting percentages are way down from last year: 34% from the field, 28% beyond the arc. Read More »

For the past couple days, two teams have been in the sweepstakes for Cleveland swingman Anthony Parker: Boston and Chicago. The Celtics are said to be offering their 2011 first-round pick and the expiring contract of Marquis Daniels (who could be out for the year), while the Bulls have two first-round picks this year to sweeten the pot. The same thing happens every year. After being dangled as bait up until the trade deadline passes, whoever doesn’t get a bite is often bought out and then heads to a contender. Or, if they are traded, there’s always the possibility they could return to their previous team (read: Zydrunas Ilgauskas). As of right now, there are three such players that will most likely be bought out and taking their talents elsewhere: T.J. Ford, Troy Murphy and Jason Kapono. Here’s what we’re hearing. Read More »
At the end of the day, talent trumps everything. Two contending teams need an explosive scoring two-guard, so in spite of all the red flags he may produce via bad relationships with coaches and off-court drama, J.R. Smith is potentially getting a shot at a ring this year.
According to ESPN, the Mavericks and Bulls are exploring trades for J.R. before the deadline. Dallas has been looking for an answer on the wing ever since Caron Butler went down for the season with a knee injury, and Chicago has been looking for the right fit alongside Derrick Rose ever since they lost Ben Gordon two years ago. No. 12 Wisconsin got all they could handle last from Michigan. The Wolverines were up on the Badgers late and had a chance to push the lead to three or four three with with a few seconds left in the game on a one-and-one, but Michigan’s Darius Morris missed the front end. That set the stage for Wisconsin’s Josh Gasser…
Break out the percolators, it’s trade deadline time. This time of year is always an exciting time at Dime Headquarters, when we’re constantly digging for the latest news and rumors to bestow upon our loyal allegiance. With Carmelo Anthony making his widely anticipated debut last night for the Knicks, dropping 27 points and 10 rebounds in his NY opener, all eyes turned to him (and Clyde Frazier’s Tiger-like coat) as he took the stage at The World’s Most Famous Arena. With that, let’s take a look at recent debut stat lines of some other marquee players who switched teams at or near the deadline. Read More »
What happened to all the point guards Minnesota selected in the 2009 NBA Draft? Ricky Rubio is still in Spain, Ty Lawson is starting in Denver, Nick Calathes is playing in Greece and Jonny Flynn is apparently on the block. (And I don’t mean like Shawne Williams.) According to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, the Timberwolves and Rockets are discussing a deal that would send Flynn to the Rockets. Read More »
There are obviously aftershocks from the big deals involving Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams earlier this week. With a few hours left before the trade deadline passes, there are more deals to discuss, involving guys like Baron Davis, Mo Williams and Kirk Hinrich.
