Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to pitch a story where I’d be actively watching 11 hours of basketball the day after my 25th birthday. Maybe I was worried that I wouldn’t be “well” enough to focus on pick and roll traps and 2-3 zones. (Maybe I shouldn’t be admitting that.) Either way, the usual questions arose: Would I be functioning by the 1:00pm start time? Would my supply of Pepto make it through the day? When would I shower? Read More »

In the midst of this surprising turn of events, and all of this bashing and crying caused by a Miami Heat meltdown, let’s take a step back for a second. 2007. Game 5. Eastern Conference Finals. I remember exactly where I was when this happened: at home, sprawled out on the couch and happy because school had just finished for the summer. Along with almost everyone else who watches basketball, I thought this performance was the start of a legacy. It didn’t matter if I wanted it to happen or not. It felt inevitable. There were so many parallels to Michael Jordan and how he finally overcame the Pistons just as LeBron had. Back in 2007, as far away as it seems now, James was on top of the world. This was supposed to be the opening act. Read More »
After a program-defining win at San Diego State, the BYU men’s basketball team, owners of a stellar 27-2 record and first place in the Mountain West Conference at the time, looked poised to capture a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. With the National Player of the Year in point guard Jimmer Fredette, and a No. 3 ranking in the country, fans in Provo were preparing for a run deep into March. Suddenly, however, the best team in the 136-year history of the Mormon school seemed to evaporate overnight. Forward Brandon Davies, the Cougars’ leading rebounder and third leading scorer, was dismissed from the team for violating the university’s honor code. Read More »
As a kid, I always used to attend Harvard athletic events with my dad. He graduated from Harvard in 1983 and was a big fan during his time in college and carried it with him out of college. We used to attend football games every year, and the occasional Crimson basketball game which usually ended with a Harvard loss, but they were still fun.
However, when Tommy Amaker was hired as head coach at Harvard in 2007, he brought some interest to the program as a big name hire – but nobody really knew what to expect because Harvard had never been good at basketball. Read More »
After a whirlwind of important games this past week with San Antonio, Miami, Chicago, Orlando and the L.A. Lakers all revealing more about themselves, the pictures are coming together. It is about time we took a look at the best MVP candidates. While there is still a possibility these rankings will change in the final month of the regular season, don’t expect anyone new to break into this group. The MVP will almost surely be given to one of these five players. Read More »
It’s not that the dunk is so crazy that it warrants its own post – because it’s not. It’s the fact that Paul Pierce is ripping this dunk. Seriously, when was the last time anyone saw him attack the rim like this?
The Heat need to call Kyra Sedgwick. Or Michael Jordan. They could even call Vince Carter; he made a couple of clutch shots last night. For now, the Heat might as well make Mario Chalmers their go-to guy down the stretch. He seems like the only one who can make shots for them when the game is tight. Their stars, on the other hand, are cold as ice … This season, in the last 10 seconds of a game that they are trailing by three points or less, Miami is 1-18 from the field, the worst mark in the entire league. The Heat added two of those misses yesterday after LeBron James (26 points) and Dwyane Wade (20 points) blew a layup and a jumper respectively in their one-point loss against Chicago. It was Miami’s fourth straight loss and another blown double-digit lead as Chicago made all of the big plays to come from behind in the fourth quarter … You can criticize the Big Three all you want for being unable to deliver clutch baskets, but look at the rest of the team as well. They scored just 17 points combined. Read More »
