Vince Carter On UNC: “Hopefully We Can Get To That Final Four”

Vince Carter

This past weekend, the Phoenix Suns came into L.A. looking to capitalize on a pair of games against the city’s two hometown franchises. While the Lakers would hand them a crushing 3OT loss this past Tuesday, two days earlier, the Suns were busy mopping up the Blakers for a nice 108-99 win at Staples Center. This was also the same Sunday that both Duke and North Carolina were fortunate enough to escape serious second-round upset bids from both Michigan and Washington, respectively. After the Suns’ victory over the Clippers, we were able to catch up with one of Tobacco Road’s most famed alums, Vince Carter, to get his take on the NCAA Tournament thus far. Read More »

Kyle Who? Oregon’s E.J. Singler Steps Out Of His Bro’s Shadow

E.J. Singler

If you have an older sibling, maybe you know how Oregon’s E.J. Singler feels. They’re always a step ahead, always a tad stronger, always setting expectations high. When you do accomplish something, they never fail to overshadow you anyway.

But imagine being in a hoops-driven family, following in the footsteps of Duke All-American Kyle Singler. There were the McDonald’s honors out of high school and a ride to play for one of the most heralded programs for a coach who only goes by a letter for a last name.

That was sophomore E.J. Singler’s life. He’s not sorry about it either. Read More »

Dime #63: Derrick Rose Is The MVP

Derrick Rose

There comes a time in every sports fan’s life when we start to feel old. Often, it’s when certain athletes whom we’ve watched grow up have the audacity to get old right before our eyes. Consider the experience of the fan who watched Karl Malone (‘85) and Scottie Pippen (’87) get drafted, become superstars, retire, and then get inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. That’s a long time. Read More »

Industry Experts: Twitter Is The Gateway To Becoming The Next Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard

While at the Athlete Branding panel at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference a few weeks ago, something strange occurred. A person from the crowd asked the group, which featured Greg Via (Sports Marketing Global Director for Gillette), Phil de Picciotto (President of Octagon), Lawrence Norman (adidas Vice President of Global Basketball) and Sarah Robb O’Hagan (President of Gatorade North America), who the most marketable current athlete in sports is. Us basketball fans would assume it would be either Kobe Bryant or LeBron James, but an unexpected consensus answer came out from the panel. Read More »

Reynolds Rap: Jersey Numbers, Sweating The iPad 2 & Behind The Scenes With The Chicago Bulls

Reynolds Rap: Dime's NBA D-League Diary With Scottie Reynolds

After an illustrious four-year career at Villanova, Scottie Reynolds didn’t go down the typical path of a consensus First Team All-American. Finishing his tenure at ’Nova second all-time in scoring and leading the Wildcats to a Final Four appearance in ’09, Scottie went undrafted in 2010. After a brief stint with Prima Veroli in Italy, he set his sights back on America, specifically the Springfield Armor of the D-League, in hopes of getting the opportunity to play at the next level. As one of the perennial figures of Villanova Basketball and a current standout in the D-League, we decided there was no one better to turn to for an inside scoop on life in the NBA’s minor league. In his latest entry, Scottie talks about his favorite jersey numbers, the iPad 2 and a trip he took with Ed Pinckney. Read More »

Daily Fantasy Diagnosis: 3.25

Paul Millsap

Beast of the Night: Paul Millsap finished with 33 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. He shot 65 percent (13-20) from the field, 88 percent (7-8) from the free-throw line and had one turnover. Millsap sandwiched two mediocre games between this one and his monster game on Sunday. His worn-down body is still a concern but he should be fine to finish the season on a strong note. Read More »

No. 1 Duke Gets Shocked; Jimmer Fredette Withdrawal Kicks In

Jimmer Fredette

Let that boy cook! You know if we didn’t consider ourselves semi-smart, we would say the NCAA did us dirty. Scheduling the two most exciting players in the country at the same time was just a low blow. It didn’t help that both of them had the kitchen burning up and the remotes wearing out … When you think about it, UConn’s seven-point win over San Diego State and Florida’s nine-point overtime win over BYU were really only watchable because of two guys: Kemba Walker and Jimmer Fredette. Everything else was sloppy, filled with turnovers, ugly jumpers, failed final possessions and technicals. The games were close, but take away those two players and we are talking mid-major excitement. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) Read More »
