NBA Admits Kendrick Perkins’ Tip Should Not Have Counted

All morning, people have been talking about Kendrick Perkins‘ basket with 1:05 remaining in Oklahoma City’s four-point win over Denver last night. As Nuggets head coach George Karl put it bluntly after the game, “Obviously it was goaltending.” This afternoon, the NBA agreed:

“Kendrick Perkins was improperly credited with a basket that should have been ruled offensive basket interference with 1:05 remaining in last night’s game. Although a player is permitted to touch the net while the ball is in the cylinder above the rim, Perkins also touched the ball while it was still in the cylinder which is a violation and constitutes goaltending.”

As Tom Ziller notes, “Unfortunately for the Nuggets, offensive basket interference is not reviewable by referees; whatever the officials call in realtime stands, unless other officials immediately change the call.”
