Think you have seen a gym rat before? You haven’t seen until you’ve met Mike Slonina, a senior at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, Mass. Even Larry Legend would do a double take at this kid. Slonina, however, never played one game of high school basketball. After a misdiagnosed ankle injury, his career was cut short and he never got to play. Instead, he was the team manager. His life took another hard turn when his mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Slonina decided he would take matters into his own hands and raise money for the cause. This was no usual fundraiser though. Slonina decided to shoot a basketball for 24 hours straight. Read More »
On Feb. 1, 2008, Michael Heisley, the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Chris Wallace, the team’s general manager, were the two most vilified men in the NBA. They had just traded Pau Gasol to the Lakers in a move that was seen as one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history. They turned the Lakers into instant championship contenders, while getting pennies on the dollar in return. The package they got included Javaris Crittenton (now out of the League), Kwame Brown, a practically retired Aaron McKie, two late first-round picks, and the rights to Pau’s brother, Marc Gasol. Even though Perry Jones has decided to prolong his college career, we though we’d take a look at his NBA potential. It’s not often that a potential top-5 pick decides to return to school, but unlike Harrison Barnes or Jared Sullinger, the first word that comes to mind with Jones is “potential.” Take a look as we debate the potential of one of the best talents in college basketball. One thing about the playoffs, if you watch enough games, you can begin to expect what’s going to happen next. That’s not to say they aren’t fun, but sometimes things can get very predictable. After a weekend of basketball sent from the gods, we couldn’t really expect a repeat. Yet that’s not even what we’re talking about. Miami and Chicago both nearly lost Game 1s at home against inferior opponents. If you know anything about the NBA Playoffs, Game 2 blowouts from the higher seeds were completely expected. The Heat did their part, but Indiana refused to throw the white flag in Chicago … Read More »
“Ooooo. They got crab cakes in here?” Yes, they did, and Dime’s visit to Miami to check out the newest sneaker from LeBron James’ line, the Nike LeBron 8 PS, had a lot more than that. Eating crab cakes and some other weird seafood (I heard the name countless times, but still can’t say or spell it) in a suite during the Heat’s Game 1 win over the Sixers was great. But the real reason why I went down there, the real reason why I got up at 4 a.m. to catch a flight on Friday morning, was to check out the kicks. Read More »
All morning, people have been talking about Kendrick Perkins‘ basket with 1:05 remaining in Oklahoma City’s four-point win over Denver last night. As Nuggets head coach George Karl put it bluntly after the game, “Obviously it was goaltending.” This afternoon, the NBA agreed: Read More »
With the ghost of MJ constantly looming in the Windy City, there are expectations for the Bulls to relive some of that magic in this year’s NBA Playoffs. Despite Chicago clinching the No. 1 seed for the entire postseason, a lot of people are still skeptical on whether they have the experience to get by the likes of Boston and L.A. Whether they do so or not, they have proven this year that they are a force in this league and are/will be legit contenders for some time to come. Read More »
Today is my first day back in the office in over a week, and boy am I glad I made it in. After finishing my lunch, a large, heavy brown box was delivered for me, and I legitimately had no clue what it could contain. Normally I’ll get kicks and gear for upcoming photo shoots in the mag, but that was last week. What could this be? So after multiple layers of bubble wrap, this is what I got: Read More »
