1-on-1: A Game 7,000 Miles In The Making

1-on-1

It didn’t used to be like this.

He used to be so small. When I was a senior in high school, my youngest brother Tim was nine. I was the big brother, the family basketball star that the cheerleaders chanted for. He was a doughy little kid who sat with my parents in the bleachers.

Now he’s in the car with me, and we’re about to play a game of 1-on-1 that’s been months in the making. My brother is a soldier. He’s been in the Middle East, in one of the places that’s always on the news. We’ve been planning a basketball game ever since he deployed, and here he is, 7,000 miles later, about to lace them up with me. Read More »

NBA Draft: WSU’s Klay Thompson Is 2011′s Best Shooting Guard

Klay Thompson

When Washington State junior Klay Thompson decided that his playing days in Pullman had come to an early close this past spring, the decision seemed to come with some hesitation attached. Leaving school early is a difficult decision for any prospect to make, much less for those balling on Pacific Time in front of far fewer national eyeballs than their East Coast brethren. For anyone who was able to catch the 6-7 guard burn up the Pac-10 nets the past three seasons though, it was anything but surprising. And as he looks to make the jump to the pros this June, Thompson is asserting himself as the top shooting guard in a class eager to prove its collective worth. Read More »

Who’s Better: Joe Johnson Or Andre Iguodala?

Joe Johnson

When you start talking about the best swingmen in the game, the conversation always begins and ends with people like LeBron, Wade, Kobe and Pierce. Those guys are Hall of Famers. As we saw last week with our Wade. vs. Kobe post, there are differing opinions on who’s the best. Below them, there’s a second tier of swingmen who can win games, but just aren’t quite franchise talent, players like Atlanta’s Joe Johnson and Philly’s Andre Iguodala. Read More »

Kevin Durant Channels Neo, Gets Caught In The Matrix

Remember at the end of The Matrix when Neo gets shot and finally realizes that he is The One? Well, Kevin Durant was almost there last night. Although Shawn Marion got him this time, expect KD to come back better than ever in his next fight against The Agents.

Dirk Brings The Noise

Dirk Nowitzki

Hello? KD, you there? Russell? Heeelloooo? Scottie Brooks is that you? Damn, Dirk really shut up an entire team, an entire city. Brooks said in the postgame that if you aren’t upset after a loss like this, then you can’t get upset over any loss. He’s right. Blowing a 15-point lead in the final four-plus minutes in a pivotal Game 4 is about as low as it gets. Oklahoma City had everything lined up to punch a 2-2 ticket back to Dallas. Except Dirk wasn’t cooperating, and after Dallas’ epic 112-105 overtime win, it’s not even a question anymore. Dirk Nowitzki won’t let his team lose. Perhaps the Thunder’s only hope? Calling Mike O’Hara and Jimmy FlahertyRead More »

Manu Ginobili: I Played With A Broken Arm In The Playoffs

Manu Ginobili

How ironic: one of the NBA’s worst floppers wasn’t given credit for his superhuman performance because he didn’t quite flaunt it. In the midst of a Western cinderella rudely exposing the Spurs in the first round, we all missed something. Manu was hurt, bad enough that he actually had to sit out Game 1 of the series. He went on to average over 20 points a game the rest of the way, but never really gave us that dose of championship shot-making we are used to seeing from him (besides of course one insane shot at the end of Game 5). NBA 2K11: The Bulls Will Win The NBA Championship

Derrick Rose in 2k11

In real life, the Bulls might be down 2-1 and be driving an emptying bandwagon. But on the sticks in NBA 2K11, they are champions, says 2K Sports. Using 12-minute quarters with the latest roster updates on the All-Star difficulty, our friends over at 2K Sports simulated the conference finals and NBA Finals. It took seven games for Chicago to win a ring, seven ruthless games over the Dallas Mavericks with Derrick Rose blowing up for an average of 33 points and nearly 10 assists in Games 5-7. Not surprisingly, the NBA’s MVP won the Finals MVP as well. Read More »
