Playing in the same American Century Celebrity Golf Championship as Jimmer Fredette, Charles Barkley heads into the tournament with 500-1 odds. Arguably the most entertaining basketball personality on television, Barkley has no reservations about speaking his mind. I caught up with Chuck yesterday to talk about Jordan, LeBron, Shaq, gambling and the looming NBA lockout. Read More »
Tickets to Rock the Bells 2011 would be the best birthday present I could ask for. Think about it like this. Illmatic. The Infamous. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. 93 ‘Til Infinity. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Enter Da Stage. Black Star. Liquid Swords. Take the greatest hip-hop albums ever, pile ‘em together into a list and I’m betting the names of all of these come up. If Kevin Garnett is truly on to something, don’t be surprised if the traditional celebratory Gatorade shower is replaced by coconut water in the near future.
Coconut water – a mix of water, potassium, calcium and magnesium extracted from coconuts – has experienced a recent growth in popularity as a competitor to traditional sports drinks, and has apparently taken the NBA by storm. Read More »
Why do we like the little guy in basketball? Because it reminds us of ourselves, the ones who missed out on the two-foot growth spurt that we swear could make us into NBA players? Because it gives us a glance at someone doing something they aren’t exactly supposed to do? Maybe. We like underdogs.
Dallas’ J.J. Barea fits that mold. The whirling dervish dropped 17 points and five assists on the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. How can a guy who’s not even 6-feet tall – teammate Brian Cardinal said he might be 6-feet in stilettos – do this over giants? And how did he score Miss Universe 2006 being so short? And is she taller than him when she’s wearing stilettos? Read More »
During Game 6 in Dallas last night, Jeff Van Gundy said “the best predictor of future behavior is prior acts.” (I went back to my DVR at midnight and fast-forwarded through almost the entire first half to find the exact quote.)
Why did I waste 30 minutes of my life searching for this?
Because Rick Carlisle has coached three teams in the NBA, and he always makes them better. A lot better (see the below graphic). Read More »
Most NBA prospects are used to being in their gym clothes all the time. They sport their gym shorts and basketball shoes wherever they go, including when they arrive at a team’s facility for a workout. Not Xavier Silas though. Silas, a senior shooting guard out of Northern Illinois University in this June’s NBA Draft, dresses up when he goes to these workouts. Read More »
I watched Game 5 in a bar full of my anti-Heat friends. When Jason Terry sank that off-balanced, are-you-kidding-me three, a “U-S-A!” chant broke out first amongst my friends, then throughout the entire bar. When I asked why that started, I was told that what Miami did this offseason was “un-American.” So congratulations, Dallas, for winning America’s heart. Now to the rest of the winners and losers. Remember about oh…four years ago? Obama wasn’t president yet. Tiger was still ballin’. And LeBron was in Cleveland. Not only that, he was on his way to the NBA Finals, had destroyed Detroit in the Eastern Conference Finals, and for three consecutive years had stepped his game up in the playoffs. We all thought it was the beginning of his legacy. He was the guy you feared in the fourth quarter. He was universally adored. Read More »
