It’s officially over. Shaq Diesel is done. For as long as he’s stayed in the spotlight and for all that he’s milked it for, O’Neal’s press conference speech was interestingly speedy. He must’ve had one sentence on each one of those index cards because he was flipping through them at will. He thanked everyone, from his family to his college coach to Phil Jackson to the media for the way they treated him over the years. And what would have been a Shaq press conference without a gimmick? Just as he sat down, he fielded a fake phone call from the Knicks asking him to come be their general manager … Read More »

After leading Washington to back-to-back conference titles in the Pac-10 Tournament over the last two seasons, junior Isaiah Thomas (who also claimed back-to-back conference MOP honors in those same title runs) decided the time was right to test his talents on another level: the NBA. During his time in Seattle, the 5-9 guard was nothing short of an offensive force. After averaging 16.9 points and 3.9 assists a game as a sophomore, he returned this season to drop 16.8 and 6.1 per and navigate UW to a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament. And as the kid embarks on his journey away from college and into the pros, we wanted to give him his own space, and voice, to roam. So, follow along with Isaiah on his Dime NBA Draft Diary and entry No. 2…Read More »
19 years ago, what were you doing today? June 3. 1992. Chances are you weren’t in the NBA Finals. And chances are you weren’t hitting six threes in a half because as you know, it’s kinda rare. Rare enough that the GOAT did it 19 years ago today and it even made him shrug.
Don’t call it a comeback… but Gilbert Arenas is back slinging knowledge in 140 character segments on Twitter at his handle @agentzeroshow. And to welcome his new followers to the hilarity of Gil tweets, he’s giving away some personal kicks. Around 110 kicks to be exact. Read More »
One of the most acclaimed basketball writers in the world, Charley Rosen has spent years around the game. He played it at an MVP-level for Hunter College from 1959-62. He played it in the Eastern League (a forerunner to the CBA). And he coached it with Phil Jackson.
Since then, Rosen has authored 15 well-received books, among them Barney Polan’s Game, Scandals of ’51 and Maverick (co-authored with Jackson), a ballplayer-turned-journalist. Read More »
Apparently Jimmy Kimmel just started to notice that players in the NBA had tattoos. So who better to judge the artwork than the always entertaining Mike Tyson. Watch as Iron Mike dishes on the ink of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, DeShawn Stevenson, Kenyon Martin, Chris “Birdman” Andersen and Marquis Daniels – where they actually use photos that originally ran in Dime.
I don’t have the exact statistics handy, but I’m sure of this: the NBA is a code that’s damn near impossible to crack. Of the thousands of potential prospects in collegiate competition and foreign clubs around the world, there are still only 60 draft slots available each June.
For some, seeing their replica jersey adorn store shelves has been a foregone conclusion since middle school, while others have taken a more unconventional route through minor league lineups and 10-day contracts. But whatever path is ultimately taken to the NBA, it’s undoubtedly filled with its share of surprises, sidetracks and lucky moments. Read More »
