My mom thinks I have a sneaker problem. I tell her she just doesn’t understand. But last week, I was able to add a pair to the collection that even she could rally behind. Introducing the New Balance newSKY. At 620 Loft & Garden high above Fifth Avenue, New Balance invited me and some others to re-imagine recycling with environmentally-conscious footwear made almost entirely from recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles. In case you forgot, the 2012 Olympic Games head to London next summer. But where will they play basketball? Construction on the Basketball Arena began in October 2009 and completed within budget this June. So what does it take to erect a 1,000-ton, 115-foot high steel frame that houses 12,000 black and orange seats, one of the largest temporary venues ever built for any Games? Watch this. After the jump, check out some photos of the arena as well.
Despite only entering the league this spring, Maya Moore has already become the proud owner of the WNBA’s best-selling jersey. Why is this a big deal you may ask? This is based on sales from October 2010 through June 2011. Not bad for this April’s No. 1 pick sporting No. 23 for the Minnesota Lynx. And in case you were wondering, Moore supplanted Candace Parker who has held the top ranking since October 2008 and boasts the best-selling jersey in NBA Store history. Read More »
What’s not to like about award shows? There are red-carpet mishaps, awkward jokes, and plenty of opportunities to gamble. Award shows are always entertaining, but they are even better when they are about sports. Okay, so maybe Righteous Kill wasn’t the greatest movie. It was generic. It was boring. And it was interesting for perhaps the first 30 minutes in the theatre. Then I had an epiphany: wait, this isn’t going to be Heat. It DEFINITELY isn’t going to be The Godfather, Part II either. I guess my expectations were just a little too high. Who cares if it isn’t a classic? That’s not exactly the worst thing you can say about a flick. But when Robert De Niro and Al Pacino get together on a movie (I’m counting the second Godfather, even though it doesn’t completely work here, only because it was such an ill film), that’s what I expect. Whether or not fans in southern Texas like to hear it, the San Antonio Spurs are headed toward a crossroads at which they’ll have to come to one of the hardest decisions in franchise history: What are they to do with Tim Duncan?
Although Duncan and the men in black were world champions just four years ago, it has become increasingly evident that Duncan is beginning to fade. At age 35, who can blame him? The Big Fundamental’s minutes have been limited the last two years in an effort to save his energy for the playoffs, a strategy that has led to an increased offensive tempo in the River City. Chances are you lost your fantasy basketball league this past season. That’s not an insult – them’s just the breaks (and the odds). There are many possible levels of depression for you to fall into as you look back on your failed campaign, ranging from shoulder-shrugging apathy to something akin to the razor-sharp despair I felt upon hearing that my long-time crush Natalie Portman was knocked up by some French dancer.
If you’re in that “Portman Zone” of sorrow, I have good news for you: you’re already closer to taking a step in the right direction next season. This shows that you actually care and are probably open to learning from your mistakes to get some delicious vengeance in 2011-12. Read More »
