After Bow Wow kind of called him out on Twitter last year, they settled the debate on the court during Kobe’s Basketball Academy. Great timing with our 1-on-1 NBA Tournament going on, Kobe gives it to ‘em like this: “S— is a lot different swimming with Great Whites than seeing them mother f—— on the Discovery Channel…”
Football is more than just a sport at the University of Georgia; it is like a cult that seduces the entire campus into a frenzy every Saturday each fall. Students and alumni alike, 92,000 of them in all, head to Sanford Stadium each Saturday to watch their beloved Bulldogs play “between the hedges.” The team has produced two national titles, 12 SEC titles, and 731 wins in its history. Recently the team has enjoyed enormous success under Coach Mark Richt (outside of this past season when the team finished with only six wins) and has recently been home to some of college football’s biggest stars including quarterback Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions), running back Knowshon Moreno (Denver Broncos), and wide receiver A.J. Green (Cincinnati Bengals). With the success and popularity of football at Georgia so dominating on campus, the basketball program has struggled to make a dent in Athens. Read More »
Predicting the future isn’t an exact science, especially in the NBA. Ask the Clippers in 2005. Ask Portland in 2000. Ask Orlando in 1995. Ask Houston in 1985. Free agency, trades, the disease of more, petty jealousies and personal problems…they can all rip a team to shreds. Out of every five 40-win teams with upside, perhaps one will eventually turn into a legit contender. The rest fall by the wayside, victims of their own promise. Read More »
This is what a Celtics fan uttered to me the other day. My gut reaction compelled me to intensely berate him. You know when a friend refuses to alter his mind-boggling stance on a sports issue? And you know how that causes you to abandon any sliver of respect you had saved for him? That’s how I felt. James and Pierce aren’t even on the same stratosphere. Derrick Rose is a rival to James. Dwight Howard is a rival. Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire are rivals. But not Pierce. Read More »
Imagine this: Amar’e Stoudemire putting up elbow jumpers in the Holy Land. Kobe posting up in Rome after a stroll down the Spanish Steps. And most realistically, Deron Williams trading Russian billionaire for Turkish Delight in Istanbul. If D-Will is giving us good info, then this just might be the case – ever since, Williams announced his plans to migrate to the Turkish team, Besiktas, rumors have swirled about locked-out NBAers starting up a mass migration to Europe to play ball in 2011-12. The pickings just keep getting smaller. No matter what you think will happen over the next few months – will NBA guys warm up to the idea of playing somewhere outside the NBA or will they decide against it? – the fact remains that the majority of them won’t be able to play there. Yes, won’t. No, it has nothing to do with on-court talent, the ability to mesh into a team system or even the possibility that they come over and outshine the entire team. It’s just that there really aren’t that many jobs available. Read More »
The second giant is now gone. Just a short time after hearing Shaquille O’Neal call it quits, Yao Ming is joining him on the sidelines after multiple injuries with his legs and feet (stress fracture in his foot and tendon strain in his left leg) that never healed. It’s a sad day for everyone involved in the game. Most of this generation isn’t used to seeing athletes’ bodies fail them at an early age (Yao is still only 30 and was 28 before going down for good). But that’s what happens when you’re 7-6 and carrying well over 300. Read More »
One year ago on this day, LeBron James told the world he was taking his talents to South Beach. A lot has transpired in the 12 months since that fateful day, on and off the court. He’s been compared to everyone from Michael Jordan to Benedict Arnold. He’s been called clutch and he’s been called a choker. He’s made cool commercials and he’s dunked on children. We’re here to recount some of the ups and downs from LBJ’s first year in Miami. Read More »
YAO’s IMPACT ON THE NBA:
During the past eight seasons, dozens of Chinese media members covering the Houston Rockets have swarmed into the depths of every NBA arena, outnumbering the beat writers, magazine journalists and national pundits. For that, they can thank Yao Ming. Read More »
