Brian Cardinal is the definition of a journeyman. With his sixth NBA team, the man affectionately named “The Custodian” finally got to the Promised Land, hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy with the Dallas Mavericks this June. On a team where every player had a specific role to play, Cardinal played his to perfection, coming in and making life miserable for Chris Bosh and LeBron James in the paint. Cardinal also made the most of his opportunities with the ball, knocking down some huge three-pointers in Game 5 and 6. Recently we caught up with Brian to talk about whatever was on his mind. Is there a better national team frontcourt than Spain? The Gasol brothers and Serge Ibaka: completely different and yet they complement each other perfectly. They have defense, length, athleticism, touch, shooting and toughness. Ibaka actually is saying he can be an All-Star either next year or the year after. We believe him. Everyone is riding the James Harden train right now and deservedly so. The Beard was balling in the playoffs and looks like he could be the second coming of a Paul Pierce-type player. But Ibaka is OKC’s third-most important player. Read More »
The Jordan Brand Flight Tour kicked off in Hong Kong where Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul celebrated the game of basketball with Chinese consumers. The fist day of the four-city tour offered both ‘Melo and CP the opportunity to coach the Nike U19 Chinese All-Stars at Southorn Stadium. Every now and then, we all have to bring back our inner child. This weekend, my older sister hosted a small group of her friends for a weekend of socializing, relationship and wedding drama, and, of course, wine drinking. While I was perfectly willing to sit around and chit-chat with older, pretty girls, there came a point where I could no longer stand the useless blathering on – you know, why one girl’s wedding invitation was tasteful while another’s was a travesty. On July 27, 1993, Reggie Lewis collapsed and died while playing basketball at Brandeis University in what doctors deemed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. While he had showed signs of heart problems before – he actually collapsed in one playoff game against Charlotte – no one figured it would come to this. R.I.P.
You knew after Blake Griffin introduced the Nike Zoom Hyperdunk 2011, that he’d be receiving some sick PEs. And while he wore a variation during the All-Star Game in February, I think we’ll seeing a lot more of these once the NBA season rolls around. Check ‘em out: Read More »
Meet the next big name in women’s hoops: Diamond DeShields. A 6-1 forward out of Georgia’s Norcross High School, DeShields is coming off a monster season in which she posted 19.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game to lead Norcross to its second consecutive state title. Last July, Amar’e Stoudemire made waves when he took a trip to Israel to research his Jewish roots. The trip was embraced by Jews everywhere, including myself, as it is not everyday that a 6-9 athletically gifted NBA All-Star declares himself to be a member of the tribe (a colloquial expression used by Jewish people to refer to other Jewish people). So when I saw former University of Florida power forward Alex Tyus tweet before the NBA Draft that he was hosting his Draft party at the UF Hillel, I thought to myself, “Is another 6-9 athletic power forward joining the tribe?” The answer to that question is yes.
