Chances are you’ve never heard of Jaqawn Raymond. But I guarantee that’ll change. The incoming NC State freshman from Statesboro, Ga. looks like he’s going to be a steal for the Wolfpack this season. Need some confirmation? Just ask Duke’s Andre Dawkins. Other than the block, the best part of this clip from the Greater NC Pro-Am is Rasheed Wallace – who’s on Raymond’s opposing team – coming over to the young fella to show him some love.
You might wonder how a random Tuesday in the middle of the lockout is one of the shining moments from Dime’s illustrious 10-year history. But for those that were in attendance at Malcolm X Park in Roxbury, Mass. yesterday, they know that basketball is more than a game. Read More »
I’ve been busy the last few days, so I have not been able to catch much of Shark Week so far. But I assure you, it is one of my favorite weeks of the year. One of my lifelong goals is swimming with Whites. Definitely freaky, but I have to do it. Naturally during Shark Week, it’s only fitting to combine two things I love: sharks and basketball. Watching Great Whites feast on seals off the coast of South Africa is always the highlight of the week. For them it’s so simple: seek and destroy. Survive or die. Read More »
Arvydas Sabonis was, and remains, a big figure in Portland, a point that will be reinforced after his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next month. The city is inviting back Sabonis on Aug. 18 to be honored for his seven seasons in the Rose City. It’s an appropriate gesture for the 7-3 Lithuanian, who along with the concept of brewing, is still one of Portland’s most treasured imports. Read More »
When I read on ESPN last Friday that the Carrier Classic between North Carolina and Michigan State was set to be played on the USS Carl Vinson on Nov. 11, what I thought was a brilliant article idea popped into my head: I would list the strangest places that NCAA and NBA games had been played. But after some research (read: Google searches), the only cool stuff I found was a Suns-Bucks game played in a baseball stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1972, and a WNBA exhibition played at the Radio City Music Hall. Not too exciting. Read More »
On Monday night, Kevin Durant decided it was time to take his game to the Mecca of streetball, and dropped 66 points at Rucker Park. Last night, his NYC summer hoops tour landed at Baruch College for Nike Pro City, where KD suited up and took on a Big Apple Basketball squad headlined by John Lucas III. While Lucas dropped 60 on 22-of-41 shooting, Durant eeked out the W in overtime, 146-143, and finished with 41.
The NBA has beaten its players. To court that is. As we wrote yesterday, David Stern and his associates have filed a lawsuit against the NBPA after long negotiations took place earlier this week in New York. The league is calling the players uncooperative, claiming they have threatened the league with decertification threats and lawsuits. Unlike the NFL, which coolly resolved all differences last week, the owners have put the smackdown on the players. The longer this goes, the harder it seems that an agreement will come to pass. This weekend, some of the Dime crew was in Philly for the Red Bull King of the Rock tournament and it was insane. I got the chance to catch up with a lot of the day’s best talent to talk about where they played ball growing up, and also to check out the best halftime show ever.
Paul Shirley encapsulated our interests because he told it like it was. He was just another guy, but one who happened to be at the end of an NBA bench, observing all the craziness that is the league, then having the forum and willingness to write about it. Sure, he happened to have decent enough basketball skills that most of us don’t, but it was that extra insight outside of the game that intrigued a growing readership. Read More »
Back in high school, the warm-up mix always had to be on point. We used to argue over the songs, sometimes had trouble landing edited versions and even had one kid constantly try to sneak his own tape over to the guys running it. It was a never-ending argument. I still remember coming out my senior year to T.I.‘s “Bring Em Out” which would seem appropriate, except that I never liked that song. It didn’t get me hyped at all (if we were gonna have T.I., I argued, it better be “What You Know”). Read More »
