LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul…on the court…at the same time…during the lockout? No way. There’s no way. Deron Williams isn’t scared or afraid. He’s also sick of justifying his decision. He wants to play in Turkey. The club over there, Besiktas, wants him to come. To him, that’s all that should matter. Williams spoke to the Salt Lake Tribune and vented on a number of things, most interestingly about his soon-to-be-realized trip to play professionally in Turkey. We might not believe Miami has it all figured out. But Dwyane Wade seems to think so. During an appearance on ESPN Radio, Wade said himself and LeBron “figured it out” and did a good job working together, in part because they are such good friends and get along so well. I don’t get to play video games as much as I did when I was younger. Now we have things like work, responsibility, waking up early, stuff like that. But, video games will never totally be out. The last time the San Antonio Spurs were in the lottery, they were selecting a young man named Tim Duncan with the first pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. Ever since then, they have been one of the past decade’s most successful teams by winning four NBA championships.
This was back when Elton Brand was still dunking on people, Alonzo Mourning was still balling and Vince Carter was still flying. But most all, my man Shammond Williams is showing out!
I think the best way to ponder our own inevitable passage into physical decline is to watch it happen to those who would seem invincible to such mortal constraints – and observe how they handle it.
I stayed up late the other night watching a documentary on HBO on Sugar Ray Robinson, and though I was thrilled at the dizzying heights he reached during arguably the greatest career a prizefighter has ever known, I was more deeply affected by what came later. Read More »
