Bikini Basketball games are always a good time, even when they really aren’t bikini basketball games. The final day of the Venice Basketball League earlier this month provided us with some much-needed entertainment…
Everyone wants to talk Goodman, Drew, Rucker, Impact, Dyckman and the rest of the best basketball summer leagues. Did we all forget about Venice Beach? One of the most well-known leagues in the country finished up its season on the first Saturday in September by crowning the Venice All-Stars league champions for the fourth year in a row after they beat the Mean Ones 66-60 in a wild final. The Wolf crosses over and jumps almost in the same instant, 360-ing through the air and then dunking even before Jesus can get his hand up. No one expected this. It’s 5-1, the Wolf, and Jesus is either scared, nervous, surprised or just plain disgusted with all of the greasy hair. The Wolf hasn’t shaved for a month they say, and he hasn’t bathed in twice that long. You can smell him from half court, drenched in sweat, slippery as a wet cat. Read More »
UPDATE: Tyreke Evans has committed to play for Team Philly.
What started as a friendly debate between former Syracuse teammates Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick, has turned into a full-blown, winner-take-all grudge match. And as with all basketball debates, this one can only be settled on the court. On Sept. 25 at 6 p.m., ‘Melo will take his talents down I-95 to the City of Brotherly Love, along with a squad that features LeBron James, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant. They will compete against Warrick’s team featuring Philly products Wayne Ellington, Markieff and Marcus Morris, John Salmons, and Flip Murrary. Read More »
It’s pitch dark. Echoing voices are bouncing off buildings. Laughter. A couple of varsity lettermen with their jackets on are playing like they always played. One-on-one.
“Get off me! GET OFF OF ME!”
How did they end up here? He doesn’t know. Something in his mind is telling him he can’t remember. Or maybe that’s because he doesn’t want to remember. He doesn’t even know what he’s doing, can’t control it. But there’s his old yellow and orange jacket, the one he threw into the river after it was all over, so he can tell this was sometime in high school. Read More »
A few weeks ago we introduced Under The Armour, a new web series starring the one and only Brandon Jennings. In the fourth episode, travel with Young Money to L.A., where he kicks it with his people in Gardena, gets in a workout and then hoops with Bow Wow, Game, J.R. Smith, Derrick Williams, DeMar DeRozan, Cuttino Mobley, and Marcus Williams. To wrap it up, Jennings hits the Boost Mobile Elite 24 with appearances by Aquille Carr, Kevin Durant, John Wall and Jamie Foxx.
There’s little doubt you heard Derek Fisher advising players to get ready for the season. Fisher is denying that he sent texts to players reminding them to stay in shape because a resolution was working itself together, but it got many fans in a tizzy. We honestly won’t believe it until we’re watching games on opening night. Negotiations have a funny way of going sour right when everything seemed all good. Either way, we’d love to see the season start soon since fall is fast approaching. Just give us something more official than vague texts, tweets and quotes … Minnesota might finally have a coach. Yesterday afternoon, Kevin Love tweeted out: Houston, we have a coach. Then later into the night, it was confirmed that Rick Adelman has agreed in principle to coach the T’Wolves. This is huge for them. Read More »
It’s safe to say that the lockout has definitely left its mark on the basketball world already. After word broke that the NBA was cancelling all NBA summer leagues, my heart was crushed. The fact that the rookies won’t initially be in NBA 2K12 has me convinced that they are taking this lockout thing a little too far, but that’s beside the point. A couple weeks ago we informed you about the “Lockout League” that will be taking place this fall out in Las Vegas. Why they didn’t think of this idea sooner is beyond me. It’s too bad that the games won’t be televised because the rosters look extremely intriguing. Unless you’ll be living the fast life in Sin City this fall, these lineups will have to serve as eye candy for now. And with that, here is Dime’s official roster breakdown of all eight teams. Last November when we unveiled the ANTA shoe that Kevin Garnett would be wearing after he left adidas, people had more than enough to say. Now when he returns for his 17th NBA season, he’ll be wearing his second official signature shoe with the brand – the ANTA KG 2. Check it out in two colorways: Read More »
In the history of basketball, neighborhoods have always played each other. Different teams in one city have played one another. Those aren’t original ideas, says Mac Williams, Goodman League webmaster. But playing different leagues from different cities? That’s a relatively new idea. And it’s one that the Goodman League is taking full advantage of. Read More »
