Normally birthdays are a cause for celebration. But for basketball fans worldwide, Yao Ming‘s 31st birthday is just another thing to hang on the “What if?” wall. The summer of quite literally the NBA’s biggest retirements (Yao & Shaq) gives us two examples of two different paths. O’Neal somehow avoided serious injuries and was able to play until he was nearly 39, finishing his career with 28,596 career points and 13,099 rebounds. In his first seven seasons, before injuries basically kept him out for all of the last two years, Yao was at 9,196 points and 4,467 rebounds.
For some reason, the scent of salt is identifiable even though we aren’t near the ocean. The court is full with everyone crowded around one basket.
“Ah, f— you, your mother’s an astronaut,” Moses Guthrie spits out. Yes, Moses said that, the man too cool for his own good, the player who’s never once lost his head in an ABA game. Is it happening here? Is he getting played by a 5-9 dude with a goofy smile, some grey baggy socks, a parental advisory shirt and one of the dirtiest hats on you’ve ever seen? Read More »

Entourage may be one of the most unrealistic television series of all time. In the final episode last night, Vince got married, Ari revived his broken marriage, and Sloan and Eric got back together. Let’s be honest: Life does not always have a happy ending. And most of the time, neither do basketball careers. That is why basketball players should not model their career after Vincent Chase. Shimmy shaking left to right, one player nearly smashes his face onto the gravel as a knee gives out. The other is alone at the rim, moving past him. All it takes is one dribble and the guard, rocking a shaved line down the middle of his head, lobs it to himself and finishes with a jam. Read More »
For those of you currently residing under a rock, there’s a lockout taking place in the NBA. According to Ken Berger from CBS Sports, the owners could possibly make a formal proposal to the players on Tuesday, September 13th. This would be the first proposal since June 30th and has the potential to make significant improvement in the current labor talks. Oh how lovely – a proposal. Well guess what, WE’RE NOT SATISFIED! In fact, were dying over here – sick to our stomachs. We’re tired of nba-players-going-overseas news. We’re disgusted that the most interesting news regarding any NBA player in-who-knows-how-long involves a Kardashian and a wedding. Read More »
Damn, are the Nuggets trying to send their whole team to China? They better hope the lockout ends sometime soon because they won’t have enough players. First Wilson Chandler. Then it was reported that J.R. Smith may soon become the highest paid player in Chinese Basketball Association history. Now, he may be topped by teammate Kenyon Martin, who has significant interest from two different clubs in the CBA. They are ready to give him an offer even greater than Smith’s. K-Mart is in line to have to take a huge pay cut from any NBA team that signs him (he’s a free agent). But in this setting, he’ll be the king. Read More »
Dirk used a lot of magic this spring in the NBA, but he saved a little something for Turkey. Nowitzki made four huge free throws in the final few seconds to beat Turkey by six. He had 19 for the game, but 13 of those came in the second half. You know Dirk’s one-footed fadeaways? Is there any shot ever that’s crazier? When he’s feeling it, like he was yesterday, he doesn’t even look, just turns his shoulder and chucks the ball at the hoop. The only way that works is through millions of repetitions. Read More »
I remember begging my mom to get HBO. I was 14 at the time and all my friends at school had it. Entourage was in it’s first season and had completely taken over their lives. Personally, I thought HBO was a show. At school, anytime I heard the word “entourage,” I figured it was just being used to describe a group of people. I kept those thoughts to myself. Read More »
