There were a lot of great dunks from Midnight Madness this year, but probably none better than Wagner’s Josh Thompson dunking over his mom. The 6-5 junior knew he had to bring it to win the contest – especially with Darryl Dawkins as one of the judges – and did just that with this dunk.
It’s funny how the players and the owners are just now using mediation via George Cohen to sort things out. They’ve been at odds for months and both sides, at least currently, aren’t willing to compromise. At the same time the players really don’t have leverage in this situation. So bringing in a mediator likely won’t solve things unless the players realize they’re nearly out of poker chips. Young stars like Durant and Rose can respectively stay hopeful and swear this long lockout wasn’t their doing. They were endorsing, not signing and cutting the checks after all. We’ve heard nothing but high praise – really high praise – for Cohen. Some are basically calling him a genius, the very best at what he does, and even someone who’s as smart as David Stern. But can he work a miracle? … Read More »
LeBron Jameswon’t quit hearing these jokes any time soon. But it comes with the territory. At a recent speaking engagement in Albany, New York, Magic Johnson went in on LeBron with an unplanned public roast. What made him go at the player who seemed to get nothing but praise out of Magic for so long? Not sure. Maybe boredom with the lockout. More than likely, he just wanted to catch a few laughs at the expense of a guy who can turn everyone into comedians right now. Read More »
To say that Charles Oakley doesn’t mince words is a dramatic understatement, especially when you consider that he’s one of a very select few with the cache to bust Michael Jordan’s chops.
“We have a lot of heated conversations about the league,” said Oakley with a hint of mischief about his longtime friend and current boss with the Bobcats. “About how he was the only guy who could travel 95 percent of the time and get seven fouls every game.”
Oak made an appearance at K1X’s new flagship store in New York City on Saturday to celebrate the rollout of their Charles Oakley Collection, and before signing autographs for fans, he held court with the media on a variety of topics, pulling very few punches as usual. Read More »
Friday night, Harvard University threw a party to celebrate its 375th birthday. Like most Harvard parties, this one was pretty lame (everything you saw in The Social Network was a lie). Sure there was a 15-by-18-foot cake, but the torrential downpour and the slew of old geezers rocking Vineyard Vines was a little too much to handle, so I was on my way back to my room to play some 2K12 within 30 minutes.
But while I was walking back to my dorm through the rain, I started to think about how long 375 years is (that’s almost six times older than the NBA). Read More »
Watching Shawn Kemp in the 1998 NBA Playoffs was like seeing a ghost. Over the course of that season, his first in Cleveland after being shipped out of Seattle, Kemp’s star dimmed considerably. Between his production suffering, his weight gains and Cleveland becoming the J. Cole of NBA teams, slightly boring and monotone, he went from being one of the league’s biggest stars to one of the league’s biggest stars. Whereas he was once playing on NBC every week, Kemp was stuck in a city whose basketball team had one major problem: nobody cared about them. Read More »
When Nate Robinson and filmmaker T.J. Regan told us that State Of Nate was going to let us in on Robinson’s life, they meant it. In the third episode, Nate takes you inside the Seattle Seahawks’ training facility and shares his past football experiences.
For the November issue of Esquire, Scott Raab sat down with Dwight Howard during Fashion Week to talk about the lockout, fatherhood and being a brand. But the most salient topics the four-time All-NBA First Team member discussed was his impending free agency in Orlando and his problems with Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy. Let’s just say Magic fans have a lot more to worry about than just the lockout. Read More »
