If you’ve been watching NBA TV at all this summer – and I’m sure you have if you’re like me – you must’ve noticed how often they play Game 3 from the 1994 first round series between Phoenix and Golden State. I’ve seen parts of that game probably four or five times. It was Chris Webber’s first taste of the postseason and one of the final bites in the prime of Charles Barkley’s career. C-Webb seemed at times, for all of his Fab Five-ness, a respectful young kid. But he crossed the line with his infamous regular season dunk over the reigning MVP. You know the one: catch it on the break, flick it around the back for no reason other than because he can, and then shove the ball down Barkley’s throat after stepping off his Flight No. 4. LeBron James just can’t win can he? People get so offended over a couple of tweets that it’s almost kinda sad. We can’t even tell you the number of people who hit us up after this “story” broke. Plus, like 90 percent of them were ready to crucify LeBron. He was probably messing around about Steve Nash and Jamal Crawford. But one way or another, the Heat will almost assuredly improve their depth at some point over the next year or so. If Nash were to come ring chasing in Miami, would you care? Ring chasers get no love from the public, but if that happened, we could see people twisting the story to let Nash slip by without criticism … Read More »
I’m staring at an ad in a magazine right now. It’s a two-page spread, a perhaps two second clip of a man approaching a basket and then dunking. It’s broken down so you see five of him all at once. There’s the dribble, the gather and finally he’s in the air, elbows at the rim, sneakers exposed. Oh yeah, at the bottom is a logo. All caps. A sort-of backwards Nike sign crowning the top. AND 1. The date on the front of the magazine, which is stuffed into a corner, whimpering beside a close-up of a frighteningly angry Mark McGwire, is 5.17.99. Back when AND 1 was rollin. Back when they packed the house. Back when… Larry Hughes was a pitchman? Read More »
For any of you that were of age and collecting, the ’90s was an amazing decade for sneakers. From the Air Jordan XI to the Reebok Question to the Nike Air Max 90, a ridiculous number of significant kicks hit the market. As you can imagine, it would be difficult to come up with a list of the greatest sneakers of the decade, but our friends over at Complex have done just that. Read More »
Like, for real bro? You trying to make 2K12 literally unplayable? You trying to embrace this villain image huh? You trying to run up into the card game and takes everybody’s money? There’s not a basketball fan in the world who hasn’t heard this at some point over the past 16 months: LeBron just took himself out of the running for best ever! I wish we could go back to when players didn’t team up, and wanted to beat each other! The Heat scored the unthinkable last summer, nabbing James and Chris Bosh while keeping Dwyane Wade to form the NBA’s hype-est trio ever. Now, the King wants Steve Nash and Jamal Crawford to come join him too. Read More »
We already showed you the dunk contest from Duke’s “Countdown to Craziness,” but just like last year and the year before, the guys at Duke got a little help from the school’s improv department to take college hoops to a whole new level. Three words: Bobblehead is back. Also, check out their other spot, “Come Watch Us, We’re Watching You,” after the jump.
Someone brought us up for air. For nearly four months, we’ve been struggling to stay afloat, the water seeping into our mouths, wrinkling our skin and leaving us struggling desperately for air whenever we get the chance. You’d think a lockout would affect the players the most. But no. They were prepared for this (at least it seems everyone outside of Delonte West). The fans weren’t.
Finally, we’ve been given a chance to breath. This week’s meetings left everyone feeling confident, or at least hopeful, that a day might be coming soon where we can kiss this lockout goodbye. Reports say a deal is on the table. It’s just a matter of the two sides negotiating and giving in a little. Read More »
*College basketball is here (unlike the NBA), and this year might be one of the best in recent memory. The powerhouse is back, while the Cinderellas believe. That’s a deadly combination. We know some of y’all have been asking for some previews. We have you covered – the top 16 teams in the nation will be previewed individually in the next few weeks. For now, we’ll kick this off with Oregon – not a top 16 team, but one of our favorites here at Dime.*Read More »
