We all laughed at guys like Wilson Chandler, Kenyon Martin and J.R. Smith when they signed in China and it was ruled they might not be able to get back into the NBA this year. But after yesterday’s proceedings, they actually came out of this thing looking good. They have jobs – and in Smith’s case, an extra suite to store all of his luggage – and are playing basketball. Most of the rest of the NBA is playing in boring lockout games or attempting to redefine men’s fashion (I’m looking at you, Baron Davis.) But one NBA player is still being courted to play. First the great news: Allen Iverson won. A judge dismissed this lawsuit because of a lack of evidence, giving Iverson the victory he desperately wanted. But still this isn’t exactly the type of news headlines Allen Iverson was looking for. Just a few days after word leaked from Iverson’s camp that the former All-Star would ‘relish’ the opportunity to play in Boston – Iverson has actually stated a few times recently that he would love to play anymore in the league – The Detroit Newsobtained a deposition transcript from August that featured an argument between Iverson and Washington, D.C., lawyer Gregory Lattimer where Iverson was holding nothing back. We’ve shown you Baltimore. We showed you the game at Boys & Girls High School earlier today. Now check out Brandon Jennings, Derrick Williams, Kemba Walker, Greivis Vasquez and Under Armour balling out at Lincoln High School during the latest stop on their “Are You From Here?” tour. Lincoln’s alumni team included guys like Lance Stephenson and Sebastian Telfair. And while Jennings (39 points) led all scorers, it wasn’t enough as the Lincoln alumni protected their house with a 101-83 win. Read More »
Not all NBA basketball has stopped. We still have Under Armour’s “Are You From Here?” Tour going on with Kemba Walker, Derrick Williams, Greivis Vasquez and Brandon Jennings going city to city and shutting gyms down. After doing their thing in front of some of the Dime crew in Baltimore, last week the NBA stars traveled by pimped-out bus to Boys & Girls High School in Brooklyn. Playing alumni from the school, the Under Armour team won 100-91 behind 43 points and six threes from Jennings. Read More »
One of things we all around the Dime office miss most about this time of year is the hype. It draws attention, gets people talking and gets people watching. It especially sucks this time because just a year ago, we were consumed by hype. Last season, everyone assumed Kevin Durant would run away with the MVP. He didn’t. Many assumed the Heat would win close to 70 games (or perhaps more). They didn’t. There were only a handful of fans who thought Blake Griffin would do the things he did – terrorize NBA rims across the country and takeover Sportscenter himself. He actually did. Since the owners are running out on the tab, and the players are left bickering amongst themselves over whether to give 15 percent or 20 percent, we now have no hype. Read More »
Next time, maybe Washington State should try covering Kevin Pangos. Just a thought. The freshman went wild last night to tip off college basketball’s 24 straight hours of hoops. He hit nine threes – tying Dan Dickau‘s school record – and scored 33 in Gonzaga’s 89-81 win. Check out all nine bombs below.
In the words of one of our more eloquent Twitter followers: “What the f— am I supposed to watch after the Super Bowl?” The season hasn’t exactly been canceled yet, but with the players rejecting the latest proposal from the owners and threatening to take them to court, the ugliness might’ve just started. David Stern promised that the next time the two sides do negotiate – whenever that’ll be – the owners will be discussing 47 percent BRI and no more, and yet the players still hit the owners with a backhanded slap. So now Stern is calling it a “nuclear winter,” the players are saying it’s a good move and everyone is all wrapped up in self-destruction. Read More »
So I’m hearing we might not be having NBA ball this winter? Right now I’m okay with it. I have an assortment of things to keep me occupied outside of the actual job: HBOGO, college hoops, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, NBA 2K12, playing actual basketball, eating, breathing and all the rest. But at some point, it’ll hit me. There’s a good chance we’ll miss Dallas’ title defense, one of Tim Duncan and Steve Nash‘s final years and even those dope new Wizards uniforms. So if the NBA is stepping away from the game, then NBA TV better step theres up because there are only so many nights I can go without this. Read More »
If you were keeping tabs on the summer hoops circuit, you probably noticed that a bunch of guys were wearing the Nike Zoom Hyperfuse 2011. With that said, check out what Nike Basketball put together for Russell Westbrook this season. Maybe it’s the Thunder colorway, or maybe it’s his signature logo detailed on the tongue, but either way I like it. Check ‘em out: Read More »
