Orlando Forgot How To Play Basketball; Tim Duncan Never Forgets How To Play Ball

Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce, Dime #5

Who stole Orlando’s offense? With the Celtics reeling from injuries and actually giving legit minutes to people like Sasha Pavlovic and E’Twaun Moore, the Magic could’ve stepped on their necks. Instead, they folded like a bad hand, scoring only 56 for the game and leaving Boston with a 31-point L on their foreheads. 56 points sounds awful. But 20 second half points and 24 percent shooting for the game sounds even worse. Dwight Howard had 18 and 14, but didn’t even make a shot in the second half while Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass dropped 19 to lead all scorers … Avery Bradley might not be a player yet, but he’s getting there. The guard forced Zombie Jameer to turn it over three times in the back-court in the third quarter alone, and the Celtic announcers started calling him a weapon on defense and comparing him to when Rajon Rondo first came into the league: a non-scoring difference-maker. Eventually, Tommy settled on “Scoring is superfluous.” Oh, you mean the way they keep track of who wins and loses? We were with you all the way, Tommy, until that … Funny moment at the start of the third quarter. Dwight went one-on-one against KG in the post, and went across to his right for his jump hook. Mike Gorman immediately asked Tommy, “Can you call that a jump hook?” and was honestly perturbed about what exactly it was. Score one for the “Dwight Howard has no offensive game whatsoever” crowd … Just a few possessions later, Dwight Howard and Jermaine O’Neal got into it. They did a whole lot of talking, a whole lot of posturing and the announcers were doing a whole lot of overreacting. Then the refs had to go back to instant replay to check on who put their finger in someone else’s face first. We love the new NBA … Make that seven wins in a row for Memphis, using a 28-7 fourth quarter run to come from 20 down to beat Golden State 91-90. The run culminated in a one-footed fadeaway from Rudy Gay (who scored 23 while looking like he was back in high school with the short hair and headband) to put Memphis up three with under 30 seconds left … Best jump ball of the season: Marc Gasol versus Nate Robinson. It took forever, and Robinson was jumping prematurely so hard that Steph Curry had to hide his face, cracking up on the bench. Curry (18 points) definitely wasn’t all the way back. On one second quarter possession, he shot an air ball on a layup, got it back, and then shot another wind-raiser from deep … Portland ran away from the Kings, behind big nights from Jamal Crawford (26 points) and Gerald Wallace (20 points), continuing their trend of looking like Nia Long one night and Maggie Gyllenhaal the next … According to the announcers, J.J. Hickson hasn’t found his role yet in Sacramento “because the guards are always shooting it.” Then a few minutes later, they said after Jimmer made a three: “If they can ever pass the ball enough to get it to Jimmer, he can score.” We love it when announcers get it right … Speaking of Jimmer, part of the reason why Crawford went off was because the Kings kept trying to let the man (as well as Isaiah Thomas) check Crawford … … Keep reading to hear about Tim Duncan’s best game of the season …

I’ve been guilty of some non-basketball talk, but lately, god damn…it’s insanity. I think everyone here knows who contributes good content and adds value to the Dime reading experience, and who doesn’t. Too bad there wasn’t a minor way to regulate it when someone gets out of hand with the bullshit. A little bit of bullshit, and the lack of moderating people’s input is great, but when it gets too extreme, it’s fucking annoying.

I’m not saying he isn’t a homer. Of course he’s a homer. He won a ring with us. But he’s more fun to listen to than most of the other broadcasters. Some of the other crews make me feel like I’m listening to that clear eyes guy. Bueller… Bueller…

HAHAHAHAHA! That illustration is pretty much dead on.

Here’s another way to look at it…. who would you rather fight? LL Cool J?? Or the 90s Bushwick Bill from Geto Boys?

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want any piece of the 90s Bushwick Bill… I don’t care if he’s a one-eyed midget. LL is in great shape but I don’t think he ever wants to throwdown. The only thing I’d have to worry about with LL is accidentally getting licked when he’s trying to moisten his lips. Bushwick might climb my body and start gnawing at my face.

I walked into 7-11 late last night to grab a 3pack of Kobes(24oz) with my old school timberwolves KG jersey on. Some guy inside tells his homie ” this guy has a fucking garnett jersey on!” i live in LA so im guessing he was a fellow laker fan calling me out. Then his friend goes ” yah but its a Twolves jersey not celtics”, and that diffused the situation. So now im kinda pissed cause i have a CP3 hornets jersey that i may not be able to wear around cause i dont want anyone to think im a clipper fan.

I don’t think I’d be worried about JO or Dwight in a fight, but JO is probably toughest guy on celts. He has at least shown he can execure a flying dragon punch. He ain’t likea Ben Wallace though, that guy would be brutal to fight.

people say jordan is WAY better than kobe…but kobe still has 5 rings.

also, way to go encouraging fake posts. it seems like all the “let’s keep the comment section good and pure” is all bullshit, when people are praising fake posts. contradictions, hypocrites and bullshit prevail with thinking like the one uncheckedagression displayed in his comment.

i find it amazing that only one person called out fake beib (CELTSFAN) while the rest of you just say ” i think he’s pretty funny, or he’s way better, or laugh at it”

so your anxieties are amusing at best. you guys are not real. who is real here? we are all names. now control is complaining ???? wow. but why does it matter? people like unchekedagression will praise fakers all day.

so all you saying “i’ll come back tomorow, does nothing, all that does is allows the faker to have more fun.

but one thing the faker doesn’t realize is i really don’t care about the fake posts myself. it really is you guys that do. i see them, but i still write my opinions. it’s not like the faker is changing my real posts. he is just ADDING separate fake ones. so as long as the don’t interfere with my real ones, he can have a ball. it’s you guys who complain about it that are acting like hyporcites. go on and tell the fake one he is great. i don’t care. lol

  • First & Foremost

    JO vs. Dwight
I’d like to believe Dwight could fight if he ever had to. The problem is that he is a docile big man who has a marketing image of being funny and goofy all the time. Casual fans would eventually forget about the scrum but Dwight would then have to go through the hassle of repairing that image.

Dwight made the smarter decision by not letting it escalate. Ever since the Heat decided to play the villain role, Wade hasn’t done any T-mobile commercials. All Lebron does is lurk in the shadows of his commercials, if he is even seen at all. Ivan Johnson has yet to do an NBA Cares commercial. Players are well aware of their off court images which basically handcuffs them in on court fights.

  • UncheckedAggression

    Awesome.

I have never praised a faker. I simply said the fake Beib was better than the real one. Considering the remarkably low opinion I have of the real one…

I like the Warriors (mainly because of their jerseys) and hate Memphis, but even I had to repect Memphis for not quitting and killing them in the 4th on the road. That was really impressive without Randolph.

Gay’s free throw shooting would concern me come playoff time though if I was a fan of their’s.

Anybody else think Klay Thompson’s going to be a good player? I’ve only seen two games of his and he looked good in both of them.

  • control

    Mt. Pleasant

If Dwight hasn’t been in a fight, it’s probably because I think he went to a very nice, high end christian school in a good area. Then he was surrounded by his entourage 24/7, and there ain’t no way anyone is gettin close enough to scrape.

I bet pretty much any player who came up as a very high end prospect, like LeBron, Kobe, Dwight, etc had such a sheltered lifestyle that they’ve never been in a real fight. Just look how Kobe handled himself with Chris Childs, haha. Or how Melo handled himself with anyone, the punch and run strategy would get you killed in any real situation. 90% of these guys would piss their pants if a 6’0, 200lb average Joe squared up to them and they didn’t have their entourage with em.

Size isn’t a good way to not get in fights, I had A LOT of people pick fights with me after a few drinks because of my size. They felt the need to be all alphamale and shit, trying to show off in front of friends/women…then they get their asses beat. Size isn’t all there is to fighting either, but a tiny bit of skill goes a long when when you’ve got size, haha.

Instead of spinning conspiracy theories about Stern and the Chris Paul trade, how about just looking at it like Stern is another one of the several NBA team owners who sometimes make bad decisions?

Let’s say the Magic GM (Otis Smith) had a deal set up with the Lakers involving Dwight Howard, Pau, Odom, etc. He and Kupchak agree, everything’s cool. Then Smith runs it by the Magic owner (Rich DeVos?), who vetoes it for whatever reason. Maybe DeVos doesn’t want to pay Odom/Gasol, maybe he doesn’t wanna give up Dwight, maybe he just thinks it’s a bad trade and thinks Orlando can get more. Then a few days later, Smith arranges another deal with the Clippers where Dwight goes to L.A., and the Magic get Eric Gordon and some pieces.

Now if DeVos approves the Dwight/Gordon trade, does it mean he had some evil plan to “screw” the Lakers? Probably not. He probably just thought the Gordon deal was better than the Gasol/Odom deal. He wouldn’t be the first owner/executive to make a bad call, right?

NBA GMs agree to trades all the time that we never hear about because an owner vetoed it. After all, it’s their money. The only reason the CP3 thing became a big deal is that (1) it was publicly announced first, and (2) the owner in question happens to be the NBA itself.

I know it’s the most optimistic view possible, but it is at least POSSIBLE that Stern simply didn’t like the Odom/Gasol deal for the Hornets and was more intrigued by the Gordon deal. It’s POSSIBLE that he wasn’t just out to screw the Lakers and Rocket. And as the de facto OWNER of the Hornets, he has the power to veto and approve trades. I can’t think of one GM who gets to operate freely.

    austin,

gm’s are the guys who usually run the show with orchestrating trades. dell demps, the gm and their coach were upset when everything fell through. they had spent a lot of time on the deal and they thought it a great move for the team.

stern’s original reasoning for stopping the first trade was because of something along the lines of “we need paul here to have the franchise look palatable for a sale”. well you think they’re any better off now? i’m not saying they can’t sell, but i am saying, it was a pretty quick trigger after the fact. now, they are left with no franchise player, but his reasoning early on was to have the team look attractive. sketchy.

what’s even more sketchy is this. stern made it 100% clear to dell demps and the rest of the front office that they had complete and utter control over basketball decisions. Stern was just a fill-in owner. he knew deep down inside that his involvement with a team was toeing the line of “conflict of interest”. it was to the point david stern let the hornets know those with authority had clearance to talk to whomever inquired about paul and demps had absolute autonomy to trade paul AS THEY SAW FIT.

this wasn’t just an ordinary nixed deal. the ramifications were immense. gm’s who spents yrs working on it felt their time was wasted. it lead to the lakers losing a 6th man of the year for nothing. the players involved felt betrayed. but looking at the team that got paul, you can see the affects of the deal business-wise. shirts, more notoriety and a revived franchise that is not a joke anymore. the lakers were going to be fine. the clippers needed a jolt. and stern made sure another profitable city wasn’t going to waste especially after a long lockout.

stern didn’t even issue a statement right after the fact. he scheduled a statement. most likely to script his fabricated reasoning. wouldn’t a coach know what’s best for his team. why does stern get to decide what is good? he is a lawyer/businessman/commissioner. how does he know what is best for that basketball team outside of MONEY?

i hear all your points austin about the owner having the final say, but consider this. 1, the deal had been worked on way before the season even started, and way before the lockout was even in place. 2, like i mentioned, the gm was given the FREEDOM to trade paul as he and his coach wanted. third, (and this is the most bogus thing stern can’t defend) he provided updates frequently on trade talks to two officials: stu jackson (nba’s vice president) and joel litvin (president of league operations). 4th, those two were keeping stern informed on the entire process the whole time. WHY DIDN’T STERN STOP THE DEAL THEN?

i know why. every person who looks deeper in the deal knows why. the lockout, angry owners and fans who were going to question the point of the lockout. this was not a basketball related move. it was a business move. stern has no defense. all he has is egg on his face and this nixed deal is not like every other cancelled trade because this will probably be the only one remembered throughout all time. ask yourself, everytime you see cp3 play, don’t you tell yourself, wow, he was almost a laker?

sorry i wrote so much, but i wrote fact. i believe stern 5% but 95% of what he explained is shit of bull.

  • LakeShow84

    Fuck that AB lol

I feel the optimistic view but Stern dont like the Lakers..

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

@Beiber — You’re right on a lot of points, but way off on some.

I’m sure Stern wouldn’t have nixed the Paul/Lakers trade if other owners hadn’t complained. But that’s what happens when one team has 30 owners who also own other NBA teams, represented by a commissioner who technically works for those owners. Maybe it’s not right, but remember, the Hornets as a franchise put themselves in that position by not producing a profitable/marketable product. They ran their own business into the ground so badly that Stern and the NBA had to save them, so now is not the time to complain when the hand that feeds you decides to get stingy, ya know?

Is Stern the best qualified to make basketball decisions? Probably not. But neither is Dan Gilbert, or Robert Sarver, or every other owner who’s not Michael Jordan. That doesn’t matter; the owners get to veto or sign off on deals because IT’S THEIR TEAM AND THEIR MONEY. You might not be the best person to make decisions on your stocks and investments, but since it’s your money, your stock broker has to listen to what you want them to do.

I get why the players, GMs and fans involved in the Hornets/Lakers/Rockets situation were upset, but after a while it’s like, get over it. GMs complaining about how many hours/weeks they wasted on the trade; Odom and Gasol moping because they almost got traded; CP3 acting like he wanted to sue somebody because he didn’t get traded; people asking, “How will the Rockets break this to Scola and K-Mart?”; Lakers fans complaining about how they HAD to trade Odom, etc.

Seriously? This is a business, which EVERY NBA player knows and will roll out as their reasoning if you asked them why they signed with Team X over Team Y, etc. I like Odom even more as a person than as a player (which isn’t a knock on his game at all), but he’s been traded before and he’ll probably be traded again. Get over it. That’s the life you chose by enterting the NBA.

I love CP3′s game, but why was he acting like it was his right to be traded when he was still under contract in New Orleans? If you want the flexibility to go wherever you want, stick to signing 1-year deals.

The Lakers didn’t HAVE to trade Odom because he was sad, they chose to trade him rather than let him work through his hurt feelings (or to clear room for Dwight, whichever).

As for your statement about the Clippers needing a jolt, I’m not sure about that. People were running the “Are the Clippers going to be better than the Lakers?” headlines LAST year when Blake Griffin blew up. Having CP3 certainly makes them better, faster, but that was already a franchise on the rise. If Stern were really trying to give a franchise a jolt, he would’ve had Demps trade CP3 to the Cavs or Bobcats, some team like that.

And to answer your question, no, I don’t watch CP3 and think about him being a Laker. Just like I don’t think about how he could’ve been a Hawk, or a Buck, or a Jazzman (2005 Draft).

  • beiber newz

    austin,

your post was more in response to the sentiment aspect of my attack on stern. but i hope that means you see how stern actually did screw the franchises on the court. you said you didn’t know any gm who had freedom to conduct moves as pleased and that stern had the final word. well, for those who knew that situation closely understand that stern in fact handed complete freedom to dell demps, allowed team officials to pull the trigger on any deal they saw fit and he was actually being briefed on every advancement in the deal. i hope we are on the same page in terms of stern knowing what was going on, being cool with what was going on and flip flopping after public outcry. so if his basketball reasoning was accurate, he would have killed the deal from day one, instead of watching his workers toil day and night over something he felt wasn’t the greatest “basketball decison” .

i see you touched on, like i said, the sentiments of my argument which were how it affected the players involved, gm’s wasting their time and the ramifications of the trade falling through. you are correct that that doesn’t matter, because it is the life they signed up for. the nba is a business. i get that, i studied business. that is not what my problem was. it was the fact stern lied to the people. i wanted to focus more so on the issues of why stern felt the original trade wasn’t suitable. too many flaws in his explanations and sources close to that situation are even questioning his reasoning especially after dell demps was informing stern the entire time.

yes the hornets ran themselves into the ground, but it is more so the previous owner’s fault more than it is the gm’s fault. also, the coach can’t control the players who gets brought in, he can only control who gets put on the court. monty williams liked that deal. he told demps, the guy who supposedly was given 100% control of trading paul, to bring in scola, odom etc. he wasn’t biting the hand that fed him because he was never fed. he just did his job. stern is like the step dad who comes in the family and tries to regulate with an iron fist. it’s his job to do so, but if you give someone authority, don’t undermine it at the finish line because you have 29 other owners ready to come for your head.

were the other owners going to sell their franchises if stern let paul go to the lakers? were the other 29 owners going to quit or ask for sterns resignation? i don’t think so, mainly because it wasn’t a trade that was by any means lopsided. yes the lakers were getting a franchise player, but they were giving up one themselves in a rare good big man and an amazing 6th man. just as people could say it was a bad deal, just as many people can look at it and say it was a great deal for all parties.

cp3 wasn’t acting like it was his right to be traded prior to being traded. it was only after the fact that he was supposedly traded that paul starting bitching about lawsuits, and i don’t blame him. he was doing what any player can do and demand a trade, even if that is wrong, he wasn’t making it his right at that point. he just let his team know he wanted out. if a kid was told he would go to the zoo tommorow by his dad, he’d be excited. but when saturday arrives and his dad just tells him “kiddo, we’ll go next week” , you can’t blame the kid for throwing a fit and acting like it is his right to go because he was told he would be going. it would only be wrong for that kid to complain if he wasn’t told he was going at all. i’m not saying the kid is right for complaining, but i can understand why he would be.

also, like is said, the clippers were on the rise before, but with the way the league was headed with superstars teaming up, sending a premiere player in paul to play with blake would get the attention of those who don’t even pay attention to bball. blake griffin was a good ticket, but i know people who watched their first clippers game because of all the controversy and the star power they now had. an organization in LA needs to be at the peak of notoriety. blake griffin and crew would not get it done. cpe and blake griffin would. espn runs interviews with both cp3 and blake because now they have two possible hall of famers. sending paul to the cavs would just bury a great player on a bad team.

i bet if monta ellis played point guard for the heat he’d be the next big star. because he plays on a subpar team, no one really respects him. don;t send a great talent to a bad team because no one respects stats of a good player on a bad team. that would be bad business if stern did that. the safe thing to do would be to send paul to a profitable team that hasn’t been the best of the best. and the clippers fit the bill. plus they had the pieces to do it as stern claims.

and your final point, yes you probably don’t look at paul and wonder he could have been a hawk or whatever, because he was never associated with those franchises. but that’s just you. some people look at durant and say he could have been a trailblazer though. some people even look at jordan and say he could have been a blazer. but the fact that paul was technically a laker for all about an hour, some if not many look at paul and see that failed trade.

  • UncheckedAggression

Although my UPS guy says Caron Butler lives right down the street. I might have to stalk his ass. Maybe Blake will come over and I can squeal and have him sign my titty.

Austin – The problem is that the owner gives his yay or nay on the trades BEFORE they are submitted to the league. I still think the Lakers trade was better for the Hornets, but I understand from a money/sell the team standpoint why it wasn’t made.

so the cavs-heat game did turn out to be a good game. lbj with the win.

i bet if the magic still had gortat on the roster, trading dwight would be much easier. gortat is balling. he is a good center. starting caliber too. damn.

andrea bargnani would be an allstar if he was at least just an average rebounder at his position. dude can ball, but damn, his subpar rebounding makes it hard to give him serious consideration. but he a dope player this year.
