Boston Adds An All-Star, Loses A Game; Linsanity & Carmelo Get On The Same Page

Russell Westbrook

For about two hours yesterday, the Boston Celtics had us double-checking our calendars and second-guessing our travel plans, because they made it look like All-Star Weekend had started on a Wednesday. The C’s played like they were already on vacation in Oklahoma City (which should have been their first hint that it wasn’t a vacation), falling behind big early and never catching up to the Thunder … Russell Westbrook (31 pts) used his arsenal of drives and mid-range pull-ups to help put OKC ahead by 14 going into the fourth quarter before the Celtics finally woke up. Paul Pierce (23 pts, 8 asts) and Ray Allen (21 pts, 7 asts) got on a roll, and a pair of techs by Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka helped, but the real key for the Celtics was remembering how to play defense. Avery Bradley was a pure pest on the perimeter – a couple of times he found himself on an island against Kevin Durant and forced KD to give the ball up. (By the way, LeBron would have gotten KILLED by his critics if he had a 6-2 guy in a post-up situation didn’t capitalize, and LBJ is shorter than Durant) … Boston cut the lead down to six with 3:30 remaining, but some backbreaking turnovers and clutch shots by Durant (28 pts, 9-22 FG) ultimately ended comeback bid … Before the game, Rajon Rondo – still sitting out his league suspension – was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team to replaced injured Joe Johnson. Rondo has been nice this year, averaging 14.8 points and 9.5 dimes, but seriously, what does Josh Smith have to do to get his first All-Star nod? … Kobe Bryant learned a long time ago that he can’t please everybody, and last night was a classic example. In a game where he did everything that every armchair Lakers coach wants him to do – i.e., giving the ball up to Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum – Kobe still put himself in position to get a lot of flak because he bricked some crucial free throws in the final seconds that allowed the Mavericks to almost steal a win … With 1:30 to go, L.A. had a three-point lead and the ball. That’s the time when everybody expects Kobe to block out the rest of the world and go for his, but he tossed some pretty lobs to Gasol and Bynum on back-to-back possessions to give the Lakers a sizable cushion. But just when the Mavs fans were filing out of the arena and the game seemed over, L.A. went cold at the free-throw line. Kobe, Matt Barnes and Gasol combined to miss six freebies in a row, and suddenly the Mavs were only down two with 27 seconds left. (Can’t really blame Gasol for his misses, though, since he’d just gotten destroyed by an MMA-style forearm to the neck from Brendan Haywood.) But thanks to a huge offensive board by Barnes and an airball by Jason Terry, the Lakers hung on for the win. And when it was over, all Lisa Salters could ask Kobe about were those free throws … The first half was kind of surreal, as Vince Carter dropped 18 points on an array of deep jumpers and Vin-tage moves to the cup. (What’s that? Corny NBA puns are the sole property of Jeremy Lin? Sorry.) But VC only scored two points after halftime … The highlight of the night, though, happened in the third quarter. Kobe (15 pts, 4-15 FG, 7 TO) had Jason Kidd in his hip pocket at the top of the key, spun left and took a football hit from Haywood before throwing in a no-look, over-the-shoulder banker … There’s something hilariously ironic about Mike Breen praising Jason Kidd for being one of the smartest, most crafty players of all time, and having his soliloquy interrupted by Metta World Peace barreling through the lane like a bull in a red carpet outlet shop … T.O. was at the game. And he got more playing time than Luke WaltonKeep reading to hear how the Knicks worked things out …

Larry: Who taught you that post game?
    Lebron: Hakeem…
    Larry: WHO??
    Lebron HAKEEM!!
Larry: Back when I played, his name was Akeem.
Lebron: Back when you played I wasn’t born yet.
Larry: Back when I played we didn’t need those pampers you guys are wearing for armor.
Lebron: Back when you played, pampers were longer than your shorts.
    *pause*
*Larry punches Lebron straight in his face*
    *Lebron, stunned*
    *Larry kicks Lebron’s ass*

Larry: Don’t. you EVER. talk about my shorts.

Larry: Back when I played that’s how we dealt with people we don’t like. Today, you faggots all love eachother.
Now go play house with the rest of those bitches… and tell them you got your ass whoop by a white guy with no lips… they’ll know who you’re talking about.

Talk about Lin all you want, but the story this year if not for Lin would be Isaiah Thomas (60th pick!) tearing up the league over the last two weeks. Even against Miami.

I realize that Bird wouldn’t win 100% of the time. I’m just having fun clowning on dude. Is it cool to give props to my own post? I feel like i dropped some gold in my last comment.

“Back when you played, pampers were longer than your shorts.”
^ I’m still laughing with that one. Lol!

    JAY

Yeah, give yourself props all you want. You could make 30 straight posts about how good you are and you still wouldn’t even be as bad as some person here, haha.

It would be funny to listen to Larry talk some shit. I think LeBron would win if he brought ear plugs, haha. If the game were 100% mental, then Stephan Hawking would be breaking shit down hard core! Just imagine Stephan Hawking talking some shit in his computer voice “I can’t use my arms, and I am still more clutch then you at the line!”.

I hate the one on one argument. For many of the reasons you listed.
I once read a story about Chris Jackson (Abdul-Rauf later) and Michael Jordan at a highschool camp. They explained that anyone in the NBA can beat another NBA player one on one. This was after they both played eachother. the skinny 6’1 Jackson vs the 6’6 200+lb Jordan.

Point being, 1 on 1 don’t mean shyt. but guys were throwing it out there like Bron would run all over Bird in a one on one because he is athletic.

Also you pointed out that Bron is physically better. Bird was 6’9 and about 230-240 himself. Add that to Lebron no knowing how to use his size, not having a post game, and Bird being a super smart defender, and that pretty much takes away his advantages.
Would Lebron win some games…sure. If he catches a rhythm on his jumper he is hard to guard.
Will Bird win the majority of the time? You better believe it. Because he won’t spend nearly as much energy to score.

And where are you getting this Lebron has handles shyt? I look at basketball highlights all the time and watch a ton of games. Very rarely do i ever see Lebron make a crossover, behind the back, or Spin move.

Guys like Kobe, Lamar Odom, Jamal Crawford, Joe Johnson, Kevin Durant, Shaun Livingston, Caron Butler, Carmelo Anthony, T-Mac, Iman Shumpert, Andre Igudola, Manu Ginobli, and Hedo Turkoglu (I’ll stop there) are all 6’5 and above guys who can really handle the rock and actually have dribble moves that will f^ck you up.

Lebron can’t do what they can do (ballhandling wise). He’s a big stiff when it comes to making moves. But he is so damn strong and big, he just puts his head down an charges down the lane. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t mistake that shyt for ballhandling. That just means he’s faster and quicker than the guys guarding him….and of course the refs will call a foul on anyone attempting to guard him.

Seriously, I’m amazed that you (control) of all people think Lebron has a handle.

I’m on my way out, so I can’t go in depth about explanation, but I’ve seen 100s of LeBron’s games and I RARELY see the guy lose the ball because of his dribbling. The guy gets double and triple teams and still retains control of the ball. He’s not on like Steve Nash’s level as far as keeping his dribble, and he’s not even as good as like Tyreke Evans (who might be best 6’6+ dribbler in the league). The guy knows how to use his body to shield ball from defender, and he knows how to use his dribble to get to the rim. Look at how often LeBron drives, and doesn’t get stripped…I’m not saying he needs to do AND1 shit or anything, but he’s got more than enough handle to ensure he can get to the rim on anyone without losing the ball.

Ooooh ok i see what your saying. I’ll mostly agree with that.

Hey did anyone notice Jamie Lee Curtis as the new Starting PG with the Phx Suns?? LOL!

  • http://ufl.edu Big Freeze

I think this game could be a playoff preview. Both teams are healthy right now, and it should be a close one. I have more confidence in Carmelo/Lin closing the game than Lebron and co.

    Knicks win 90-87.

  • K Dizzle

    LMAO @ post #49.
    That shit is gold!

  • http://www.livingcheapla.com hakasan

i don’t think the knicks, who were on a 2-13 run prior to lin, can be called good at defense… obvious not good enough to be 9 games under 500… in fact, i don’t think any sub 500 team can be called good at anything… because obviously they are not good enough to win more than half the time…

on harold miner and how tweener 2 guards weren’t ‘in fashion’ not sure what you mean by tweener 2 guards, but there was a certain #23 on the bulls who used to be able to drive at will, hit shots from anywhere on the floor, handled the ball most of the times, and dunked like a maniac… i believe most people growing up watching #23 wanted to be able to play like him…

on larry legend trading teams with lebron… i don’t see any of those players go on to be the major factor in any other championship teams… can you imagine if larry and magic pulled a lebron and joined… ewing in ny or hakeem in houston… detroit might have never won those 2 championships… MJ might only have 4 or 5 rings..

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

    on the knicks defense…

    improved, respectable, forces turnovers

on D , they are not the kings, or the wizards…

the knicks can at least hold teams to their avg’s or bellow, not every night, but they can play d.

  • Big Island

The Knicks D started when their worst defenders went down (Amare and Melo) and everyone played. You can hide a bad guy on offense, but you can’t hide a lazy defender. Melo is playing a little bit of D so the team as a whole is better.

Larry Bird would beat Lebron for all of the reasons people are writing above. It’s also for the same reason JJ Barrea would beat me. I am bigger, stronger, I can post him up, I’m not as quick, but should be able to handle the ball ok, and I have a decent shot from outside. He would beat the shit out of me because I am not as good as he is. Lebron is physically better than everyone ever. EVER. In the history of the NBA, nobody has ever done, or has been able to do, what he can PHYSICALLY. He just isn’t as good as some players. That is why Bird, in my opinion (Beib, that was for you) would beat Lebron. Lebron isn’t as good of a basketball player.

  • JBaller

They should add a one on one tourney to all star weekend!

  • JBaller

Looks like NYK is hanging around. It also looks like the Heat are out to shut Lin down. That is part of their problem, they are more concerned with Lin for stealing their thunder than with the Knicks as a whole. Grown ass men who are paid to play for a living should be concerned with wins only and not headlines and sidestories. I’ve been loving Linsanity, but what I really want is to see my team, NYK, with more wins than loses.

  • K Dizzle

@ JBaller – So DWill cooks Lin and the Knicks lose n you think it’s bad strategy to shut him down?

  • JBaller

MIA was clearly the better team, but I think NY will continue to improve and maybe they’ll meet again in the second round of the playoffs. The only team that can give MIA any run for their money right now is OKC. It’s a pretty safe prediction that we’ll see a MIA/OKC finals. I hope MIA is M.I.A. in the finals like they were last year and Durant holds that trophy up high!

I’m teaching a class at the college right now; my students are all working on computers so I took the opportunity to follow the game. I’m stealing money like Eddy Curry right now!

.500+ stop acting so elusive! you are not mewtwo!

  • JBaller

    Yo Diz,

I think shutting Lin down is a good game plan. I just hate MIA and am talking shit about them. I am so biased that I can find childishness in anything they do. But hey, who am I to judge.

FUKC MIAMI, Pat the Rat, LeBrick, RuPaul, and Wade (I couldn’t come up with anything for his name)! I actually liked Wade before the superfriends got together, but now he can go suck a cockk with the rest of them!

    There has to be something…

  • JBaller

Lol Big I, That’s one glossy-lipped bitch! He good though.

  • JBaller

NYK is where me and Biebs agree. I am with him, ready to see the Knicks get above .500 and stay there, but it aint gonna happen with Lin shooting 1 for 11 with as many turn overs as points.

The real story is the continuation of LBJ vs. Melo. I read on ESPN that the ten year anniversary of their epic first prep school game is coming up. Melo has the better overall record in their meetings, but LBJ puts up better stats each time. It’s cool that they go so hard at each other when they meet. I still have as many chips as both of them combined (more if you count potato, tortilla and corn chips)!

  • http://www.bettlejuiceXs3.com Chicagorilla

    @JBaller

I didn’t watch the game (had a High school game to go to) but my boy called me and said Lebron wouldn’t guard Melo but Melo was checking Lebron (which is why Melo was in foul trouble). Is that the way it went?

I’m watching this OKC/LAL game. Kobe is being guarded by Harden. At first i thought HArden was play great D, but instead it looks like Kobe is helping him look good because he’s shooting too many jumpers. The 2nd half can change around quickly if Kobe starts hitting. OKC should’ve pulled away already, could be close in the 2nd half.

Also I hate Chris Webber as an announcer.

  • K Dizzle

@ JBaller – I hate the Heat too so yeah, hate on.

  • control

    Chicagorilla

LeBron spent most of the first half shutting down guards. He also spent some time guarding Tyson at center, then switched to JR Smith at SG, then ended up on Melo and pretty much shut him down. LeBron’s defense was INSANELY good, not sure why people get on him, how many guys can guard every position for at least 3 minutes in one game? 5 steals and 2 blocks, with none of them coming from huge gambles that cost his team…it was an impressive defensive performance. LeBron also had the ball handling duties for about 80% of the possessions, and I don’t think any of his turn overs were from dribbling :P

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

appreciate da sympathy island..but i don’t need it, it’s not like the knicks got eliminated from anything.

fuck, both la and ny lost tonite. well, hopefully this loss for the lakers jumpstarts some fucking movements. jim buss get on your job. i don’t even care if u get michael beasley to start at the 3. do something.

  • http://www.bettlejuiceXs3.com Chicagorilla

    @Control

    Lol@the last shot.

I’ve always said that if Lebron studies how to play defense and commits himself to it every game, he could be the greatest defensive presence basketball has seen since Pippen and Jordan in their Prime. The reason being, because he would be able to guard 1-4 effectively all game and could even switch to some undersized 5′s (or ones that don’t play offense well like Chandler). In the finals last year I couldn’t wait until Lebron would commit to guarding Dirk and shut him down….it never happened. I think that disappointed me more than anything in the finals.
But the last 3 games I’ve seen Lebron all over the place on defense and actually playing man to man on ball D. If he keeps this up, he could win DPOY.

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

hmmmm i remember pre season phrasing the chances at melo getting mvp in a similar format and i caught hell for it because ppl said even though i said it like that , i was saying he WILL get it. interesting. wonder how someone without beiber in their name will be received for using a similar syntax.

  • JBaller

Wish I could say I watched it, even tho nyk got whooped, but I was in class following it on espn. Melo had 5 fouls by the third, I’d like to think it was cause he was defending lebron as Rilla said. All I got is the highlights of Miami forcing turnovers and dunking. I liked how Norris Cole swung on the rim and landed hard, then popped up like “that didn’t hurt, I meant to do that”. 2 points the hard way.
