Pau Gasol & The Lakers Win A Classic Rivalry; Sacramento Pulls Off A Major Upset

Kobe Bryant (photo. Chris Sembrot)

It’s a misnomer to call Thursday’s picks for the rest of the All-Star squads “reserves” considering their place as some of the world’s best ballers, but we learned who filled out the All-Star rosters last night on TNT. Some experts weren’t thrilled by all the picks, which opens up the annual conversation: Do fans want the big names or should they deserve the best in the moment? A perfect example is LaMarcus Aldridge, who was balling last season in Portland but got cut because he wasn’t a hot name. He got his much-deserved All-Star spot last night. Paul Pierce, Luol Deng and Dirk Nowitzki, though? And no Rondo? … A final thought about the All-Star Game: We’d love to eavsdrop on the Gasol brothers’ phone call today. Hey Pau, sorry I beat you outNike Basketball delivered again and dropped All-Star kicks for Kobe, Durant and LeBron. What do you think of them? … The Truth (18 points, nine rebounds, seven assists) stared down Metta World Peace for a go-ahead three with a minute left, but the Lakers held serve in Boston to kick off Thursday night, 88-87 in overtime. L.A. finally grabs a win on the road, with Kobe pouring in 27. How about that two-night stretch for Doc Rivers? Take the bad with the good, sure, but he must have still been riding high a night after seeing his son, Austin, bring Duke from 10 points back and hit the game-winning, building-quieting three in Chapel Hill. Then he comes back to Beantown for a premier matchup only to see Pau Gasol (25 points, 14 rebounds) and Andrew Bynum (16 points, 17 rebounds) ruin a second Rivers family win. Bynum got a huge tip-in with two minutes left to put L.A. up one, then Pau tipped in a game-tying bucket with less than 10 in regulation. When he blocked Ray Allen to end overtime it was finally over … KG on why he struggled (6-for-23): “I should have took on a more meditative state, done some yoga on the side or something.” … Pretty easy for the Rockets over the Suns, 96-89. But the highlight came before the game was seven points old with Channing Frye’s facial over Samuel Dalembert. Frye (21 points) was the recipient of All-Star reserve Steve Nash’s (14 points, 13 dimes) generosity much of the night. Nash’s All-Star nod puts him in rare company for long-term greatness, joining only Kareem, Jordan and Malone as All-Star selections after turning 38 … Making close to 50 percent on three-pointers will do the trick any night out. Golden State, always one of the league’s most enjoyable teams to watch offensively, was, yeah, offensive (13-for-25 from deep, 52 percent shooting). Steph Curry was the ringleader of it all, going for 36 with seven rebounds and seven dimes to torch the Nuggets. His last three prompted a Mark Jackson-esque shimmy to go with his 36th point. The whole team was stroking it like Bob Ross on a mid-day painting show. At one point after a David Lee jumper from the elbow, the distraught Nuggets’ TV crew dropped this line: “When David Lee’s making jump shots what’s the world coming to?” … And — can we say this with a straight face? — give a round of applause to the GS defense for keeping the Nuggets in check. Denver came in averaging almost 104 points per game, the most in the league, but was almost held to less than 100 for the fifth straight game for the first time since 2006. The final score doesn’t show the control the Warriors had all game, leading by 20 in the fourth … Keep reading to hear about the biggest upset of the night …

You’re so easy beib. Obviously I find it fun to poke at you. You can go ahead and make the obvious joke there, you always do.

I got nothing against you, I never said I hated you. It’s a slow work day, and you’re so easily riled up. It’s fun to get you all worked up. And you’re right, I do like reading your troll posts. You’re like an amusing car wreck.

  • http://www.bettlejuiceXs3.com Chicagorilla

I’m always up for a good debate, but damn every day this dude comes here to kick ish off. limit that to 2-3 days a week and we’re good.

@Chicagorilla — It was Rick Fox and John Salley.

  • http://www.zwani.com/graphics/funny_pictures/images/88funny-pictures128.jpg JAY

AB… Rick Fox, for sure. Lol! That dude loves being in front of the camera.
I can’t think of anyone else, but it’s gotta be another guy who’s played on the Lakers. Salley maybe?? That’s the only other dude I can think of, but I can’t see him judging drag queens. Fox fits the bill though. He seems ‘fabulous’ himself.

  • http://www.zwani.com/graphics/funny_pictures/images/88funny-pictures128.jpg JAY

What the fuck? I swear that ^ wasn’t there when I wrote my post. Lol. That makes me look like this:

*two dudes thinking about how to spend a Friday evening*
Guy A: “I got a great idea. Why don’t we go to a strip bar and get lappies?”
    *immediately after*
JAY: “I know!!! Let’s get some lapdances at the strip bar!”

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

@JAY — Salley seems like he’d be down to do anything once. Especially if free drinks are involved. And Fox is just a camera whore.

  • http://www.zwani.com/graphics/funny_pictures/images/88funny-pictures128.jpg JAY

I can’t believe I was right, but it’s not that difficult. Process of elimination. It HAD to be some LA guy…. no offense, LA guys. And Fox and Salley are high on the list of guest TV appearances.

Reality TV, eh?? (I’m canadian. Leave me alone) I guess we all have our vice. Mine is video games. Three Stacks’ is bustin’ beiber’s balls. Lol. What ever floats your boat.

    @46,

just because a player got a contract extension doesn’t mean he can’t be traded… it is usually harder because the accepting team would have to take on a long term contract, which is not the case with NJ… NJ wants to sign a big name player to a long term contract, but nobody wants it… (thus dwill’s current status)

landing westbrook for NJ shows dwight that they will at least have a ‘all star level’ poing guard for the next 5 years, and might actually entice him to go…

dwill would want to go to okc because he’ll get the top scorer in the game… and not one that requires the ball… KD is perfectly ok running past screens to get a jumper… as opposed to like a lebron or a kobe who wants to create their own shots…

okc wins as well because i don’t think the two of them playing together can reach their full potentials together. it should be pretty obvious that kd is the first option in that offense, and yet you see westbrook wanting the alpha role all the time… together, westbrook would be frustrated that he can’t be #1, durant would be frustrated because he should be #1 but the pg won’t give him the rock… plus, dwill has better range than westbrook…

i think it’s a win for everyone involved.

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

    i feel you 3stacks…pause

  • Three Stacks

    @hakasan

Of course a player can be traded after an extension, but I think the likelihood is very low.

And with the Nets looking to move to Brooklyn, they need a big name. Westbrook is a good player, but I’m not sure if he’s a big name yet. He’s definitely an upper tier athlete, but he’s still in unproven commodity. I’m sure NJ would take him if they know D-Will is gonna bounce outta there, though.

If I’m on a team, as a player/coach/GM/anything, I take Williams over Westbrook 100 out of 100 times.

I honestly think giving Westbrook that extension was a huge mistake. OKC has enough perimeter firepower with Harden and Durant, and if they took all that cash to get a mid-tier pass-first PG (like an Andre Miller or dare I say, Jeremy Lin) along with a big man that has ANY post skill (like Scola? or even Dejuan Blair or Carl Landry, if you wanna go cheaper), they would be a much better TEAM.

Sam Presti make a rare mistake, in my eyes. He probably thought if Westbrook wasn’t gunning for a contract, he wouldn’t have to chase numbers and might settle down the offense. I don’t think that’s gonna happen, and OKC is at their ceiling unless Westbrook starts playing smarter basketball.

YESS !! LAKESHOW i love when people speak with conviction of a prediction! it shows guts! it shows moxie! it shows a willingness to put yourself out in the line of potential ridicule with faith as your shield!

while you did put an “lol” after it, i get the genuine feeling you really tried to express you believe the lakers will present that imaginary brick wall against the lin phenomena.

not too many people speak with conviction like that on this site. really the only conviction i see on this site is fluff stuff like: knicks suck!

i like predictions! and now you’re on the clock lakeshow. i’ll be watching that game rooting for both teams..more so the knicks cuz they need the win more. new york city has been on fire since the superbowl.

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

    3stacks…
maybe the huge contract will have the reverse affect in that westbrook will go out to show that he is worth the contract or maybe show that he deserved franchise money.

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

i once claimed love focuses a lot on his 3 point attempts when someone questioned blake griffin’s all star starting selection over love. the same guy said griff’s stats are inflated. so i claimed to be fair that love’s offensive rebounds may inflate love’s stats respectfully. overall i got call dumb for all the points i made ( i think only cuz my name is beiber) but i thought i made some pretty well thought out points. the one that stuck out to me was when i said love needs to focus on his post game instead of taking close to 5 3s a night as a pf.

now he’s close to being in the 3 point contest…..

yet…i was a dummy that day.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Austin Burton

I don’t think extending Westbrook was a mistake. You have to have multiple stars (however you want to define them) to win in today’s NBA, and if you had a roster like Three Stacks suggested — Dre Miller, Harden, Durant, Scola, Perkins — that’s not gonna win championships unless Harden gets a lot better or Scola gets a lot better.

Westbrook is a star. Like others have said, people get on him for not passing the ball more, but who are these OKC scorers he’s allegedly ignoring? Even when Westbrook does everything by the book, OKC’s entire offense is designed around Durant and Westbrook. So either way he’s gonna take a lot of shots because he is the second-best scorer on a team where the No. 3 guy is significantly behind him.

  • Three Stacks

    @beib

Existence entails a limitless number of possibilities, so of course the “possibility” of the extension having a reverse effect is there. But that’s not saying much, you can take any situation, any scenario and throw a “maybe” into the equation. The beauty of “maybes” is that you can’t disprove them, and one of the reasons people get so frustrated with you is because you throw us one of your “maybes” and treat it like you came up with a cold fusion formula.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Westbrook, he played for the Bruins while I was at UCLA, and I wish him success. But just because he “maybe” might play harder to prove himself doesn’t automatically mean OKC will be more successful. In fact, if he continues to play harder in his current mode, I think he’ll be an even larger detriment than he is now. Going out on the court to “prove” anything besides the fact that you want to win is a recipe for disaster.

  • Three Stacks

    @ Austin

I don’t think OKC are on a championship pace with their current roster either. They are good, of course, and this season’s format is obviously helping them right now. But once the playoffs come around and each possession counts that much more, they don’t have anyone that can get them easy buckets in the half-court. The bigs are sound defensively, and Ibaka may come good over time, but none of them have any posts moves, at all.

You may be right, maybe the combination of Westbrook and Durant is talented enough to overcome the necessity of consistent ball movement, but I feel like their potential is much greater, and that Westbrook could be a legitimate franchise player if he played better team basketball. I don’t deny that he is a star, but his one foray into the postseason ended in controversy, and I don’t think he’s convinced everyone just yet.

  • jdizzle

@JAY that’s why I always make sure I refresh the page before I comment lol.

And it seems as if a certain Laker isn’t all that impressed with (or is just oblivious to) all the Linsanity hype:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPAYzNH4xXY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  • Ace

On Kobe being the most fundamentally sound player:

I don’t get the argument you guys make here – dude takes difficult shots, does not pass etc etc.
I think you are looking at the argument wrong.

Usain Bolt is the fastest runner in the world. Does not mean every time he runs he needs to be the fastest. But, if he wants to he is.

Same thing – Lets say there is a competition in the All-star game around fundamentals – footwork, dribbling, passing from double teams, finding teammates, jump shots, layups, executing fast breaks..who would come out as the all-round fundamentally sound player ?????

Just cause he chooses not to (much to everyone’s frustration) does not mean he is not. The announcing crew notices certain moves he makes and understands that to make it you need to be fundamentally sound and that he is the best at it..

  • JBaller

I don’t know where alf heard that ROndo was going to be traded to Utah, but I have to say that would be the dumbest thing Boston ever did, considering he is their only young baller and the big three are quickly becoming the old three.

I like the suggestion of sending DWill to OKC for Westbrook. You know Deron would sign and extension there, the Nets would get Westbrook for the next four years since he just extended and Westbrook could be the man on the Nets, scoring at will. His assist to turnover ration last night was bad, but those 31 points were just fine.

I’m glad Sacto won, although it’s hard to root for DMC when he is acting like a 7′ baby. That guy needs some counseling or something. Get him to the shrink! Reke was ballin out his mind, I love that guy’s game. I wsa thinking that it’s funny that he is a scoring PG who gets a lot of credit, but Westbrook gets killed for the same thing. I think the difference is that Westbrook has the scoring champion on his team so he should be focused on dong other things than scoring himself to get his team the W. Reke has to score, somebody’s got to score the points on that team.

Knicks/Lakers on ESPN in 40 minutes. It’s going to be my first look at JLin live, too bad Kobe is going murder him. GO KNICKS!

I was thinking about Kobe’s fundamentals as were discussed above. He has mad footwork, kind of like Hakeem did. Hakeem credited his footwork to growing up overseas playing soccer. I am wondering if the same goes for Kobe growing up in Italy; I know he loves soccer.

ALL I DO IS LIN-LIN-LIN!!!!! lol.
This kid has me sitting here like im watching a Rom-Com or a disney movie. This is what basketball is about. A kid who could have easily done anything else in life with a Harvard education, but he works his ass off to barely make an NBA team and now he’s looking like an star in the making.
“I ain’t seen that around here since….since…the King and Duct Johnson. The King and Duct!”–bonus points for anybody who knows where that quote came from lol

By the way, that KNicks vs Lakers game is a Perfect example of Fundamental (Jeremy Lin) vs non-fundamental (Kobe).

  • http://datpiff.com beiber newz

so is it safe to say the new infusion of good pg play will propel the knicks to the playoffs? a few weeks ago that was laughable when i said those words. the real question tho, is if lin is the future. ny had their eyes on deron. maybe a trade is in the works. what would be smarter? getting dwill or hoping lin is the answer, cuz that save a ton more money for the cap.
