Kevin Durant On First Seeing 10-Year-Old Stephen Curry : “I Thought He Was White”

Anthony Davis, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kevin Durant

NEW YORK — During the NBA 2K Uncensored event yesterday, moderator Ernie Johnson asked the four players in attendence, James Harden, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis and NBA 2K15 cover athlete, Kevin Durant, whether they could remember the first time they heard about one of the other players on stage. The story Durant told about the first time he met a 10-year-old Stephen Curry had the players and most of those in attendance holding their sides with laughter.

As part of the promotion leading up to the October 7 release of NBA 2K15, Ernie asked Harden, KD, Anthony Davis and Steph about various developments this summer, how often they play video games and what their goals were next season.

Towards the end of the informal question and answer session, Ernie asked the group, “When’s the first time one of these guys got on your radar?”

That’s when Durant started his story about first meeting Stephen Curry:

“I told Steph this,” Durant said. “I was about 10 years old and our AAU team drove down to Charlotte to play. There was this one — I thought he was white — but he was…”

That’s when Steph and most of the assorted media lost it.

“This yellow kid, right” KD continued over the chuckles, “Lets be be real now, right. Where I come from, those are light-skinned guys, and we’re all like me,” he said while gesturing to himself with a smile on his face.

“I step in the gym and all these guys are stepping up from half-court with the jump shot, and I’m like, ‘he’s not making this…’ Splash. When we played him [Steph] he only had like 35 and he was 10 years old, and I was like, ‘Who is this’? Ten years later, it’s like, whoa, that’s Steph Curry.

“It’s crazy how you cross paths with these guys and you’re kids and don’t know. And then once you — it’s like wow, it’s pretty cool to see him at that age.”

It’s not often you see NBA players in a room full of media laughing as hard as Steph and Harden were during Durant’s story. Check it out:

Why is he a racist?? He just said he “thought” he was white. After all Steph is bi-racial, maybe when he was 10 years old he looked more white than African American

  • Coach K

this shit made me laugh too.. lol

  • Squirrel Meat

I think your definition of racist is wrong.

  • Jamie Looney

he still looks more white than black, lol

  • jason

actually his mom is black and so is his father

  • HackZach

Folk, regardless of what he looks like, Stephen Curry can ball. He’s still taking care of business some ten plus years later just like he did in AAU at 10 years old. In that meeting between Durant and Stephen, the young Curry guy scored 35 points! Everyone in AAU knew he was after that game and they know him right now in the NBA because he continues to do his thing!

But why out of the entire interview did they choose to quote that line? see how the media instigates controversy?

I guess what kd trying to say is. He wondered if steph curry is white or black. Other than that he’s nothing to say with. In my points of view.

    So wrong

  • hog

U guys r unreal pullin race issue. Dummies

  • jason

    yea mixed with black duh

  • Kayla Carter

It’s not that serious. In all honesty your comments about him being racist is not gone stop his game or the love he has for it. That coach who got fired for what he said about black people now that is someone who’s racist. Durant was just being honest and meant no harm it was a quick laugh and the ignorant comments could have been avoided. I’m 15 and I can obviously see right from wrong and he wasn’t wrong. And I know for a fact Steph Curry is mixed so he does have white in him.

  • SwagLikeCesaro

No, you don’t know that for a fact. He is 100% African American, if we’re determining that based off of the race of parents. Everyone everywhere is somewhat mixed some point in their lineage, but as far as nuclear family, Steph is an African American.

  • dolomite205

steph s black. both parents are blk.

  • Lorenzo Williams

Black people come in all shades. From ebony black to pale white. Steph Curry is black man and not biracial.

  • Daniel

I know some super light mexicans and then super dark ones i fall a bit in the middle theres all shades of people

  • david halfmann

i find that racist and insulting
