While Miami Hurricanes football can take a huge step forward in their recent resurgence by beating #2 Ohio State this weekend, basketball at “The U” is still looking to break through. Last season Miami finished last place in the ACC with a 4-12 conference record, despite posting a 20-13 mark overall. With PF Dwayne Collins gone to the pros, it’ll be up to rising sophomore PG Durand Scott (10.3 ppg, 3.4 apg) to lead the Hurricanes in climbing out of the basement. In Dime #58, we profiled Scott in a “What’s My Name?” piece.Read More »
When you’ve called some of the most hyped match-ups at Rucker Park for well over a decade, you’ve pretty much seen it all. Boobie Smooth, the legendary New York City emcee and streetball icon, brought his microphone to Harlem this past Saturday for the second stop of the Red Bull 2on2 Revolution tour. With a never-ending flow of crazy nicknames and hilarious commentary, Boobie had fans rolling with laughter all day long. Check out some of the highlights.
If first impressions are as invaluable as everyone says they are, then Jermaine Wright has it all figured out. When the 37-year-old showed up to Harlem’s Lincoln Playground sporting a bright yellow headband and crazy purple shorts, it was clear he wanted the attention of the crowd. But by the end of Saturday’s Red Bull 2-on-2 Revolution Tour stop in New York City, Wright had fans talking more about his game on the court than his getup.

When Banri “Bang” Takenouchi (Photo, right) moved from Japan to the United States roughly five years ago, he did so with one intention: play basketball in tournaments across New York City. With no clue on how to prove himself in the streets, Bang turned to one of the most prominent names in streetball history: playground legend and Bounce Magazine founder Bobbito Garcia. Through a love for basketball and passion for the game, a player Bang once idolized has become one of his best friends.
“I was watching his street videos in Japan, and I emailed him,” says Bang. “I feel like he’s my big brother now.”
Garcia speaks from experience when he describes the challenges of “making it” as an unknown. Read More »
There aren’t many players signed up for Saturday’s Red Bull 2on2 Revolution Tour stop in New York City with a resume quite as impressive as that of Kenny “Serious Sat” Satterfield. The 29-year-old guard, who logged time in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers, has a well-deserved reputation in his hometown as a dominant force on the NYC streetball scene. Part of the reason he’s enjoyed so much success on both levels is simple: his game doesn’t change from hardwood to pavement.

You can’t really blame David Kahn. Bad decisions are all he has ever known.
It started back when he was a sportswriter covering the Portland Trail Blazers for The Oregonian in the 1980s, when Kahn witnessed maybe the worst NBA Draft decision in history. After the Blazers took Sam Bowie with the second overall pick (ahead of Michael Jordan) in 1984, a penchant for horrible decisions had clearly been forever engraved in the young journalist. There’s something about that sound, when ball meets net in the most beautiful of collisions, which separates the sport of basketball from all others. A hockey puck clanking off the post on a slapshot or a soccer ball silently curling its way into the top corner could never match the purity of resonance when a clean jumper finds the bottom of the net. If anyone should know that sound, it’s Dwight Brewington. Read More »
