While Miami Hurricanes football can take a huge step forward in their recent resurgence by beating #2 Ohio State this weekend, basketball at “The U” is still looking to break through. Heading to the basketball courts in South Philadelphia last Saturday, Breswell and Gindraw admittedly never expected to leave Chew Playground as champions of the city. But after upsetting two of the best teams in the tourney with a combination of heart and hustle, the former college teammates began to shift their focus towards a possible championship run. The basketball court has always been a place of sanctity for Bo Kimble. Growing up as a kid in the projects of North Philadelphia, Kimble used his talents to earn a way out, securing a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California in 1985. Alongside Dobbins High School teammate and fellow Trojan Hank Gathers, Kimble decided to transfer to Loyola-Marymount, where the Lions would fight their way to the NCAA tournament each of his three years on campus. If first impressions are as invaluable as everyone says they are, then Jermaine Wright has it all figured out. When the 37-year-old showed up to Harlem’s Lincoln Playground sporting a bright yellow headband and crazy purple shorts, it was clear he wanted the attention of the crowd. But by the end of Saturday’s Red Bull 2-on-2 Revolution Tour stop in New York City, Wright had fans talking more about his game on the court than his getup.

“We’re just two cats trying to bring our energy and our intensity and see if we can make it happen,” Wright said after registering “Heart of the Bronx” into the tournament with teammate Tyshaun Valentine. Read More »

When Banri “Bang” Takenouchi (Photo, right) moved from Japan to the United States roughly five years ago, he did so with one intention: play basketball in tournaments across New York City. With no clue on how to prove himself in the streets, Bang turned to one of the most prominent names in streetball history: playground legend and Bounce Magazine founder Bobbito Garcia. Through a love for basketball and passion for the game, a player Bang once idolized has become one of his best friends.

“I was watching his street videos in Japan, and I emailed him,” says Bang. “I feel like he’s my big brother now.”
