Dwight Howard needs an enemy

Dwight Howard

Every great story has a great conflict. Every great conflict has at least two opposing sides. If you’ve picked up your copy of Dime #60, you can read the editorial by Austin Burton where he brings up the primary problem in Dwight Howard’s growing NBA legacy: Howard does not have a rival.

For all of Dwight’s greatness, it is easy to downplay his accomplishments due to his lack of worthy opponents. Read More »

Dwight Howard begins his MVP campaign tonight

Dwight Howard

Dime’s NBA season predictions were announced earlier this week, but due to some technical difficulties, my voice was not heard. As we were tallying up the predictions of editorial staff, mine were lost in somebody’s Spam inbox. My forecasts weren’t enough to swing the majority in any category, but would have made a notable change to one:

While the rest of the Dime unanimously picked Kevin Durant to win the league’s MVP — as inevitable as seeing rats in a New York City subway station — I beg to differ. This is the year Dwight Howard gets the award. Read More »

Top 5 NBA Bench Performers (So Far)

Evan Turner

Coming into this season, I knew that this year would emphasize the fact that basketball is the ultimate team sport. Put it this way: There’s going to be more sharing of the spotlight than a Wu-Tang Clan interview. Sure, every pack has its alpha dog, but that alpha is nothing without the rest of the pack.

One of the most underrated attributes of a championship teams is a good and feisty bench. The bottom half of the roster has to be ready to pounce on opportunities when their number is called. So far, some key players have had some adjusting to do in order to get back to their starting form. As result, the bench guys have shown their readiness to step in and dominate. Here are the top five bench performers from the first two days of the season: Read More »

Are the Toronto Raptors the NBA’s worst franchise?

Chris Bosh, Dime #33

***EDITOR’S NOTE: We received a significant amount of backlash for this post, with angry readers calling us out for not being factually on point (the errant claim that Vince Carter was left out of the Raptors’ 15th Anniversary celebration), for not being thorough in our analysis and for being disingenuous in our motives for posting this piece. For the most part our critics are absolutely correct, this article is not up to our standards. Some of the judgment that went into this post was not great, starting with the misleading headline – we can admit that. And if we are going to make tough claims like the ones put forth in this piece, we need to back them up with a lot more facts and analysis than we did in this post.

A lot of other sites might have just taken the post down and buried it – we’re not going to do that. We are going to man up, admit our mistakes and promise to do better. You, our readers deserve that. Without you, we are nothing, and we will fight to win back anyone we lost with this type of sloppy work. It won’t happen again.

– Patrick Cassidy, Director of Content

Once again, the Toronto Raptors are in rebuilding mode. After two more highly-publicized bad breakups this summer — Chris Bosh leaving in free agency and Hedo Turkoglu forcing a trade — the Raptors are left with no big names or potential All-Stars (at least for 2011) on the roster. Having missed the playoffs again last season with Bosh and Hedo, the team is expected to finish way out of postseason contention this time around. Read More »

Put Up or Shut Up: 5 NBA Players That Need to Bring It This Season

O.J. Mayo

Underachieving is frustrating. For outsiders looking in, it is so disappointing to watch talent go to waste. Sometimes circumstances like injuries and the numbers game prevent those from reaching their full potential. There is also the steep learning curve of the pro game. But more times than not, we shake our heads when the shortcomings are due to simple lack of effort. At the end of the day, production is everything.

After all of the hoopla and praise, Anthony Randolph has fallen short of expectations so far in the preseason. Read More »

We Reminisce: Top 5 Forgotten NBA Video Game Cover Athletes

NBA Live 99

After years of playing with “Roster Player #99″ during Michael Jordan‘s glory days, the real (digital) MJ is finally a usable character and cover athlete of a video game. Thank you, NBA 2K11, for breaking a drought that existed since, what, Bulls vs. Blazers? It was a ritual for me during the 90s to have to create-a-player and produce my own MJ for the Bulls roster. It was always disappoint for me as a youngster having to use the inadequately rated replica to substitute for Jordan. Read More »

5 NBA Rookie of the Year Favorites Not Named John Wall

The NBA’s annual GM Survey was released earlier this week, and a lot of safe predictions were made. By overwhelming majority results that any politician would kill for, the GMs predicted the L.A. Lakers will three-peat as champions, and Kevin Durant will be MVP. They also chose Deron Williams as the No. 1 point guard in the League and Dwight Howard as the top center by wide margins.

When asked to predict the 2011 Rookie of the Year, 68 percent of the GMs named John Wall, the No. 1 overall pick of the Washington Wizards. Read More »

Top 5 Ex-NBA Players Turned Front-Office Executives

Earlier this summer, it was rumored that Donnie Walsh was grooming Allan Houston to become the next general manager of the New York Knicks. Not long after that, team owner James Dolan (briefly) re-hired Isiah Thomas as a part-time consultant, and rumors began to fly that Isiah was being set up to eventually take over for Walsh, who is 69 years old. And as recently as earlier this week, when the Knicks were the subject of NBA TV’s “Real Training Camp,” Houston was interviewed and mentioned as Walsh’s possible successor. Read More »
