Just as there has been the evolution of man, there has been the evolution of basketball. Though the debate continues between the religious claiming we were created by the hands of an all-powerful being, and the scientists who assert the Big Bang Theory” there are no two sides to the evolution of basketball. It just happened.
Not only have the rules and regulations been modified over the years, but the prototype players are bigger, faster and stronger than they once were. Another significant facet of this evolution is the increase in negative critiques frequently received by officials.
What I don’t understand is why people in all areas of the spectrum – from fans and reporters to players and coaches – act like it’s a new thing when an official makes a bad call or misses one altogether. Read More »

Let’s take a quick trip to fantasy land where Jameer Nelson returns to Orlando for the finals and dominates the court like he did before his injury. Okay times up, come back to the real world.

It’s time to take that Diana Taurasi jersey hanging in your closet and give it away. At the NBA Store’s Center Court this afternoon, the Phoenix Mercury and LifeLock - an identity theft protection company - broke ground in partnering up for the first-ever branded WNBA team jersey. Instead of reading “Phoenix” on the front of the jersey, your new Taurasi #3 threads will sport “LifeLock” across the chest. Premiere League soccer teams have been doing this forever, and now the WNBA is blazing the train in the U.S.

The first rule of Fight Club is that you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is that you do not talk about Fight Club.
Though we could spend pages outlining the ways in which Fight Club is similar to the Denver Nuggets (WWE, Tattoos, Goons), I’ll try to keep it brief. If the Nuggets are going to do what the Fight Club fighters did - continue to exist even though most sane people believed that they’d be killed/shut down - they need to follow a simple set of rules. It’s nothing that Tyler Durden would say. But just like his eight rules, these four key principles must be taken seriously. Otherwise, it’s all over.

Just as High School Hoop pitted Brandon Jennings and John Wall against each other, some of our readers requested an analysis comparing and contrasting Ricky Rubio and “Young Money”. Right off the bat I’d like to say that Jennings has the advantage; he has played in America all his life up until recently, and is now gaining experience playing in Europe. Do not be fooled- I am not saying he is better- I am only suggesting he is better off. Rubio, on the other hand, grew up playing in Europe and is entering the NBA draft with no real familiarity with the style of ball over here.

Instinctual and limber, but young and statistically challenged - Ricky Rubio is 18 years old, 180 pounds and European. He is also prospectively one of the top 5 picks for the 2009 draft. Creativity and play-making ability are the main characteristics of the game that landed him in the respectable position he’s in. But is that really enough to be successful in the NBA?

Hey everyone, my name is Liz Toppi and I will be posting for the next couple of months as an intern at Dime. I am a senior at the University of Rhode Island and a Rhode Island native. I’ve been playing basketball since I can remember and I love the game. My favorite player is Rajon Rondo and I’m a Celtics fan (and at no point in time wish to discuss that last game against the Magic in this past series). Read More »
