The NBA’s Top 5 Go-To Guys

LeBron James

Something hit me this morning while I watched a trailer for Hugh Jackman‘s upcoming Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie. (I hear Ryan Reynolds is working on a Slinky biopic for Summer 2011.)

As much as writers like using inhuman metaphors to describe elite athletes, be it cold-blooded snakes or steel-veined robots, what makes clutch performances so impressive is that these are real people stepping up their already world-class talents to another level when many would fold under a fraction of the same pressure. Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#6: Deron Williams)

Deron Williams

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

DERON WILLIAMS, Utah Jazz I’m not sure exactly when the shift happened, but it’s results are undeniable. Somewhere along the way, Deron Williams went from “All-Star hopeful” to “All-Star lock,” from his name hitting a ceiling at “one of” the best point guards in the world to receiving more “the best” mentions than all but one of his peers. Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#7: Kevin Durant)

Kevin Durant

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

KEVIN DURANT, Oklahoma City Thunder To be honest, had I stuck to my plan of completing this go-to guy countdown before the beginning of the season, Durant would have fallen into the 4th-5th place range. Read More »

Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#9: Chris Paul)

Chris Paul

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

CHRIS PAUL, New Orleans Hornets It’s probably unfair to judge CP3’s merits as a go-to clutch player the morning after his team lost to the Clippers.

In many ways, Paul has been than ever this year, leading the Hornets to an 11-2 record with a first-year head coach (Monty Williams) and one All-Star teammate (David West). Read More »

Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#10: Tim Duncan)

Tim Duncan

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

TIM DUNCAN, San Antonio Spurs You know how I know Duncan is old? Justifying his spot as a Top-10 clutch performer in the NBA isn’t as tough as justifying his spot as the No. 1 option on the Spurs. Read More »

Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#11: Brandon Roy)

Brandon Roy

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

BRANDON ROY, Portland Trail Blazers It’s so easy to take for granted. Not just health. Good health. The ability to run for 48 minutes, 94 feet at a time, without aggravating pain. The luxury of waking up the next morning without your knees, ankles and feet berating you for those decisions. Read More »

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

JOE JOHNSON, Atlanta Hawks There is a very good chance that Joe Johnson is as good right now as he’s ever going to get. Which is very good: Solid 20-point, 5-board, 5-dime type, All-Star staple, spontaneous combustions of 35 to 40 points some nights, no stranger to game-winners and daggers, one of the 15 to 20 best in the world at what he does for a living. Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

DERRICK ROSE, Chicago Bulls The end of the era was about four years ago. The funeral was held over the past week.

Once upon a time, “score-first” point guards ran the NBA. At a time when quickness became more coveted than size, and the influences of Michael Jordan (long-term) and the AND 1 Mix Tape style (short-term) took hold, men like Allen Iverson, Steve Francis, Stephon Marbury and Baron Davis thrived. Tyreke Evans

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

TYREKE EVANS, Sacramento Kings It’s called instinct for a reason. Lion cubs must be taught the tricks of hunt, but they’re already ingrained with the knowledge that survival depends on catching prey.

In other words: You can teach the method, not the motivation. Read More »

Ranking the NBA’s 30 Go-To Guys (#17: Amar’e Stoudemire)

Who do you want your offense to run through with the game on the line? Counting down from 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

AMAR’E STOUDEMIRE, New York Knicks The dumbest basketball argument in the world right now — which is quite an accomplishment considering some of the LeBron garbage polluting the blogosphere recently — is the one claiming Amar’e Stoudemire has been great only because he won the Arizona Lottery and got to play with Steve Nash for six years.
