May 18, 1998, wasn’t when Michael Jordan hit a dagger of a jump shot on Bryon Russell to ice a sixth NBA championship. Wasn’t the time he had 13 boards in the season’s third game, only to grab 17 in the next. Nor was it the night of one of his 12 regular-season games of scoring 40 or more points. With the exception of Jordan in Utah, those moments led up to what makes today memorable, 14 years ago: Jordan won his fifth MVP. Read More »

Excuse the pun, but the Spurs’ Boris Diaw doesn’t hold the weight of say, an NBA MVP. Or an All-Star. Or some role players. But on Thursday the big Frenchman hit all seven of his field goals and went for 16 points to help put San Antonio ahead, 2-1, on the Los Angeles Clips. He’s your average role player, who nine years into his career has averages of 9.5 points, 4.9 boards and 4.0 assists per game on 49 percent shooting. He’s also the butt of nearly every fat joke in the NBA. Read More »

Let’s say for argument’s sake that Dwyane Wade had scored 22 points last night on 19 shots, had one or two of his customary highlight plays and no back-n-forth with Erik Spoelstra on the bench. Even if Miami had still lost big, would we even be talking about this? This, understandably, is what’s wrong with D-Wade? Is he hurt? Is he tired? Is he – and this is the thing at the back of everyone’s mind, the thing no one wants to admit – hitting the wall?
Wade said recently he’s comfortable with his role in Miami, but as LeBron James has repeatedly shown with his failure to grasp the responsibility of closing opponents out, the Heat will probably still need their favorite son to take them home. Read More »

Because we once put Lance Stephenson on the cover of his magazine, and because this happened last night in a pivotal playoff game, it was ripe for some “Born Ready” jokes. In the midst of the carnage in Indiana last night, LeBron missed a technical free throw and Stephenson decided to inject himself in the action for once by flashing the choke sign at James. Actually it was more like Caron Butler serves up the facial, but in the process hits Tim Duncan across the face with his off arm, thus forcing Duncan to go reeling. Watching this play live, I didn’t notice that and started laughing at Duncan’s walk of shame. At the end of the night though, none of this mattered. The Clippers were destroyed and Butler didn’t do anything outside of one tiny third quarter run. Read More »

Kevin Garnett wasn’t about to let some massive Sixer fan throw him off his game. Kudos to that Philly dude though. This is something normally reserved for drunk frat kids at a college campus. Read More »

What is it with Spurs fans and shaving their heads into the likenesses of their favorite players? Earlier we showed you the cut that combined Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili on one dome. That was intense, yes — but did it earn anyone an in-school suspension? Only Matt Bonner can claim that. Read More »

The Spurs are now officially old. Okay, so their average age (26.9) is actually the lowest of the Tim Duncan era. But Danny Green, Tiago Splitter and Kawhi Leonard are not the Spurs. Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Gregg Popovich and Tony Parker are. Up until today, whenever you talked about age with the Old Reliables, you could always add a “but” at the end. But Tony Parker is still young. Well, he finally hit a milestone today. Parker is now 30 years old. Read More »

With the series tied up at one game a piece, and Dwyane Wade thinking they celebrated too much at the end of Game 2, the Pacers have made a bold choice by having a “Gold Out” at tonight’s game. Fans attending the game will be receiving a gold shirt according to Wish TV. “Gold Swagger” is plastered in large print on the front of the t-shirt, and on the back in smaller print (but all caps) reads, “ROUND TWO-AHH,” a call to Reb Porter, the long-time Pacers announcer who retired in 2010. The Boston Celtics set out to teach the youn 76ers a lesson last night in Game 3 of their playoff series. Mission accomplished.
If Philly had one true bright spot, it was the play of Thad Young, who put up 22 points in 26 minutes and unleashed this monster block on Brandon Bass: Read More »
