David Blatt Says Cleveland As Title Favorite Is “Unfair” To Cavs, Other Contenders

David Blatt

It could be far worse for David Blatt. The Cleveland Cavaliers’ new coach is guiding arguably the most talented team in basketball and has the all-encompassing luxury of forging an identity around the singular presence of LeBron James. Sportsbooks have the Cavs as title favorites, and a majority of league personnel, analysts, and followers are choosing Blatt’s squad to win the Eastern Conference. His prospects for the 2014-2015 season are just a bit brighter than those of fellow rookie coach Derek Fisher’s with the New York Knicks, basically. Read More »

Dwight Howard Says “I Didn’t Leave LA Because I Was Afraid Of Kobe”

Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard

Ever since Henry Abbott’s extensive piece for ESPN about the unintentional role Kobe Bryant played in limiting the LA’s ability to sign free agents who aren’t keen on playing with the Mamba, everyone assumed Dwight Howard fit in such a category; a position furthered by Abbott’s reporting and reading between the lines in public comments by Lakers brass. Dwight spurned an extra $30 million and signed with Houston in the summer of 2013, but he’s clear it wasn’t because he’s “afraid” of Kobe. Read More »

Dirk Says Dinners Are On Chandler Parsons Because “It’s My Money Anyway”

Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons

Dirk Nowitzki took a massive paycut on the deal he signed with the Dallas Mavericks this summer. Despite the 36 year-old holding max-level offers from the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, and undoubtedly many more, Dirk signed on Mark Cuban’s dotted line for a paltry $25 million over three seasons so Dallas could ink Chandler Parsons to a contract carrying a $15 million salary while maintaining future financial flexibility. Talk about team first. Read More »

Kevin Garnett: “I Have A Little Bit Of An Edge To Me This Year”

Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett wasn’t satisfied with his oft-dispiriting play of last season, and has a way to ensure that similar struggles won’t plague him in 2014-2015. How? By playing with an “edge” that the notoriously intense future Hall-of-Famer apparently lacked in his first season with the Brookyn Nets. Read More »

Tom Thibodeau, Pau Gasol

Report: Kawhi Leonard Seeks Max Extension, But No Progress In Spurs Talks

Kawhi Leonard

Tim Duncan famously signed for less than he could command on the open market a few years back in an attempt to free up more room for the Spurs to get him some help. Conversely, 2014 NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, who will be a restricted free agent next summer if he doesn’t sign an extension by Friday, is looking for a max extension. According to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, no agreement has been reached and the sides haven’t made any progress during talks in recent weeks. Read More »

ESPN Ranks Kevin Durant Eighth Best Player; He Tweets, Deletes Response

Kevin Durant

Disclaimer: Before Kevin Durant suffered a stress fracture that will keep him sidelined for approximately two months, ESPN ranked him as the second-best player in the NBA. In fact, ESPN NBA Rank voters nearly bestowed him a perfect score of 10.0 – KD’s pre-injury 9.94 was barely lower than LeBron James’ mark. But the worldwide leader polled their analysts again after Durant’s unfortunate break, asking them to account for negative impacts of his injury. Eighth-best is where that new assessment placed him. Not bad. But given Durant’s humorous – and since-deleted – response on Twitter, he isn’t exactly pleased with it, either. Read More »

J.R. Smith

Only two weeks, ago, J.R. Smith said that the triangle offense was “going to take a few months” to learn. So it’s no surprise that the New York Knicks’ notorious chucker is still adjusting to his team’s new offensive scheme with the regular just days away. As Smith admits, his prior basketball mentality makes playing in the triangle “a struggle.” Read More »
