People always say guys play better in a contract year. Check out this video of Al Harrington competing in a Spartan Race from last weekend on Staten Island, New York. For most of the race, he’s running like Big Z. Send a few gladiators to chase after him and boom, he’s Usain Bolt. What’s a Spartan Race? It’s billed as an ultimate obstacle course designed by insane ultra athletes and a Royal Marine. I’m assuming that’s why Harrington looked completely drained by the end.
With three contributing players inked to overseas deals that may prevent them from rejoining the NBA in the 2011-12 regular season (should it exist) and with at least two significant free agents to re-sign, the Denver Nuggets make for an intriguing study from a fantasy basketball perspective. While all that means the Nuggets will likely have fewer fantasy assets than they did last season, it might open things up for other players on the team. Let’s take a glance at the potential fallout. What if Charles Barkley could be quiet? The world would end. The Chuckster may not be in NBA 2K12, but he’s still letting his voice be heard one way or another, mentioning on the “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000 that he doesn’t think Derrick Roseshould go overseas and play. Actually, Barkley doesn’t think any great player should do it. It’s too much of a risk, and the incentive to actually make a move like that isn’t large enough. Read More »
On Twitter a couple weeks ago, WFAN Radio’s (New York) Evan Roberts tweeted a suggestion that as part of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, each team should be allowed to void one bad contract. I thought that was an interesting idea, and did some research, and here is one contract each NBA team would probably like to void: Read More »
Two minutes one night, 22 minutes the next. Denver Nuggets rookie Gary Forbes has literally been battling for playing time all year long. Despite not logging the most consistent minutes, the UMass grad has made the most of what time Coach George Karl has given him. Averaging 4.9 points in 12 minutes per game, including eight outbursts of 10 or more points and a career-high 19-point outing against New York earlier this season, Forbes is ready. After a recent practice, we got the chance to hop on the phone with Forbes to talk about life in the Mile-High City after ’Melo, his journey to the NBA and more. Read More »
Yesterday morning, several reports made it appear to be a lock ‘Melo was headed to the Nets — who, along with the Nuggets and Pistons, just had to work out some minor details of a proposed three-way trade that also involved Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and maybe or maybe not Al Harrington, among others. For whatever reason, Jan. 10 has become the day it seems Carmelo Anthony HAS to be traded. As a result, the rumors are coming out of Denver faster than J.R. Smith can get “Peace Out ‘Melo” tattooed on the three inches of space he has left on his collarbone.
While the particulars vary from report to report, almost everyone is saying there is a three-team deal between the Nuggets, Nets and Pistons that is close to being confirmed by all sides. That would send ‘Melo to New Jersey along with Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton, with Devin Harris (Nuggets) and Derrick Favors (Nuggets) among the others prominently involved. The only differences lie in the details involving other players and picks Read More »
During last night’s Lakers/Bulls game, Jeff Van Gundy revealed that Tom Thibodeau, a former assistant of his, is surprisingly particular about his clothes and can bench 350 (easily the strongest coach in the League). The other thing Thibodeau can do is coach defense, which he did amazingly well as his Bulls held L.A. to just 84 points in an upset win. Oh, and Chicago also has some kid named Derrick Rose. He’s aiight … While it took a while for Chicago’s offense to show up, the defense was able to shut down the champs for long stretches as L.A. fell into some familiar bad habits. Read More »
Buy Low: Darren Collison has been underwhelming, to say the least, so far this season. He’s only playing 28:30 per game and is averaging around 14/3/4, which is tolerable at best. While it shouldn’t be an enormous surprise that coach Jim O’Brien has opted to give T.J. Ford enough minutes and consequently strangle his potential for fantasy stardom, it would certainly be a surprise if the young point guard doesn’t improve as the season wears on. Give him time to get a better grasp of that offense, get healthier and win over his coach – he still stands a decent shot at getting closer to meeting expectations before the season’s up. Read More »
