If Kevin Garnett is truly on to something, don’t be surprised if the traditional celebratory Gatorade shower is replaced by coconut water in the near future.
Coconut water – a mix of water, potassium, calcium and magnesium extracted from coconuts – has experienced a recent growth in popularity as a competitor to traditional sports drinks, and has apparently taken the NBA by storm. Read More »

Before LeBron James causes a party in one city and breaks hearts in five others, the teams still in pursuit of the NBA’s biggest star are undoubtedly vying for one last audience with LBJ before he goes live on-air at 9 p.m. on ESPN. What will those teams say to LeBron should they get his ear for a last-ditch pitch? Next up: Chicago: Read More »

In the biggest free-agency bonanza to ever hit the NBA, LeBron James is the first domino that has to fall before everyone else figures out their next move. From D-Wade all the way down to Brian Scalabrine, you could say every other free agent’s future will in some way be affected by LeBron’s decision.
With the official start of free agency set for 12:01 a.m. Wednesday night/Thursday morning, we decided to look at each team believed to be in the running for LeBron and delve into the reasons why LBJ would and wouldn’t (or should and shouldn’t) sign with them. Last up: The New York Knicks. Read More »

On the basketball court and in the corporate arena, Dwyane Wade’s potential appears limitless. As the perennial MVP candidate and newest Air Jordan pitchman confronts off-court distractions and constant speculation about his future, he’s not close to giving up his spot on the medal stand as one of the undisputed top three players in the game.
Earlier this season, Wade posed for the cover of Dime #54 (on newsstands now) and sat down to interview for this story. Read More »

Yesterday was weird. For the last year or so, one of the running jokes in the Dime office has been that the Magic are collectively too jacked for one NBA team. We’d already nicknamed Dwight Howard “The Centaur” for obvious reasons, then you got J.J. Redick looking like an MTV “True Life: I’m a Jersey Shore Bodybuilder” alum, Pietrus and Jameer on swole, Anthony Johnson dunking on cats at 49 years old, and even Skip seemed to get more cut-up as soon as he got to Orlando. When they picked up Brandon Bass, it kicked up the too-diesel talk all over again. But then yesterday, when news broke that one of the Magic players had tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, it turned out to be one of the guys we never talked about: Rashard Lewis … Read More »

Because I currently keep vampire hours, I was actually awake and listening to the radio at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday when the New York Mets announced that manager Willie Randolph was getting fired. Now I’ll be the first to admit I don’t follow baseball too closely outside of my Seattle Mariners and my favorite individual players (Dontrelle Willis, Ken Griffey Jr., C.C. Sabathia), so I haven’t been paying much attention to the Mets despite living in NYC. But I do know that when I heard Randolph had been let go I immediately remembered what he said earlier this season, about being criticized more harshly than other managers/coaches in pro sports because he’s Black. In that interview Randolph cited previous New York coaches Herm Edwards (Jets) and Isiah Thomas (Knicks) as victims of the same problem. Read More »
