Duke Midnight Madness Slam Dunk Contest

After bypassing his final year of high school eligibility to join Duke for the 2009-10 season, Andre Dawkins played in 38 games last year, scoring a team-best 169 points off the bench. And after winning the dunk contest during Duke’s “Countdown to Craziness” last night, you can see why the Blue Devils are excited to see what he can do this year.

Season Cancelled: Duke Basketball

While normally the highlights from Midnight Madness are simply dunk contests and cameos from former players, the guys at Duke (with help from the school’s improv department) took it to a whole new level. Check out the video starring Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith and the rest of the guys as they find other jobs on campus after the season was canceled because it was “unfair to the other teams.” Hilarious!

Guys like Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry and Brandon Jennings are making headlines with standout stat lines, but one of the most consistently impressive rookies in the Vegas Summer League so far has been DeMar DeRozan. Four games in, he’s steadily improving — last night DeRozan put up 20 points on an efficient 9-for-16 from the field (56 percent) against the Suns — and is showing he’s got more to his game than running, jumping and dunking. (Not that he didn’t throw in a couple highlight-reel bangers.) With Anthony Parker headed to Cleveland, DeRozan should be Toronto’s opening day starting two-guard, and between Jose Calderon and Hedo Turkoglu‘s playmaking, and Chris Bosh drawing double-teams, DeRozan should have plenty of opportunities to succeed early.
