Pundits and fans constantly analyze the NBA Draft, thinking they can nail the right pick. But sometimes you just get a bad draft. The draft might be deft of superstars and your favorite team may be left with a middling player who ends up sitting on the bench for the majority of his NBA tenure. And sometimes, you get a draft where you can’t miss. Read More »

Before 2002, the last time the Boston Celtics made the postseason, Kevin Garnett was donning a royal blue and yellow Farragut Academy jersey. Beantown’s trip to the 2002 NBA Playoffs ended a six-year drought in which the Cs failed to both get out of the lottery and reincarnate Larry Bird. Read More »

We mentioned this in Smack over the weekend because, at least in the NBA world, it’s pretty important news. Cards play a key role in the NBA lifestyle, and this push to make bourré more popular is quite interesting. This is the game Gilbert Arenas was playing in Washington that so famously led to his suspension. Read More »

When you’re going good, or you hit a big-time shot, you want to celebrate. It’s human nature to express our joy when we’ve accomplished something incredible. Nowhere is this more true than the NBA, where big shots are often followed by big celebrations; where players can get so hot everything starts to go in, and where a last second shot can birth new legends. With all that drama, there are bound to be some incredible celebrating. Read More »

The Oklahoma City Thunder laid the smackdown on the Bobcats on Monday night, winning 114-69, and negating the positive work new head coach Mike Dunlap had done with the Bobcats to start the season. The Thunder’s 45-point rout of the Bobcats was highlighted by their early 79-25 lead, which prompted DailyThunder blogger, Royce Young, to tweet: “It’s time like these where I really miss Cole Aldrich.” Hasheem Thabeet even recorded his first career double-double (!) in some prolonged garbage time. Last night Twitter was all about the latest installment from ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, “Broke” that aired in prime time. The documentary focused on professional athletes who managed to lose all of the money they earned playing professional sports due to things like gambling, real estate, poor advice, bad “friends,” and more. Antoine Walker was one of the stars of the show because he basically lost his money in every imaginable way, blowing through a reported $110 million fortune. As part of the promotion for doc, ‘Toine agreed to talk to Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless about how he lost all of that money. It’s hard for him to accurately explain it (and harder for the rest of the world to understand it), but here’s the video: Read More »

Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” like the “Cat Daddy” and “Dougie” before it, is the latest dance to go viral. At the time of this writing, the video has more than 144 million views on YouTube, and there are thousands more videos of others impersonating the dance on the web.
The question now becomes: who will be the first NBA player to bust out the “invisible horse” in-game? (Challenge issued, NBA players.) Read More »

It goes without saying that Jeremy Lin is a smart guy. Having Harvard on your credentials makes that sort of a no-brainer. When the new Houston guard visited Taiwan during his first visit to see where his parents were born, Lin — born and raised in the U.S. but clearly cognizant of international relations — slipped a question Sunday during press availability about whether he’s Chinese or Taiwanese like a bad halfcourt trap. We had a joke all lined up. With Big Baby rumbling to 23 points and 12 rebounds, and with Dwight Howard in an injury/depressed/look at me funk, Orlando was setting themselves up. In his last three games before last night, Davis was averaging 21.3 points, 11 rebounds and 50 percent from the floor. For once, he WAS more useful than Howard. But somehow after hurting his lower back enough to be stretched out by the team’s physical therapist at midcourt before the third quarter, and with his shot not falling, Dwight didn’t give up. He did work. Read More »
