It’s funny how a game in Pittsburgh gets people to pay attention to Staten Island.
New York City’s reputation as basketball’s Mecca isn’t limited just to Madison Square Garden or Rucker Park — at least, that’s what second-year coach Dan Hurley is preaching at Wagner College. Getting that message to resonate has been aided by the Seahawks’ upset at Pitt, 59-54, on Dec. 23 for their first win over a ranked team since 1978. It doesn’t get bigger than this. Tonight, high school powerhouses St. Patrick (Elizabeth, N.J.) and St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) will go head-to-head at the Rutgers Athletic Center. No. 1 vs. No. 2 in New Jersey. No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the nation. Both teams are undefeated, 26-0 and 28-0 respectively, and many people are calling this a de-facto national championship. (As they should.)

Rating the best basketball books of all-time is like arguing with your friends over the greatest hip-hop albums ever. AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted? It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back? Breaking Atoms? Illmatic? You could go on all day. All solid choices, but too much personal preference, flavor and style come into play to settle on a clear-cut winner.
