In one of the most storied rivalries in sports, Duke and North Carolina played last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, in what turned out to be a great game. For a collegiate clash that date’s all the way back to 1920, Duke got their 100th win in the all-time series, although UNC still leads 130-100. With everyone still buzzing about Tobacco Road this morning, we decided to ponder what an alumni game with current NBA players would look like today. Read More »

It appears Carmelo Anthony isn’t the only player on Denver that teams are interested in. According to Marcus Thompson II of the Oakland Tribune, the Warriors (who play the Nuggets tonight) have inquired about Nene to help get some scoring from their frontline that currently consists of David Lee, Andris Biedrins and Brandan Wright. It’s a little early to break out the Run-TMC nostalgia — or even relics from the Baron/J-Rich heyday — but the Golden State Warriors are hot right now. Last night’s win over the Knicks puts G-State at 6-2 on the young season, as the team ranks 5th in the NBA in scoring offense while Monta Ellis is 2nd in individual scoring (27.1 ppg) and David Lee is 5th in rebounding (11.3 rpg).
In the visitor’s locker room at Madison Square Garden, I got up with some of the team’s key reserves — guard Reggie Williams, swingman Rodney Carney and forward Brandan Wright — to get a look inside one of the most interesting teams in the League: Read More »

You have to wonder if the Denver Nuggets had any idea how quickly this Carmelo Anthony thing would spiral out of their control. Back when the Nuggets got knocked out of the first round of the playoffs by Utah, it was bad, but you still figured the team had a bright future with ‘Melo (who’d already signed one extension in Denver and seemed content where he was) not too far removed from a Western Conference Finals berth, a few more years of quality Chauncey, some young talent in Ty Lawson and J.R. Smith, etc. Just a few months later, the odds are looking slim that Denver opens this season with ‘Melo on the roster. Did the Nuggets know ‘Melo had been growing frustrated? Read More »

Once the Big Three was formed in Miami, it seems Louis Amundson was the most coveted NBA free agent on the market. And while last week the Hornets appeared to be the front-runner to sign him, according to his agent Mark Bartelstein, the Warriors snuck in to sign him to a two-year, $5 million deal. The second year is a player option. Read More »

While it seems like almost everyone was a free agent this summer, there were still plenty of NBA players under contract who didn’t hit the open market. Some of these guys probably wish they had been free agents, though, as they either don’t fit with their current team or they aren’t getting the minutes they deserve. These are 10 guys who would do well with a change of scenery: Read More »

If Vince Carter is the 2010 Most Disappointing Player of the NBA playoffs, Rasheed Wallace took the crown during the regular season. But while Vince’s untimely no-show helped deny the Magic a return trip to the Finals, ‘Sheed is still in position to sneak out of his letdown of a season with a championship.
Vince and ‘Sheed share another legacy. They are two of the most talented players to ever come out of the University of North Carolina, and at the same time, could be Exhibit A and Exhibit B of a trend I’ve noticed: Over the last 20 years or so, the North Carolina NBA register looks more like a ballot for the Da Vinci Code All-Stars. Now that we know what’s up with Kentucky’s pro prospects, expect the 2010 high school recruiting class to come into focus. With the announcement that five Wildcats — freshmen John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe, plus junior Patrick Patterson — have declared for this year’s NBA Draft, high-profile undecided high schoolers like Brandon Knight, C.J. Leslie, Josh Selby and others now know what they’re going into should they sign with Kentucky. The rest of the undecided chips will fall accordingly. Read More »

By now you don’t need a Clyde Frazier pimp poem to tell you the Knicks probably wish they would have drafted Brandon Jennings — or Terrence Williams, or Tyler Hansbrough, or Ty Lawson — over Jordan Hill in last year’s NBA Draft.
Two-thirds of the way through his rookie year, Hill has played in less than half of New York’s games, and hasn’t done much (4.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg) when he does see the court. The 6-10 power forward out of Arizona appears every bit like just another left-too-early Draft bust. Read More »

In one of the NBA’s most recent – and unnoticed – moves, the Golden State Warriors signed forward Cartier Martin to a 10-day contract; making him the fifth Gatorade call-up from the D-League this season. Cartier, who had spent some time with the Charlotte Bobcats last season, was averaging just over 14 points and four boards a game for the Iowa Energy. Not only does Martin bring some much-needed relief to the injury-ridden Warriors, he has a chance to catch on for the remainder of the season. Read More »
