“You can write the obituary; I’m not.” Even after losing star point guard Rajon Rondo to a torn ACL earlier this season, Doc Rivers wasn’t ready to die. He made sure the Celtics weren’t either. Apparently, the Knicks missed the memo. Read More »

Atlanta forward Josh Smith is reportedly on the move by 3 p.m. tomorrow’s deadline. After telling him that they would not offer him a maximum contract, Atlanta’s front office is looking to take a page out of Orlando’s book from Dwight Howard, and bring back valuable pieces for their star rather than losing him to free agency. The moment of truth has arrived for the Boston Celtics. No, that is not a failed attempt at wit to incorporate Paul Pierce’s nickname – it just so happens to be a very harsh reality with the news that Rajon Rondo will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. Read More »

Back in Dime #67, we featured Brandon Bass in the magazine spitting about his game behind the mic. The dude is nice, even if he admitted to us that he doesn’t take this thing too seriously. His video for “Billion Dollar Dreams” took off once it hit YouTube about a year ago, and from the looks of this new video, Bass “could really do this.” Read More »

The Boston Celtics are the best mediocre team in the NBA. Certainly they don’t intend to hold that distinction come season’s end but right now that’s about the best they can muster. It’s hard to fathom how this team can lose by 20 to the Pistons and beat the Thunder a few nights later. The Celtics hope to be, and still have time to become an elite team in the league but they have had an inconsistent start given all the promise their roster showed on paper entering the season. The Knicks rarely found themselves on the losing end of the turnover battle in their undefeated start to this season. They also never had someone so thoroughly at ease against their defense until Chandler Parsons‘ first half Friday. The Rockets forward upended the Jeremy Lin vs. Knicks/Raymond Felton narrative when he didn’t miss in the first quarter, knocking down his first eight shots en route to 26 points — in the first half. The Rockets torched the Knicks’ defense that had been at or near the top of league statistics for the season’s first two weeks for 131 points in a 28-point win. Read More »

You have to hand it to Ball Up CEO Demetrius Spencer. He has a vision and knows how to put on a show. Ball Up made their sixth stop of their 10-city tour in Boston last week and although The Professor was a DNP because of plantar fasciitis and The Bone Collector got injured in the first quarter, Team Ball Up soundly defeated their Boston opponents, 105-87, with an array of high-flying dunks, ballhandling exploits that confused their opponents and precision shooting. There’s a time and place for shaking things up in the NBA, and there’s another for finding a rhythm with familiar parts and pieces. When free agency opened for official signings on Wednesday, most the attention went to the shiny new additions around the league, from Steve Nash in Los Angeles to Omer Asik in Houston. Creating — or holding together — a contender isn’t just about the add-ons, though; it’s about keeping the best players from before who already have experience. Read More »

We think it’s unfair to make jokes about Jason Kidd playing with a cane now that he’s agreed to a three-year deal worth reportedly $9 million to return to Dallas. Wait, what’s that? Oh, he changed his mind three hours later to play with the Knicks. That about-face was the story of the NBA on Thursday in what has become even more of an old guards’ league. Free agency so far has been a job fair where only old point guards have shown up, and everyone’s fighting over them. Note to the draft class of 2013: Help wanted if you’re a point guard. Read More »

It looks like Brandon Bass will stick around Boston for three more years. The Celtics have agreed with the small forward on a deal to keep him in Celtics green through 2015. NBA.com confirmed the deal for the former LSU standout who had a breakout game this playoffs when he scored 27 points against Philadelphia in Game 5 of their playoff series. He averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 points per game in 2011-12. Read More »
