Brian McKnight Explained How He And Travi$ Scott Linked Up For ‘Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight’

For those who were wondering if Brian McKnight had any idea why Travi$ Scott‘s new album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, had his last name in the title, the answer is a resounding no. The legendary singer told The Fader his 17-year-old stepdaughter explained it to him when he asked about Quavo’s lyric on “Pick Up the Phone,” which inspired the album name.

“Quavo had said this whole birds in the trap thing with my name in it, I’m trying to figure out what it is because these kids have a whole different way of speaking and interacting and I’m an old man,” McKnight stated. “I have no idea what’s going on, but I know that she gets excited every time they play it at the football game.”

As for how the now infamous promo video shoot came together, it had a lot to do with McKnight’s desire to show people how funny he is. “[I didn’t] want to be the guy that’s like, ‘Ahh, the old guy didn’t want to do the thing with the young guy,’ so I went and showed up and did it,” he explained.

So there you have it. It took a high school senior and McKnight’s sense of humor to finally bring Brian McKnight and Travi$ Scott together.
