On July 8th of last year, LeBron James announced in front of a national audience on ESPN, “I’m taking my talents to South Beach.” That announcement unleashed a strong legion of “haters” – primarily from Cleveland – but with members all over the country. These haters are people who suddenly became fervently anti-LeBron for a variety of reasons: “The Decision” was a slap in the face to Cleveland, he’s a coward who can’t win without Dwyane Wade, he turned his back on a city that adored him, and the list goes on and on. I must admit, I am one of those people. Read More »

Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year. No, it wasn’t my birthday or the night I bet my buddy that Dirk Nowitzki would go H.A.M. Rather, last night was the 27th annual NBA Draft Lottery at the NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus, N.J. (And if you know me, it takes a special occasion to willingly travel across the river.) With Commissioner David Stern in the house along with representatives from the 12 teams in the Lottery, go behind the scenes to relive the experience. Read More »

The NBA is all business – both literally and figuratively. Players are shipped around from team to team and sometimes viewed more as commodities than human beings. With that unchangeable fact, players have to be all business with their play on the court, and are forced to become heartless go-getters in order to keep their jobs.
A lot of the times emotions are rattled, forcing players and organizations to develop animosity towards one another. For example, Dan Gilbert’s slaying of LeBron James will add extra anticipation to the Cavs/Heat game on Dec. 2, and in David Lee’s return to the Garden he dropped 28 points and 10 rebounds. If there’s anyone that knows about getting even with a former employer, it’s Al Harrington. Read More »

Well, you might have been able to see this coming. First there was the letter – which Dan Gilbert has said on numerous occasions that he does not regret – and now this. When the Cavs owner was asked this week if the franchise would ever consider retiring LeBron‘s No. 23 jersey in Cleveland, he said he hasn’t discussed retiring any player’s jersey during his five years of ownership. This was a different era. It had to be. Sure, a few years back, us Cleveland sports fans knew all about Cleveland’s infamous dry spell, title-less since Jim Brown led the Browns to the AFC Championship in 1964 (not even a Super Bowl). But come on, the drought couldn’t really go on much longer…right? Yes, the Browns and Indians have been as uninspiring as of late. But, the Cavaliers had a new owner, new state-of-the-art practice facility, new colors, and most importantly, an 18-year-old that would become the best athlete, and one of the best players, to ever step on a basketball court. And, to give the story its final Hollywood touch, he was from just a few dozen miles down the road in Akron. What could be better?! It wasn’t a matter of if we were going to win a championship, but when. But, on Thursday night, in front of the millions of people, while certainly not his chief intention, LeBron James broke our hearts forever. Read More »

Let’s be honest. We all get upset. But this is just a bit over the top. After LeBron James decided to head to Miami, Cavs Majority Owner Dan Gilbert decided to write an “Open Letter to Fans.” This may go down as famous as the Desiderata. Read the letter in its entirety after the jump. Read More »

Although Danny Ferry resigned as the Cavaliers GM today, there was little chance that owner Dan Gilbert was going to offer Ferry a new deal. According to the press release, Ferry “led the team through the most successful period in franchise history.” Really? It seems more like LeBron led them through this successful period if you ask me. While Phil Jackson is still trying to figure out Phoenix’s zone defense in time for Game 5 tonight, his name is being circulated wildly in coaching rumors. The Bulls, Nets, and Cavs have all either (allegedly) reached out to Jackson or put him on their coaching wish-list. Jackson’s contract with the Lakers is up after the season, and the Lakers have made it known that they want Phil to take a paycut from his $12 million salary. With a possible paycut looming, Phil could land elsewhere this summer, and any team looking to sign LeBron needs to scoop him up. Read More »

Who didn’t see this coming? After five season in Cleveland (with no NBA titles to show for it), Danny Ferry announced today that the Cavs have relieved Mike Brown of his duties as head coach. Makes sense, considering the Cavs had a midnight deadline Sunday night to fire him or pay him his full $4.5 million salary for next season. Read More »
