WNBA Finals Preview: Phoenix Mercury Versus Chicago Sky

Phoenix Mercury

Chicago. Phoenix. The Finals.

The most talented pure scorer in the league going up against the fiercely talented and sometimes controversial frontcourt force. Two of the sport’s most marketable stars stepping onto the league’s biggest stage for ownership of the game’s most coveted prize.

No, this isn’t 1993, when Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls took on Charles Barkley’s Phoenix Suns in what turned out to be an epic NBA Finals series.

This is the 2014 WNBA Finals, which pits Elena Delle Donne and the Chicago Sky against Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury. Game 1 of the best-of-five series tips off this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. EST on ABC. But unlike ’93, when Jordan was at the height of his powers and the Bulls were working on their first three-peat, Phoenix is the runaway favorite here. Read More »

Summer Hoops: 15 WNBA-to-NBA Comparisons

Candace Parker

I’m tired of feeling like I have to begin every women’s basketball column defending the sport and explaining why I watch women’s basketball. So for that, I’ll just say this: As a man, if you don’t have any deep-seeded problems with women in general, then you shouldn’t have any problems watching, appreciating and – stick with me here – maybe even enjoying women’s basketball. WNBA’s Elena Delle Donne Hits Amazing Game-Winning Buzzer-Beater

Elena Delle Donne

After a few years out of the spotlight, Elena Delle Donne saw her basketball profile blow up at Delaware. We dropped a feature on her in the magazine and she dropped 28.1 points per game as a junior. Now as a rookie with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky, the 6-5 do-it-all forward is averaging over 18 points a game. Last night, Delle Donne added another highlight: a buzzer-beater against the Phoenix Mercury. Read More »

Brittney Griner Dunks Twice In Her WNBA Debut

Brittney Griner

We knew it wouldn’t take long for Brittney Griner to start changing the WNBA. After one game, even though her team lost by 22, she already has. The rook went for 17 points, eight boards and four blocks, and put home two dunks in her professional debut. Before this, there had only been three dunks ever in a WNBA game. Read More »

Carmelo Anthony, New York Stage An Incredible Scoring Run; The Warriors Light It Up; Metta World Peace Is Amazing

Carmelo Anthony

At the half of New York’s 87-71 Game 2 win over Boston, Charles Barkley called for Carmelo Anthony to give him more, saying New York doesn’t have enough scorers to have off nights from Anthony and still expect to win. ‘Melo had made just three buckets in the first two quarters, and New York was trailing by six. Tracy McGrady Returns for the Playoffs; Skylar Diggins Shows Off; NBA Draft Shocker

tracy mcgrady spurs

On a night where the two NBA games on the schedule featured a slew of missing starters and some ugly-ass basketball, the big news of the day came early on with word of two huge free agent signings … if we were currently living in 2005.

It started with this tweet (and a collective “Whaa?” from the Twitterverse): Read More »

J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony Pummel a Rival; The Lakers Take Another Bad Hit

j.r. smith new york knicks

That wasn’t much of compelling first round playoff preview was it? The streaking New York Knicks went into Boston and smacked the Celtics, 100-85. (and it didn’t even feel that close). New York has now won five in a row, and last night’s W pushed them into second place in the Eastern Conference (percentage points ahead of the Indiana Pacers) … The Knicks cruised to their victory basically playing 2-v-5 on offense. J.R. Smith led the way with 32 points on some sort of I-forget-how-I-usually-play trip. Smith shot 13-24 from the field and didn’t take his first three until there were five minutes left in the third quarter … Carmelo Anthony [Check him out in the new Game of Thrones Commercial] provided the other half of the Knicks’ punch, but if you’re looking for the same type of offensive efficiency that Smith brought to the table, move it along.
